Surviving as an Entrepreneur: It Takes a Village

SURVIVING AS AN ENTREPRENEUR:

It Takes A Village

It Takes A Village

I was thinking the other day about how my life has unfolded over the recent years and all events that have brought me to where I am now as an entrepreneur. Every choice I’ve made has happened right or wrong for a single purpose in order to bring me here today. I did manifest and meditate along the way visualizing where I wanted to be, and my vision has become extremely close to my current reality. But I wondered ever so deeply, “why am I here now?” When I tell people about what I do in business, certainly if they are not from the same holistic realm they look a bit bewildered. “I’m a healer, an educator, and a believer in spiritual health.” I receive so many questions of what it is that I actually do from those who not found a path yet, or those who belong to another village. So I answer as many questions as I can in order to inform people of all possibilities if only they choose a path, their own path.

It even gets a bit stranger for me when I tell them that I often write for an amazing women’s entrepreneurial magazine. This one sentence statement gets me looks that are so entertaining. I often wonder myself why I’m here doing this right now at this point and realized it’s what I have always manifested, “Being a respected part of a village.”

It does take this village for all of us to succeed in business, those who are like minded, searching for answers and dedicated to helping others succeed. Without the help of this village we are just solitary entrepreneurs struggling along a lonesome path just surviving in business without the help of others. This is a path I first followed when I knew everything or at least thought I did. This proved to be just an existence that was just simple and rarely profitable. The rarely profitable part was something that I have never manifested at any level, but the solitary path nurtured a lack of profitability for a long time before I came to realize that it does really take a village. I needed to become part of this village and by doing my homework I educated myself on networking skills and learned about the village and introduced myself. Learning and sharing with this village has allowed me to become a respected member of the village and very profitable on a regular basis.

If you want to do more than just survive as an entrepreneur, study your village, introduce yourself, teach this village, learn from this village, and most of all share with this village. As holistic entrepreneur’s we need each other in order to succeed, we really do need the village.

I could not imagine not being part of a village and when people ask me what it is I do now, I reply “I’m a healer, educator, and a believer of spiritual health amongst many others”.

Time is Money: How to Work Smarter, Not Harder

How to Work Smarter, Not Harder

How to Work Smarter, Not Harder

TIME IS MONEY:
HOW TO WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER

Article by Cinthia Singleton

Magazine: Issue #34

Work smarter not harder. All business mavens are taught this. As single proprietors… sigh… the pressure’s always on to put pedal to the metal and PERFORM. It’s impossible to do everything and yet they think they must, from parking valet to Communications Director to CEO.

Their business is theirs and theirs only.
Only they can possibly care that much about it, its success.
So much is at stake if it does not flourish or, hopefully not, fails.

The single proprietor is juggling so much, they often can’t see this “smarter” if it were to come up and bite them. Sound like you? Relax and slow down that clown car! There is only one of you and only so many hours in the day. Plan for it. Seek methods to attain the best possible work flow. Do the best you can. Learn from what does and doesn’t work. Make choices about how you spend your time. Delegate tasks when you can. Plan for that too. And don’t forget… time IS money and and it’s finite too. This is what needs to “work smarter” actually, acceptance of this as credo.

Start by keeping closer track of your time.

Tax preparation for example… It’s something you can do, don’t really like to but you feel, as many, that if one can, they should. It’s like tax preparation machismo (lol). Are all the receipts and invoices in one place and properly filed? Got all data, the correct forms? Procrastinate for days on end? Of course! Sit down and procrastinate some more 'til… it’s… finally… done. Proper supporting documents and forms attached? Is it signed? You do this quarterly, annually… it’s a rabbit hole of anxiety for many. The IRS says the average small business taxpayer spends approximately 24 hours on tax preparation. You? Isn’t your time worth implementing a few things to shave off some time from a task you don’t really enjoy?

1| Use a credit card for only business expenses.
2| Get a business software that pulls all your info into one place throughout the year so reports can be pulled easily.  Income. Expenses. Quarterly taxes paid. Link it and that business expense credit card.
3| Consider getting a qualified tax preparer so all you do is hand off to them the information from #2 and look over the final return before signing off.

These steps could save you several hours.

Streamline. Organize. Break projects down into the sum of the parts. Delegate. Same goes for designing the webpage, editing an article, painting your office… Delegating tasks - large and small, portions of them or as a whole - buys time that can be thrown into new, ‘growth’ projects that earn.

A Time-is-Money Mindfulness Exercise to perform.

1| Give yourself a hypothetical hourly wage as if you were just another employee at You Yourself and You LLC. For discussion purposes here, let’s say it’s $10/hr.
2| Begin tracking your tasks. How much time is spent on each? Track them in 15 minute blocks.
3| At the end of the day or week, add up the similar tasks and calculate your “wage” for each of them. 2 hours a week for, say, invoicing at $10/hr is $20/week, and over a year about $1000.

