4 Critical Things You Must Do to Make Your Business Stand Out Online

4 CRITICAL THINGS YOU MUST DO TO
MAKE YOUR BUSINESS STAND OUT ONLINE

Define your Niche, Increase Sales, & Attract Your Ideal Customers

Define your Niche, Increase Sales, & Attract Your Ideal Customers

Article by Angel Quintana
Photo by Carley Page Summers & Flea Market Fab

Here are the 4 CRITICAL things you can do if you want your business to stand out online (even if you think the market is saturated) that will help you define your niche, increase sales, and attract your ideal customers:

Secret 1
Determine the Urgent Problem You Solve

The first thing to consider is what Urgent Problem do you know how to solve. Whether you are a graphic designer or sell skincare, your ideal customer is on Google searching for a solution to their problem right now-- but do you know what they're searching for? Embody their pain and figure out in their own language what is keep them up at night and then go Google those words and see what articles pop-up. You'll discover what's trending when it comes to written articles, secret: take notes. The articles that show up on the first page of Google search have "Google Juice" and it's for a reason. That reason is called SEO and it has every indication of what urgent problem you solve.

Secret 2
Defining Gateway vs Root

Once you know what your ideal customer is Googling, it's time to make a list of these "gateway problems". A root problem is a generic problem such as:
    • Insomnia
    • Weight Loss
    • Acne
    • Heartbreak

In other words, a gateway problem is the problem your ideal customer "thinks they have". Let me break it down: If someone cannot sleep at night; they are tossing and turning, yet exhausted, the thing they are Googling is, "How to get a better nights sleep." But you and I both know that the real problem goes much deeper than just their inability to sleep.  The real problem could be stress at work, loss of a loved one, suppressed emotions, or sugar addiction. It’s imperative you know what their “gateway problem” is so you can get them in the door (ie: your website) with SEO (search engine optimization) and then show them that the real problem lies in the "root problem" or in other words, the holistic solution that lays the problem to rest for good-- no pun intended. Wink.

Secret 3
Create a Niche & Own It

Finding a niche is neither here nor there. How you really find your niche is to create one. The way to create a niche is to understand the root problem you solve. For example, here at Holistic Fashionista we work with holistic leaders who are making a positive difference in the world.  We understand the problem they need solved (how to use the internet to increase sales), so our niche is internet marketing, yet our niche market are holistic leaders of tomorrow. Creating a niche is actually fairly simple if you truly understand the problem you solve. Once you know this, you can get very strategic in your marketing efforts and in the development of new products/programs.

Secret 4
Develop Stellar Products/Programs

Now that you know what urgent problem you solve,  the gateway problem to bring them to your website, created a niche, and know your holistic solution (or your root problem), you’re now ready to put together your products/programs to enhance the life of your ideal customer. Putting together your products/programs can be tricky, because you’ve got a lot of skills, expertise, and qualifications— it can be tough determining how to cohesively communicate and organize your skill set into a product that solves the problem.  When developing stellar products/programs for your ideal customer keep in mind:

    • What is their gateway problem
    • What is your holistic system to getting the problem solved
    • What steps will you take them through to assure the problem doesn't return
    • How will you deliver your product/program so it's easy to access
    • How will you package your product/program to maximize revenue
    • What is your marketing system to bringing it to market

The bottom line is to forget about your competition and start focusing on what makes you different-- that's how your product will stand out too. Get your audience to trust you by delivering them rich content each week that gives solutions to the "gateway problem", but always encourage them to take the next step to solve their problem for good by purchasing your stellar product or program where the "root problem" is solved.

Whatever you decide to sell, take your time with the development process— it’s paramount to your success. If you sell something people don't want or you don't know how to speak to their pain, there will be someone else who can--so always do your research first and you're sure to get the sale.

How to Detox from a Slimy Salesman

HOW TO DETOX FROM A SLIMY SALESMAN

Written by: Angel Quintana   Photo: Halley Elefante

how-to-cope-with-salesman.jpg

Chances are, you’ve purchased a thing or two in your life and I’m sure one or more of those products or services worked like a charm, while others failed miserably.

But sometimes it’s not the product or the service that sucked, it was actually the person who sold it to you.

As business owners, selling is part of the gig, for without sales, you really don’t have a business at all. Yet, it’s rarely discussed what happens after the customer gets home. We often think about if the customer will love their new purchase or if will they come back and buy from us again. What we fail to think about all together is whether or not we were a good salesman.

The “sales gurus” might say that “if you closed the deal, you did your job”— but I’m opening that up for debate. What some salesman might not realize is we’re not all idiots. Customers aren’t just people walking around with dollar signs on their backs; they’re actually individuals with problems that needs solving. And lucky for us, they decided to give our product or service a chance. We should feel honored.

If you’ve been slimed by a slimy salesman, I can relate. If you are worried you’ve been a slimy salesman, listen up.

