How to Go Green, One Sheet at a Time

HOW TO GO GREEN, ONE SHEET AT A TIME

Going Green One Sheet at a Time

Going Green One Sheet at a Time

According to The Energy Co-op, the average American uses approximately 45 pounds of them per year. Yes, it’s true, and even in an age when everyone says they want to live a more Earth-conscious, ‘green’ life. How ‘bout we start by thinking about using fewer paper towels, people

Check out this ‘green,’ albeit old-fashioned alternative to paper towels: cloth.

1| Stop setting a roll of paper towels on the dinner table. Instead use vintage napkins that you keep in a basket on the table. Personalize the collection by seeking design styles that speak to you. Chicken images. Shabby chic embroidery. Days of the week. 60s mod. When the supper dishes get picked up, the napkins go into a soak bucket then get run in the next wash. [Soak bucket / sōk buck•et / noun / a bucket filled with sudsy detergent, bleach and water. Otherwise known as Ask Your Grandmother.]

2| Dishtowels. Now here’s where older can be better. Cotton or linen, vintage dishtowels are fabulously absorbent and soft, and generally lint-free. Calendar, travel themes, novelty prints… Quite a many are adorable too.

3| Instead of cleaning up spills and messes with several winds of paper towel, use a vintage towel. Terrycloth is super absorbent and comes in various sizes. Can’t say that about a paper towel. Keep ‘em on hand for when pups track in mud or kids drop juice boxes. Tip? Don’t just use some old towels but fun, colorful ones you pick up at estate sales. Just because they’re for “mop wiping” doesn’t mean they can’t be a cheery hot pink or groovy damask pattern.

4| As the cloth items get thin and worn they can then be used for other household projects (i.e. painting or washing the car) instead of the paper towels.

But aren’t vintage linens hard to clean? Nope. Got a bucket or laundry sink, water, Oxy and/or Shout, and a washer/drier handy, it’s EASY. Treat any stains and toss items in the soak bucket for the next wash load.  For specific types of stains there are many ‘how to’ tutorials on the interwebs.

Doesn’t this create extra laundry and, in the process, more gas, electricity, and water consumed? Not really once the habits are in place. It will create conscious thought about one’s paper towel habit and, in the process, some new and ‘greener’ ones.

How hygienic are vintage linens, really? Quite. Hot water wash cycle and they’re sanitized, clean and ready to be used again.

What about bacon? Ah, yes, and what about BACON? Whether swine or vegan rice bacon, there’s gonna be grease, and you know what? There’s no better way to sop up and soak grease than with a good old-fashioned paper towel. Use paper towels as needed, of course. Just as needed.

How to start this ‘new’ vintage linens consciousness…

1 :: Bring out Aunt May’s linen napkins or the tea towels your mother inherited from her mother. They were meant to be used and loved.  Pick up pretty linens at yard or estate sales, eBay or Etsy.  Remember that vintage doesn’t have to be dowdy.  Look at vintage Vera table linens, for example - as fresh today as they were in the 1960s.

2 :: Keep linens in handy, easy to reach places.  Basket of napkins on the table.  Mop towels in a drawer by the back door or hand towels in the glove box.

3 :: Stop keeping the paper towel roll in the most convenient places, i.e. on top of the counter near the sink. Force the household into new habits, drawers or glove box.

In time - one square at a time - you’re keeping some of that 45 pounds of paper towel from hitting the landfills.

Use it up.  Wear it out.  Make it do, or do without.

5 Ways to Fund Your Start-Up Business

5 WAYS TO FUND YOUR START-UP BUSINESS

5 Ways to Fund Your Start-Up Business

5 Ways to Fund Your Start-Up Business

Article By: Lynne Dominick and Heather Jadus

Incredible as it may seem, before 1972, a woman in the United States looking to purchase a home needed a cosigner to take out a mortgage, even if she met all of the financial qualifications on her own.

In 2016, women will not only continue to wield significant individual purchasing power, they will be responsible for 43% of all small business start-ups, rising to an estimated 50% by the year 2020.

Adequate capital behind any new business is absolutely essential for its success.  Here are some of the most commonly used methods of securing revenue.

Bootstrapping

One of the motivating factors in having your own business is the independence that comes with it.  As a result, your goal should be to retain as much of the controlling interest in your business as possible.

