5 Ways to Fund Your Start-Up Business

5 WAYS TO FUND YOUR START-UP BUSINESS

5 Ways to Fund Your Start-Up Business

5 Ways to Fund Your Start-Up Business

Article By: Lynne Dominick and Heather Jadus

Incredible as it may seem, before 1972, a woman in the United States looking to purchase a home needed a cosigner to take out a mortgage, even if she met all of the financial qualifications on her own.

In 2016, women will not only continue to wield significant individual purchasing power, they will be responsible for 43% of all small business start-ups, rising to an estimated 50% by the year 2020.

Adequate capital behind any new business is absolutely essential for its success.  Here are some of the most commonly used methods of securing revenue.

Bootstrapping

One of the motivating factors in having your own business is the independence that comes with it.  As a result, your goal should be to retain as much of the controlling interest in your business as possible.

Lines of credit along with business credit cards can provide great leverage and help you to get things off the ground.  American Express, Chase, Citi and Capital One offer bankcards that have no annual fees and low interest rate options specifically for new businesses owners.

Friends & Family

Asking friends and family to help get you through the initial launch stages is also a widely accepted way of funding your start-up while maintaining complete ownership.

Angel Investors

An angel investor is someone who provides capital for a business start-up.  Most of the time, an angel investor will provide a loan or ask for shares in the company depending on both the financial and time obligations required.

If you end up seeking revenue by this method you will need to have a business plan that lays out a vision for your business that includes specific costs and anticipated revenue for at least 18-36 months.

Recently, we have seen the growth of angel investor groups such as 37 Angels, http://www.37angels.com/#focus, a network of investors that has been created to specifically fund start-ups by women.  These networks are a great source of potential revenue, but will most likely require you to give up a sizable percentage of the company.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is one of the fastest growing segments of revenue sourcing for new businesses throughout the world, allowing businesses to obtain small amounts of revenue from a huge network of people.  It is estimated that Crowdfunding will skyrocket to a trillion dollar industry by 2020.

Participants can chose from equity as well as non-equity based crowdfunding platforms depending on what product or service they are looking to fund.

Product based crowdfunding allows visitors to purchase a product at a special rate in return for their monetary support.  Kickstarter, Indiegogo
and GoFundMe are among the most popular crowdfunding sites.
https://www.kickstarter.com/, https://www.indiegogo.com/#/picks_for_you
https://www.gofundme.com/

Equity based platforms work similarly to that Angel Investing, requiring that an owner turn over a percentage of the company in return for monetary investment.

Crowdfunding 2.0

There is an exciting brand new crowdfunding platform called Smash Fund that is rewriting the rules by using a Share Economy business model similar to the one used by Uber.

By marrying a premium social network with a crowdfunding platform, Smash Fund is able to provide network partners with 80% of the collected membership revenues in addition to any revenues collected through direct crowdfunding.

Smash Fund is also eliminating the conditions and fees associated with traditional crowdfunding platforms as further incentive.  To learn more: http://smashfundgal.smashfunder90.com/

No matter how you elect to raise money for your business, you need to investigate all of the options open to you and select the one that best matches the needs of your start-up.

Preparedness is fundamental to success.

TRAVEL GUIDE: PLANNING
A TRIP TO LONDON

Time to Pack Your Bags!

Ever the optimist, the morning after the Brexit vote I woke up trying to put a positive spin on the market-shattering news of the “Leave” vote majority.  The obvious choice (and one I am sure that is shared by many of you) was, “I need to start planning a trip to London”!

Let’s look at the top reasons why this silver lining solution is a really good idea.

Special Offers
Many of the airlines are offering great travel packages for the summer, but as the pound will probably not have an immediate recovery, why not take advantage of the situation and take that trip across the pond after the tourists have gone home.

September is a beautiful month, the weather is still warm and many of the airline deals are still valid.  There are also very reasonable last minute airline options that will not set you back an arm and a leg.  If you do decide to take advantage of a last minute opportunity, be sure to check out:

Cheap Fare Guru
Cheap Fares
One Deal
Booking Buddy

Great Accommodations
You are never without hotel options in London.  There are many great large, small and boutique hotels in practically every neighborhood.  I recommend the Tablet Hotels site to familiarize yourself with availability, price and services.