So maybe during crunch time part-time help can be part of Team You Yourself and You; it frees you up to work on a presentation, for example. Where is your time most valuable? At the $10/hr invoicing assignment or pitching a new client?

In time, this ‘bought time’ can be used to help you re-boot your creative mind, provide it a clean canvas. Time - such a commodity and yet it’s not traded on the NASDAQ. Lunch out of the office. A design class. Maybe an hour consult with an expert in your field. Put it on the calendar so it becomes an event. Events aren’t found on the treadmill of work, Work, WORK. Numbers there in black and white, see how a “time penny” saved could truly add up to money earned?

So much smarter; work THAT.

“Time is the most valuable coin in your life. You and you alone will determine how the coin will be spent.”
-Carl Sandberg

4 Strategies for Creating a Balanced Business Life

4 STRATEGIES FOR
CREATING A BALANCED BUSINESS LIFE

Article by Jeannine Chanin Penn
Photo Credit: Spell & the Gypsy Collective
Magazine: Issue #33

I am in the process of looking at High School’s for my son next year. I didn’t grow up in Los Angeles but in suburban NJ where there was one HS for all. In sprawling Los Angeles there are many. On one of the tours of a private HS, the Head of Schools said: “This generation is not just going to have multiple jobs but multiple careers.”

The truth is that doesn’t just apply to the up and coming generation but to anyone these days. A path to a career is great but it often leads to many other things along that path and being open to the possibilities may often bring you to an unexpected and happy place.

A great deal of my life I have been working as a Creative Director | Graphic Designer. But along the way, I have taken what I like to call “entrepreneurial side trips.” I co-created a playspace for familes with young children, worked as an event planner and dabbled in other things. For various reasons, I ultimately came back to Creative Direction as an entrepreneur and it was a very different picture than working for a big company. Here are some of the things I’ve learned in the process:

Know your strengths and weaknesses.

There are a lot of things I’m good at and there are some I’m really not. For me, doing more of what I love and excel at fuel me the most so I try and get help for the rest. The choices are to get better at the things you’re not good at (for me accounting) or build a team and find resources for those things you don’t excel at.

Work. Breathe. Play.

Be prepared to work hard, really hard, but remember to take time to play, meditate, exercise, paint, breathe or whatever will keep you sane and balanced. (see link below and download to help you ‘play’)

Stay informed.

One of the biggest ‘ah-has’ for me is how quickly things change now because of technology, social media and the internet. Make sure you are tapped in, sign-up for webinars, get into groups, attend workshops and keep up with what’s going on.

Know when to walk away.

Are you making money? You may have put a lot of time and energy into a business path that isn’t really a business. At some point, you may just want to cut your losses and rethink your path. Devastating as it may be, staying too long at something that just isn’t working is not only a time suck but life sucking.

Should You Get Off the Entrepreneurial Bandwagon?

SHOULD YOU GET OFF
THE ENTREPRENEURIAL BANDWAGON?

Should You Get Off the Entrepreneurial Bandwagon?

Should You Get Off the Entrepreneurial Bandwagon?

If you’re an entrepreneur, you’ve probably noticed that everyone and their mother wants to get on the entrepreneur train these days and with the coming of age millennials and Gen Y’s, that number continues to grow every year.

Is there enough business to go around?

The answer is “yes,” there is plenty of business to go around, because just as the number of entrepreneurial dreamers grow, so does the number of dreamers who need your service, however, the challenge is how do you stand out and get noticed in a very crowded sea?

You find your business success super power!

What is a business success super power? A business success super power is not like a Wonder Woman character, running around in a low cut sexy costume and stiletto boots, a business success super power is a very unique talent, skill or energy that all of us possess and feels natural to us, yet it’s not really something that others in your field can do. The super power that you have is not only going to draw your business tribe to you, but it will make the success of your business seem effortless and fun once you figure out your power and you know how to master it.

“With great power, comes great responsibility” -Spider Man

How to find your success super power

The first and absolute most important step is you have to drop the pity party attitude right now, if you have it! The pity party attitude is your kryptonite that will weaken you and keep you from both discovering and using your business success super power. If you have at any time, compared yourself to other people on social media or anywhere else, believe that others are more talented than you, feel like you’re not enough, or you wish you could be someone other than you, or any other self-doubt thoughts, then like Lex Luther trapping Superman, you’re surrounded by a wall of kryptonite that will eventually kill your success!

What comes easy to you?