Lines of credit along with business credit cards can provide great leverage and help you to get things off the ground.  American Express, Chase, Citi and Capital One offer bankcards that have no annual fees and low interest rate options specifically for new businesses owners.

Friends & Family

Asking friends and family to help get you through the initial launch stages is also a widely accepted way of funding your start-up while maintaining complete ownership.

Angel Investors

An angel investor is someone who provides capital for a business start-up.  Most of the time, an angel investor will provide a loan or ask for shares in the company depending on both the financial and time obligations required.

If you end up seeking revenue by this method you will need to have a business plan that lays out a vision for your business that includes specific costs and anticipated revenue for at least 18-36 months.

Recently, we have seen the growth of angel investor groups such as 37 Angels, http://www.37angels.com/#focus, a network of investors that has been created to specifically fund start-ups by women.  These networks are a great source of potential revenue, but will most likely require you to give up a sizable percentage of the company.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is one of the fastest growing segments of revenue sourcing for new businesses throughout the world, allowing businesses to obtain small amounts of revenue from a huge network of people.  It is estimated that Crowdfunding will skyrocket to a trillion dollar industry by 2020.

Participants can chose from equity as well as non-equity based crowdfunding platforms depending on what product or service they are looking to fund.

Product based crowdfunding allows visitors to purchase a product at a special rate in return for their monetary support.  Kickstarter, Indiegogo
and GoFundMe are among the most popular crowdfunding sites.
https://www.kickstarter.com/, https://www.indiegogo.com/#/picks_for_you
https://www.gofundme.com/

Equity based platforms work similarly to that Angel Investing, requiring that an owner turn over a percentage of the company in return for monetary investment.

Crowdfunding 2.0

There is an exciting brand new crowdfunding platform called Smash Fund that is rewriting the rules by using a Share Economy business model similar to the one used by Uber.

By marrying a premium social network with a crowdfunding platform, Smash Fund is able to provide network partners with 80% of the collected membership revenues in addition to any revenues collected through direct crowdfunding.

Smash Fund is also eliminating the conditions and fees associated with traditional crowdfunding platforms as further incentive.  To learn more: http://smashfundgal.smashfunder90.com/

No matter how you elect to raise money for your business, you need to investigate all of the options open to you and select the one that best matches the needs of your start-up.

Preparedness is fundamental to success.

How to Practice More Self-Love (Part 1)

How to Practice More Self-Love (Part 1)

How to Practice More Self-Love (Part 1)

HOW TO PRACTICE MORE SELF-LOVE (Part 1)

Written By: Tracy Elizabeth Roman

You can't help but notice that self-love is trending. Everyone wants to know if it is the culprit behind their problems, what the heck is self-love anyway and why should they care.

Loving or valuing ourselves is a delineator between those who have happy, meaningful lives and those that don't. Lack of self-love plays out in every area of our lives. It determines whether we get the job, promotion or raise. Whether we get to date the guy we really want or *Mr. Eh, he'll do for now.* Whether we're jazzed when we wake up in the mornings or we hit snooze 7x before reluctantly crawling out of bed. Most importantly, it determines whether we give ourselves the same care and compassion that we would give to someone we love dearly.

In short, not loving ourselves sends a message out into the Universe that we are not deserving of everything we want for ourselves, and that's a difficult realization to accept.

What can we do to start bringing in all that we desire to turn our lackluster life into one that lights us up like a 4th of July celebration? First, you must recognize that Tinkerbell is not going to wave a magic wand over your life and materialize all of your dreams in an instant. Action is a required component of this equation and there's no getting around that. Your soul incarnated as you to experience life, and that experience comes from doing, not sitting around wishing and hoping.

Below, I share a few nuggets of wisdom to help you start creating the life of your dreams:

Self-Love Nugget # 1
What are you avoiding? Self-love begins with self-knowledge. What emotions have you been unwilling to feel? What situations are you ignoring instead of dealing with them? This is key. Because you are creating your life from the level of consciousness (or awareness) that these suppressed emotions resonate at. My suggestion: get a massage. I find that when I go to the spa and have a restorative massage, I am more willing to look deeply within myself at the areas of my life I have been avoiding. Massage relaxes your muscles and your mind and allows your soul to reveal things to you that you would otherwise never know. Bring a journal with your and after your massage, sit in the spa's relaxation room and pour it out on paper.