WHAT DETERMINES A “SLIMY SALESMAN”

A slimy salesman has an agenda; that agenda is to make a buck. Sure, you might have the most amazing product on the market that does bells and whistles around your competition, but if you push too hard to sell it, you come off as slimy. This could mean you offered too many up sells or kept promoting your products when the customer shared no interest in learning more. It could also mean you tried to show-off how much “knowledge” you had in your brain about the topic, (which is cool for all about 3 minutes), but anything longer than that, and you just sound like a show-off who is craving recognition or worse, you're a slimy salesman.

If you’ve practiced or encountered any of these situations, live and learn or better yet, detox and delete. What most slimy salesman offenders fail to see is what happens when the customer gets home. Sure, some customers will just accept the fact “that’s just a typical salesman”, but it shouldn’t be the norm. And I’m writing this article to scream that it’s gross and disgusting. Shame on you.

In today’s modern digital age, we have a plethora of options to choose from — and everyone has competition. If you run a business, you already know that repeat customers are where the money is at— so why try to sell your new customer the moon, the stars, and the sky all in the first visit? It makes the customer feel icky, like we’ve just been slimed and you just look like desperate.

Here is a quick way to detox from a slimy salesman that doesn’t involve awkward conversations and puts you back in the power position. (And if you're a slimy salesman, you'll learn a thing or two, too.)

NEVER BUY FROM THAT COMPANY AGAIN.
I know this sounds drastic, but I assure you there are other options. The internet is filled with awesome products and services that solve the same exact problem, why buy from a slimy salesman who only sees you as a walking dollar sign? You’re a human being, not just a wallet filled with credit cards and anyone who makes you feel less than so, can piss off. Do yourself a favor and delete them from your iPhone right now. (Attn: Slimy salesman, live and learn.)

CANCEL ALL FUTURE APPOINTMENTS.
Since most salesman never really learn why they can’t retain every customer, (because their slime tactics were too aggressive) we can make a small gesture to let them know “we weren’t fully satisfied” by canceling all future appointments. They won’t totally understand why you cancelled, but it will put you back in the power position and help you dry your tears from feeling downright abused!

TUNE INTO YOUR INTUITION.
Most of the time when we’re being sold to, we often forget to check-in with our intuition. Your intuition is there to save you every time you encounter a slimy salesman, so be sure to ask yourself WHY the salesman is giving you something for FREE or giving you a discount on your first oil change. Is it because they plan to up sell you 5 more times during the transaction or do they really want your lifetime business? The only way to find out is to ask. You can usually decide from there if you’ll want to show up for the free service or if if it will cost you 5 times that without your noticing... at first. Use your intuition.

I’m not one for leaving nasty reviews on Yelp or Amazon, because it lowers your vibration and makes your sound like a victim, which is still giving the salesman power over you. When you take the high road and find other businesses who offer comparable products and services, that is the best revenge. The slimy salesman loses your repeat business and you feel more in control of your life and your bank account! Finally!

After all, every thing in life is energy, including sales tactics. If you come off as a desperate, know-it-all salesman who thinks he/she’s clever because you’ve memorized a few facts to make you sound smart during your sales pitch, you can expect a few cancelled appointments.

The best way to gain new business and win back repeat customers is to be upfront about everything. If you’re giving something away for free, tell your prospects why you’re doing so— and be transparent:

  • I want you to think I’m awesome
  • I want you to love my product so much, you tell your friends
  • I want to win your trust
  • I want to sell you other products that will make you a raving fan

Don’t try to sell everything under the sun, even if you think we need it. I assure you, we’ll try it at some point if you take your time and get to know their life and needs. Stop being so promiscuous; we get that enough in our dating life— we don’t need it anywhere else!

If you’ve been slimed my heart goes out to you. Maybe you’ve shed a couple tears or felt like leaving a nasty review, but just know there are better remedies (and revenges) you can proceed with that will leave you feeling empowered, not slimed and never victimized. Triple win.

What to Know Before You Hire Your Next Coach

STOP HIRING THE WRONG CONSULTANTS!
{What to Know Before You Hire Your Next Coach}

What to Know Before You Hire Your Next Coach

What to Know Before You Hire Your Next Coach

Article by Toya Styles
Magazine: Issue #16

I know what the title has you thinking; “But Isn’t Toya a consultant?” Yes, yes I am. But this article is about choosing the right consultant for your business. Now I believe that every entrepreneur should have a coach.

Personally, I have hired three different consultants for my business. One thing I learned quickly with my first consultant was setting expectations. Looking back, I would have had a much better experience if I had known what I wanted out of their services and what I expected to gain. A business coach is just going to tell you what they personally know about the game. For instance your coach may be the foremost authority in the world of Facebook, but if your clientele isn't on Facebook then what’s the point? You just wasted a ton of money and it is no one’s fault but your own.

Are you looking for business development? Are you looking to learn a new skill? Do you want to grow your small business? These are the questions you need to ask yourself because your answers will lead you to different types of consultants, one of which will be the right one for you.