Once you have escaped your “kryptonite” the next question you ask yourself is what has always come easy for you or what have most people complimented you on as being impressive? Here are a few examples of success super powers that are exceptionally powerful in business that most people don’t think about:

• Ability to really listen to others
• Ability to intuitively know what someone needs
• You have strong energy and enthusiasm that is contagious to others
•  You can walk into a room with power woman confidence and get noticed
• You can connect well with others
• You know how to connecting others to each other
• You’re a master networker
• You make others feel warm and appreciated
• You can make someone feel safe and protected
• You can create beautiful, inspirational content in a flash, that people thank you for
• You can write in a way that others can emotionally relate to
• You’re a story teller, you can keep everyone on the edge of their seats
• You’re super funny, you make others laugh even in uncomfortable situations
• You’re super deep and aware, you can discuss anything from spirituality to the existence of life on other planets
• You’re very personable, you can instantly make someone feel like their the most important person in your world
• You rock at customer service and make your customers feel valued and listened to
• You can speak with power and conviction
• You are a computer geek who can easily create sites and social media strategies that get noticed

How to use your super power

When it comes to your personal super power, what may come very easy and naturally to you may not for others. For example having a super power of high energy and enthusiasm that is contagious, is a strong power, because people who possess that super power can make a wet piece of coal seem exciting and valuable enough to get others excited and happy to pay the high asking price for that wet coal. Most people, regardless of how many books and courses they’ve taken, will never be able to master that skill, because that skill is not a skill that they are comfortable with, however someone may have the computer geek super power and she can sit all day at her computer, inspiring and energizing a whole community of online people who love what she is doing and they will buy what she has to offer, without ever seeing their faces or speaking to them.

Master your super powers

Make a list of all of your super powers, pick three of what you believe to be your strongest super powers and learn how to master and channel it into your business success. For example, if your super powers are master networker, able to listen to others and you connect well, then stop spending your time behind a computer and find ways to connect with others face to face. The more you master your success super powers, the easier it will be for you to say up, up and away and fly to your dreams quickly!

Success Secrets for Your Home Based Business

Success Secrets for Your Home Based Business

SUCCESS SECRETS FOR YOUR HOME BASED BUSINESS

So you gave The Man the Johnny Paycheck and shoved off.  It was simply time to put up your own shingle. You’d either been moonlighting or doing it part-time and now it’s time to say no to the j-o-b and BECOME CEO OF YOU INC! Kind of scary but it can be done with some planning and a lot of discipline. Sure, there’ll be no checks on the 1st and 15th of the month. Then again, no one will be standing over your shoulder. It’s all YOURS, baby. How fulfilling is that?

So why’s it so hard for many? Because Boss Man, for better or worse, provides immediate:

structure
accountability
a sense of security
comrades, work-mates

The reason for today’s musing is not to help remind you to save the money for a safety net or to learn the best way to set up the books. It is to help you get into a steady, productive groove in the home office and learn to embrace it not fear it. For those who have the kind of personality that derives momentum from what’s going on around them, working alone at the kitchen table is what’s most difficult about being self-employed. No water cooler nor meetings, deadlines or performance reviews, the mind wanders like an untethered balloon. Many lose motivation, heart and fire.

How to best SUCCEED at this self-employment, home office thing? Develop a system that starts the moment you rise. Simple. Basic.

1 :: After a nice sleep - with the phones and computers OFF upon turning in because as we disconnect we recharge - open your eyes and before you do anything else - STRETCH. Stretch from ears to toes. Breath into it without a thought in the world, no agenda, planning, lists.  If you meditate, now’s a great time. 5-15 minutes. Stretch again.

2 :: Roll out of bed and before you leave the room, make said bed. No, we’re not worried about how you’ll fare during a bunk inspection. We just want you to turn the page between home and home office; the bed, the bedroom is where your day begins and ends. Even if all you do it pull the comforter over everything and fluff the pillows, you’re saying to the world, “Game on!”

3 :: Get dressed for your day. That means get out of the robe and actually getting dressed. Not that you have to don a power suit and full make up but be conscious about putting together an outfit that helps you be comfortable AND feel put together. Don’t just grab the closest thing and/or what you wore the day before. Get dressed. As Karl Lagerfeld says, “A respectable appearance is sufficient to make people more interested in your soul.” At your home office, the respect starts with Within and so does the pride for Self.

4 :: Before heading over to the [ phone, computer, desk, dining room table ] take time for some grounding morning rituals:

Wash your face.
Eat your healthy breakfast.
Juice your even healthier shake.
Enjoy a quick walk with the dog or cat.
Brush and floss your teeth.
Fix your hair.
Follow the news.
Put on your favorite musical jam.

THEN you begin your day and so the work day begins. YOU, not the boss, gets to craft the day around YOU. Things to do. Tasks to complete. Orders that must go out. Appointments to be kept. When it comes time to take a break, luxuriate in choices:

lunch at a table
reading a magazine article
tea in the middle of the afternoon
working out to a youtube exercise video
walking outdoors
meeting a friend for coffee

Finally, learn when what tasks are better performed. You’re a whiz with numbers in the morning not so much in the afternoon? A.M. might be the time to prepare invoices. Perhaps your reading comprehension is clearer after lunch?  Afternoons are when to read those heady reports. We all have different optimum times of day for certain activities. Schedule yours accordingly, enjoying the freedom to do so.