Self-Love Nugget # 2
Daily rituals are not an indulgence; they are a requirement. We are bombarded by information at an alarming rate. You must find time, daily and preferably first thing in the morning, to spend time alone with your soul. Our soul speaks to us in the quiet moments, when the din of our thoughts is lowered. Try out different methodologies to see what works best for you: chanting, meditation, journaling, tapping, candle gazing, prayer, the list is endless. Find what suits you and then do it. Every day.

Self-Love Nugget # 3
Pay attention to what you are thinking. We habitually think the same self-defeating thoughts day in and day out. Become an observer. If you are reactive and negative, stop, inhale deeply, exhale and relax your shoulders. Then ask within: what am I thinking to cause this reaction? Allow the thoughts to flit across the blank canvas of your mind and observe them with curiosity rather than judgment, and a sincere desire to know yourself better. This is when awareness, aha's and self-understanding show up.

More Self-Love Nuggets await in Part 2 of How to Practice More Self-Love?

The Magic of Prebiotics and Probiotics

THE MAGIC OF PREBIOTICS AND PROBIOTICS

Article by Jacqueline Rizk

Magazine: Issue #42

What’s the big deal about bacteria?

Everywhere we look, every time we consult Dr. Google we get the information that probiotics are the cornerstone to health and wellness. Remember, probiotics are the “good” bacteria.

In fact, there are thousands of probiotics on the market today. Couple that with the advice that everything you eat and drink be fermented; from kombucha to kimchi, these days it’s all about the bacteria.

Although I don’t always agree with the injudicious use of probiotics (some strains can actually cause imbalances in the body) there is something everyone can and should do incorporate into their diet to harness the power of food as medicine. Prebiotics can have a profound effect on the health of the gut and even the immune system

Probiotics may get all the press, prebiotics are the digestive darlings with their soluble fiber that, among other things, feed the good bacteria in your gut and while those good bacteria are feasting on probiotics the byproducts called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) which inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. In fact, there is a lot of research being done on SCFAs which is showing promising results in colon cancer prevention, relief from chronic constipation and even inducing remission in those with inflammatory bowel diseases such as Chron’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

So What’s a Prebiotic?

Prebiotic foods are everywhere. Bananas, chicory root, Jerusalem and regular artichokes, raw greens, leeks, raw onions, raw garlic, tiger nuts, psyllium husks, konjac root, carob and oat bran are great examples of prebiotic foods.

A few of these prebiotic foods have several other benefits that are great for the waistline, too. Psyllium husks, konjac root and oat bran, for example, absorb water and swells in your digestive tract which aids in the feeling of satiety and fullness. This can help in slower gastric emptying which helps stabilize blood sugar. This also leads to increased leptin sensitivity thus helping you shed any excess pounds.

Bonus Points for Oat Bran.

Even though I am not big on most grains, oat bran has a special place in my heart as a prebiotic food. This unsung ‘superfood’ increases mucous production in the small intestine, which, in turn gives bile acids and digestive enzyme a greater chance of breaking down the foods you eat and delays transit time through the digestive tract giving your body the best chance of absorbing the nutrients of what you eat!

Oat bran is also beta-glucan rich which is important because, as the systems of the body don’t exist in a vacuum, there are always intersections between systems. Oat bran being a prebiotic and beta-glucan rich is where gut health and immunity meet.

To make a long story short, beta-glucans have the unique ability to activate and modulate your immune system.

In short, giving oat bran a place at your breakfast table will boost both the health of your gut and your immune system and, before reaching for a probiotic pill, think about what you might have in your refrigerator right now that can feed the good bacteria that already exists in your gut!

Be Holistic, But Please Don’t Be an A$$hole

BE HOLISTIC
BUT PLEASE DON'T BE AN A$$HOLE

Be Holistic, But Please Don’t Be an Asshole

Be Holistic, But Please Don’t Be an Asshole

Article by Kathleen Macken

Magazine: Issue #41

It’s been a gripe of mine since I began this holistic way of living, so forgive me if my post comes off as a bit of a rant. The heavy hand of judgement by all the crunchy Judy McJudgeypants is well deserving of a throat punch. Remember my lovely holistic goddesses, we are all humans and therefore imperfect, we all make mistakes, or look for the easy way out, every once in a while. And that’s okay! I’m not going to judge you, if you happen to get yourself a hamburger that isn’t from organic, grass fed, pasture raised, beef. As long as you don’t judge me for being afraid to try the diva cup. Deal?