If you can manage without the convenience of a restaurant on site or calling room service, there are some very good hotel alternatives that allow you to avoid paying the premium:

Airbnb
The global popularity of Airbnb has provided a vast array of home away from home options for travelers and London is no exception.  You can find many in town availabilities for under $150. a night.

Alastair Sawdays
Sawdays has a great array of interesting Bed and Breakfasts in London and throughout the UK and Europe at reasonable prices.

If you feel that the plunging pound has given you the opportunity to splurge, by all means check out the accommodations being offered on One Fine Stay. Normally, you can find spacious apartments that are great for couples, a small family or a girls getaway weekend. They are currently offering a 20% off special rate through September.

Fab Food
London used to be the last place on earth people would want to travel to for good food, but that has definitely changed. The restaurant scene in London is definitely front and center on the global food stage.

Check out the 40 hottest new restaurants and remember to book a reservation!

Sights, Venues and Getting Around
Time Out London enables you to check out upcoming venues and events with one click.  Find out if there is something of special interest on the horizon that will allow you to fine-tune your travel dates.

Visit London is another ideal site to find out everything that you need to know about the in-town goings on. This site will also give you a great overview of how to get around the sometimes complicated and always sprawling London landscape.

If you want to be spoiled, Uber fully services the London area, however there are plenty of lower cost options to get around the city including the very fast train from Heathrow to Paddington Station that allows you to avoid traffic and be in the heart of the city in less an twenty minutes.  Once there you can take the Underground, opt for a taxi or request an Uber to take you the rest of the way.

Plugging In
One of the most expensive, yet indispensible aspects of traveling abroad is cell phone usage.  It is important to know how to avoid paying exorbitant fees.

Money Saving Expert is a comprehensive website that has recently been updated to reflect the most currently accurate information on this subject.

Odds & Ends
If you have some time before your trip you might apply for a TSA Pre Check.  It can save you the hassle of spending hour is in airport security lines.

Now check to see if that Passport is still valid and member take lots of pictures and share them with the Holistic Fashionista tribe. Cheers!

4 Lessons Learned About Coaching

4 LESSONS LEARNED ABOUT COACHING
{FROM THE VOICE}

Lessons Learned About Coaching

Lessons Learned About Coaching

Article by Lynne Dominick
Magazine: Issue #39

I admit I am a little obsessed with NBC’s The Voice.

Season after season, I’m amazed at the incredible pool of talent that they are able to amass. From pre-school teachers, to medical students, to child stars fallen and redeemed. These are fierce, determined competitors pursuing their ultimate dream.

I also applaud their coaches, and value what I’ve learned from them as it relates to my coaching practice. Here are four valuable lessons about coaching that I’ve been able to take away as a regular viewer:

1. Identify the secret sauce…

Or, as Blake Shelton would say, “Man, I didn’t realize you had that great vibrato!"

Each and every one of us has our own secret sauce; that special something that allows us to shine. As coaches, it is essential that we spend enough time helping uncover the special something in each one of our clients. We have to lead them in the self-discovery process and uncover the talent, driving force and unique purpose that can allow them to achieve success on their terms.

2. Failure is a nebulous term…

Or, as Adam Levine would say, “I loved that your voice cracked when you hit that high note, it shows you're human, man.”

We all fail. Living in fear is far worse than failing. Put your client at ease by sharing your failures and allow them to see your vulnerable side. By owning it you are able to remind him or her that lessons are not learned by success alone, and that failure presents an opportunity to get it right the next time. It’s great to be human.

3. Sometimes all someone needs is a helping hand…

Or, as Christina Aguilera would say, “I’m here for you."

Any process can be made easier when you allow someone to accompany you on the journey. As a coach you can help lift the psychological burden of going it alone. Let your client know that they can reach out to you with questions and you’ll be there to guide them to the answer.

4. Confidence is everything…

Or, as Pharrell Williams would say, “Dude, I have watched you go through this process, and man, you are incredible; you got this."

At the end of the day, our clients need to believe. Believe in their idea, believe in their skill, and believe in their ability to go the distance. By instilling confidence, a coach paves the way for his or her client to experience the success they seek.

Tres Branifique! Building a Brand Heritage

TRES BRANIFIQUE! BUILDING A BRAND HERITAGE

Tres Branifique! Building a Brand Heritage

Tres Branifique! Building a Brand Heritage

Branding has almost become colloquial these days, yet I bet that when you think about branding, the first thing that comes to mind is some type of product or business. Yet when it comes to branding, the scope extends far beyond products or services. Just about anything can be a brand these days. Let’s take cities for instance, and, for the sake of this article, let’s take Paris!