Each and every day in your home office will be different; how enjoyable it is, depends on the structure YOU give it not no Boss Man. Just remember to turn the pages and close the doors between the worlds; find balance between the healthy lines.

And get ready to succeed.

“Hopped up out of the bed, turn my swag on… Now it’s time to turn it up, yeah…” Soulja Boy Tell’em

The ABCs of Embracing Your Unique Business Culture

The ABCs of Embracing Your Unique Business Culture

Too often we, as entrepreneurs, try to mimic or model our unique business after another business we have observed. This practice is definitely not conducive to stepping into your own unique purpose. We need to be careful about trying to mimic others because, inevitably, it cause us to fail or at least have major setbacks.

We are ALL unique!!!

Here are a few key points to help you embrace YOUR unique business culture:

A: Attitude - As an entrepreneur you obviously have a winner’s attitude. Embrace it, use it. An attitude of success and excellence will go far in developing your business culture. Keep your attitude in check- be sure you maintain a positive, move-it forward attitude.

B: Belief - Believe in yourself. This is an area many entrepreneurs struggle with. You want your business to succeed but you often question yourself and hold yourself back. When you believe in yourself, it shows. This belief is evident to others and is a vital part of establishing your business culture.

C: Commitment - Commit to your business endeavor. Don’t do it half-assed. Be known for your commitment- to yourself, to your business and to your customers/clients.

D: Dare - Dare to be you!! This is what makes YOU you! It is your uniqueness that will attract the clients/customers that you are meant to have. This daring to show and to be authentic will set you apart in the business world!

E: Embrace - Embrace your uniqueness and show the world through your Attitude, your Belief, you Commitment and your Daring!

These five areas will aid you in establishing yourself as a force to be reckoned with in whatever industry you choose for your business to serve.

9 Practices For a Better Business & Higher Self

Better Business & Higher Self

Better Business & Higher Self

9 PRACTICES FOR A BETTER BUSINESS & HIGHER SELF

Article by John Scardina
Magazine: Issue #28

The list of struggles when starting or operating your own business is long depending on how you approach and view your business plan. I could write about these struggles in detail for days and not cover all of them. There is only one struggle that should be addressed so that all others will be diminished greatly. One thing I have learned since being introduced to Reiki as a Master/Teacher is that everything is energy and amazing amount of this energy is within your control. With controlling this energy you have the ability to reach your higher self, a wonderful tool for self-improvement in life and business.

Two huge struggles when starting or running a business are self-doubt and taking advice from those around you who may be negative about your dreams of solving problems. Everyone reading this will understand exactly what I’m talking about if you own or are starting a business. The daily decisions of your business plan will leave you with doubt at almost every turn and those who fear for your failure or many others reasons, will tell you don’t take risks. These two reasons alone are enough to grasp the knowledge and practice on tuning into your higher self. This alone is your connection to your inner wisdom, which is connected to all universal energies and this is a place that holds every answer that you will need to succeed in business and life. We are wired for this and all have the ability to tap into our higher self, if only we practice.

In the process of accessing your higher self, some of the best practices are to...

1| Believe in that fact that your inner wisdom is already in you and connected to energy that is all things, or the divine if you will. It is in you and you can find it and access it with practice.

2| Remove for a moment the materialistic world and enter into the spiritual world. You want to explore your conscious and subconscious.

3| Make time for yourself alone, in order to hear your inner voice. This allows you to make room for your higher self to connect without a cluttered mind.

4| Become one with your inner voice, hold conversations. It will most certainly have the right answers.

5| Meditate if even for only a few moments a day.

6| Ask yourself every day, no matter what daily life or business activities may be, what you have learned today? Never stop learning.

7| Pay attention to your dreams, when daily stress and activities are removed from your mind, your inner voice speaks. Journal these dreams, we all dream about our businesses, don’t we? A surprising business plan, or at least part of it came to me while sleeping.

8| Focus more on the present, planning is great but the present is happening every minute. The practice of being conscious of every present moment without the concern of what has already happened and what will happen is just golden.

9| Be patient reaching and connecting with your higher self does not happen quickly for some. It is a process. Your higher self is always there just be patient and conscious of how to connect. Only then will you get the true support you need in all aspects of life and business.

It is with these practices that I have been able to contact my higher self and make business and life decisions that I already know the answers to that otherwise would have been changed by self-doubt and negative advice. We all want to succeed in business and as visionaries and change makers we do have the answers in us, we just need to make a direct connection to them. One more lesson learned from being attuned to Reiki.