Be careful not to get caught up in the excitement of a certain coach if you are not ready. Good coaches are successful, energetic and they are encouragers! You can easily be swayed by that alone. For example, during my rebranding process I “cyber stalked” 4 different business coaches. This time, I needed business development, so that is what I was focused on. I finally settled on a business coach that was perfect for me and where I was in my process.  But there was another coach that I seriously considered hiring and realized I wasn’t ready for her. She focuses on increasing and building upon what you already have but, at the time, I needed more foundational help. I was transitioning from fashion styling full time to helping CEOs who need help with networking skills and social media strategy (which I didn’t know at the time).  If I had hired her I would not have the incredible business I have now that is laser focused in on what I love and have been doing, unknowingly, for years!

I am a firm believer that you should invest not only in yourself but in your business growth. If you are not investing in yourself then how are you expecting to grow? (Did I mention it’s tax deductible?)

So, I leave you with this thought. Take the time to know what YOU need as a business owner for your business. Don’t just jump on the next coaching bandwagon, do what makes sense for your business.

4 Lessons Learned About Coaching

4 LESSONS LEARNED ABOUT COACHING
{FROM THE VOICE}

Lessons Learned About Coaching

Lessons Learned About Coaching

Article by Lynne Dominick
Magazine: Issue #39

I admit I am a little obsessed with NBC’s The Voice.

Season after season, I’m amazed at the incredible pool of talent that they are able to amass. From pre-school teachers, to medical students, to child stars fallen and redeemed. These are fierce, determined competitors pursuing their ultimate dream.

I also applaud their coaches, and value what I’ve learned from them as it relates to my coaching practice. Here are four valuable lessons about coaching that I’ve been able to take away as a regular viewer:

1. Identify the secret sauce…

Or, as Blake Shelton would say, “Man, I didn’t realize you had that great vibrato!"

Each and every one of us has our own secret sauce; that special something that allows us to shine. As coaches, it is essential that we spend enough time helping uncover the special something in each one of our clients. We have to lead them in the self-discovery process and uncover the talent, driving force and unique purpose that can allow them to achieve success on their terms.

2. Failure is a nebulous term…

Or, as Adam Levine would say, “I loved that your voice cracked when you hit that high note, it shows you're human, man.”

We all fail. Living in fear is far worse than failing. Put your client at ease by sharing your failures and allow them to see your vulnerable side. By owning it you are able to remind him or her that lessons are not learned by success alone, and that failure presents an opportunity to get it right the next time. It’s great to be human.

3. Sometimes all someone needs is a helping hand…

Or, as Christina Aguilera would say, “I’m here for you."

Any process can be made easier when you allow someone to accompany you on the journey. As a coach you can help lift the psychological burden of going it alone. Let your client know that they can reach out to you with questions and you’ll be there to guide them to the answer.

4. Confidence is everything…

Or, as Pharrell Williams would say, “Dude, I have watched you go through this process, and man, you are incredible; you got this."

At the end of the day, our clients need to believe. Believe in their idea, believe in their skill, and believe in their ability to go the distance. By instilling confidence, a coach paves the way for his or her client to experience the success they seek.

Being Overly Flexible is for Yoga, Not for Business

Being Overly Flexible is for Yoga, Not for Business

Being Overly Flexible is for Yoga, Not for Business

BEING OVERLY FLEXIBLE IS FOR YOGA, NOT FOR BUSINESS

Article by John Scardina
Magazine: Issue #38

Being flexible in business is such a great attribute, we need flexibility in order adapt and solve problems for our business. We as entrepreneurs do everything we can to become and maintain a successful business, sometimes even bending over backwards to please a customer or client. At so many levels this is acceptable in order to survive. Other times this can be a trying event.

As a Reiki Master/Teacher I have always managed my practice to cater to all and any client willing to come my way. It was in these efforts I realized that I was practicing what I like call “Business Yoga”. I found myself bending and contorting to every need in order to reach and teach students. I would do everything I could possible do in order to secure a client up to and including changing class dates, fee structures, and letting clients dictate what was once a business plan of my own making. I was allowing all clients to run their plan, not mine.

Again I will say that being flexible is a fine quality, but to what extent do go to? We all have those clients that will dictate their availability even after scheduling, and those in addition who are consistently late for appointments. Even those who just need an extra everything to please them. These are the types of clients that greatly reduce your ability to run your business as efficiently as it should run.  In place of running your business you are actually performing a yoga routine. Being in tune with and preventing these events can make your business run with greater reward and general well being.

Knowing when to say no is the key to stop being overly flexible. We all are solving a problem and providing a service, it’s of the upmost importance that we remain clear with all clients of what our expectations are. Our time and sanity it just as important as the services we provide. We can provide a great service to all clients without giving into “Business Yoga”, let’s save that for our down and meditative time in a studio rebalancing and relaxing. Your real clients will get it.

1| Project your expectations to every client, potential and current.
2| Know when to say no
3| Do not accept schedule changes repeatedly
4| Take charge of what is your schedule
5| Know when to let go of clients that consume excess time
6| Do not be overly flexible!