Steeped in a history rich with art and design, The Paris Brand has been developing for centuries. Its gorgeous architecture, pristine parks, extraordinary cuisine, and exquisite fashion all contribute to a global brand image of one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

Even before stepping foot in Paris, years of browsing through fashion magazines and watching old movies helped me conjure up images of romance, beauty, and sensual delights.

Fall is an incredibly wonderful time to visit Paris.  Here are some reasons why the brand heritage is alive and well:

Savor the Experience
For my husband, Paris is all about its history; the crypts of the Cluny Museum, the underground maize and macabre past of the city’s sewers, the audacity of Napoleon; endless hours spent in L’Ecole de Militaire and Musee D’L’Armee.

For me, Paris is taking a walk in the Jardin du Luxembourg, eating a croissant on the I’sle St       Louis a Sunday morning, having afternoon tea at Marriage Freres, enjoying a chocolate chaud at Angelina, or riding the number 6 metro line just to get that first glimpse of the Eiffel Tower as the train speeds along, running outside, as it nears the Bir-Hakim stop.

Before You Go
I often find the planning stages of a trip almost as fun as the trip itself.  Maybe it is because I immerse myself in the process.  This includes reading books that take place in the country I am about to visit, watching movies that were filmed in that city and creating a playlist of related tunes on my iPhone.

Here are some recommendations to enhance the planning portion of your trip to Paris:

Once You Arrive
I recommend that you start your site seeing or exploring immediately. DO NOT TAKE A NAP. Seriously, this is Paris!
One of the best ways to see Paris than is on foot.  Here are USA Today’s best walking tour recommendations:

Self-Guided|
Those with an independent streak and no patience for groups can run their own walking tours with directions that are either printed on paper or downloaded to an MP3 player. An example of the former are the free tours offered by Paris Walking Tours. Depending on what you choose, you can visit such favorites as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Tromphe and the Champs-Elysees. The tours are quite basic, explaining directions and the names of what you are seeing but giving no historical background. Travel guru Rick Steves adds humor and explanations to his free MP3 audio tours, which include a historic Paris walk and specific tours for the Louvre and Musee D’Orsay.

Free|
If you prefer being guided by a human being but don't have a lot of money, then free guided walking tours are for you. These trips are characterized by enthusiastic, native Parisian volunteers and very large crowds who come and go throughout the narration. One example is Discover Walks, whose walks take you to several Paris landmarks, specific areas such as the Latin Quarter or to specific sights like Notre Dame. Walks typically occur two or three times a day, rain or shine, and require no reservations. Simply show up at the appointed place and time, and look for the pink outfits. Being volunteers, the guides appreciate tips at the end of the walk, though they are not required.

Commercial|
Companies that run commercial walking tours may offer smaller groups, greater selection, gift certificates and souvenirs. Reservations may be required, though some also allow you to just show up. As an example, Classic Walks covers such broad topics as Classic Paris, the French Revolution and World War II, or more specific areas such as Montmartre. If you want the intimacy of a walking tour, with the speed of a vehicle, the company also offers tours on Segways and bicycles. These types of trip cover more ground and enable you to reach widely spaced sights in shorter times.

Private|
Private tours cost the most money but allow you to focus on only the topics that interest you. You can take pre-planned itineraries, but take detours and skip sights you find boring. Or you can have the guide plan an excursion for you from scratch. Advanced reservations are necessary. An example is Context Paris Tours, which is endorsed by such travel luminaries as Fodor's, Frommer's, National Geographic and Insight Guides. They call their guides docents because they have advanced degrees in such subjects as art history, cuisine or archaeology, and feature a large educational component in their tours. Their planned itineraries are divided into themes like architecture or gastronomy and offer unusual views such as the belly of Paris and Modernist buildings.

Taking the Metro or the Bateaubus in season are other great ways to take in the city.

What to See
You can spend weeks, months even years getting to know The City of Light, but if your time is limited, you can still get a great feeling for this very special place in a short period of time. Here is your highlight list.  If you are a museum person, browse the list for the ones that best suit your taste, if your someone who prefers being outside and mingling with the locals, focus on the site list and the neighborhood list.