So here it goes, 5 asshole-y things I have seen and heard of, with in the holistic community.

1| Calling people “Sheeple” and telling them to, “Wake Up!” Nothing gets my panties in a wad more than these two phrases. Please, call me a degrading portmanteau and call me out for being in a social slumber…I totally see your point now (insert sarcasm and eye roll).

2| All you crunchy mamas out there. I love you all, I do, except when you show a graphic c-section photo on Facebook, followed by an infant mortality rate statistic, followed by some other political statistic claiming that big pharma is behind deaths of babies and deaths of mamas, and deaths of vaginas, etc. Ugh. Stop trying to shame women, who ironically share MANY of the same values as you do, but circumstances being what they were, did not have their child blossom from their vagina into a pool of lavender scented rose pedals surrounded by delicate lace and silk, or some shit like that. However you had your baby, wether it was rose pedals, c-section, epidural, adoption, in a hospital, in a home, the fact remains that you sustained a life within your body and you should be really fucking proud of that. If you are a home birth advocate, then educate and promote the amazing benefits of home or natural child birth. When you approach with love, you will find more people willing to receive your message. Spitting out scare tactics and shaming fellow women for something they felt was out of their control at the time, only makes you look like the asshole.

3| Scare tactics and statistics. With information so readily available, literally at the touch of a finger, scrolling through FaceTubes, InstaTwit, YouBooks we come across articles, videos, and op-ed pieces that spout statistics trying to scare you into believing one way or another. We can easily believe something that might be true, because we want so badly to believe that it is true, so we are sometimes willing to overlook validity. Please check where the statistic came from, who formulated it, what their agenda is, and who funded it, before you post it! Question the fuck out of everything, until you have exhausted any doubt. You may find that the statistic you wanted so badly to be true, actually isn’t. In which case, own that you were wrong and move on. Unless it’s a statistic that says, if you don’t have a glass of wine at the end of everyday, there is a 50% chance your head will pop off your shoulders and roll away, then that’s a risk I’m not willing to take.

4| Gluten free. I totally understand if you have a physical intolerance to gluten. I know that for some, it is truly a curse on their health to consume gluten. But when you tell me that you are gluten free but can’t tell me what gluten is, except to say, (please read the next quote in the best valley girl accent you can muster, while twirling your hair), “It makes me fat.” Or my favorite is when someone says, “I’m gluten free” while drinking a beer. Bitch please.

5| Stop getting your facts from internet memes and info graphs. And while you’re at it, stop saying, “Do your research people!” This shit lights my gut up like chile con carne. I believe it was Abraham Lincoln that said, “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.”  Or was it Mark Twain? There is credible research and peer reviewed papers and text books that back up what we believe and know to be true, wether it’s skin care, the environment, healthcare, food, etc. There is actual data that has been scientifically tested to prove our point.  So…Do your research, but don’t take the easy way out and don’t believe anything Abraham Lincoln says about the internet, you’re an asshole if you do. Okey dokey organic artichokey?

Look, we live under the same holistic umbrella because we seek alternatives to the status quo. We love to feel good, we are slightly rebellious, and a part of us really loves to give the metaphorical finger to gigantic corporations that promote illness instead of wellness. We are conscientious consumers and strive to make mindful choices that leave the smallest footprint possible. But how can our message be heard if it is through a veil of anger and confrontation?

The caveat to that question is of course the difference between yelling in anger and or proclaiming in love. Which do you think is going to be noise and which do you think will actually be heard? We are all susceptible to being the asshole, believe me, I wouldn’t be able to write a silly little article about being a holistic asshole, if I wasn’t kinda one myself. But it’s love my friends, if you show up in your space with love, you leave others more willing to receive your message. So to all you assholes out there, I love you, and I want to hear what you have to say, please stop yelling at me though, it’s fucking annoying.

With much love and affection ~ Kat
