How to Find Your Passion and Live Your Purpose After 50

My favorite scene in the movie “The Holiday” is where Eli Wallack’s character is having dinner with Kate Winslett’s character and he comments on her relationship with the guy she is pining for. He tells her she is “leading lady material” though she is not acting like it.

3 Steps to Staying Positive

3 STEPS TO STAYING POSITIVE

3 Steps To Staying Positive

This past week, I was thinking about this article and then a friend I met at the social Facebooked me with this question, and I thought if they are feeling this question bubbling within them, then I bet a lot of us wonder how to stay positive, after we have been hurt.

The question: How do you stay so positive?

How does one change their focus in life when they feel like the odds are stacked against them?

The problem: When they feel like they would just be better being alone then with other people because they are afraid of being hurt by people like they have in the past so many times.

My answer for them and you:

This is challenging, I know, and what I do goes against the norm when it comes to HOW I stay positive even through life and people have hurt me in the past.

Honestly, I like many of you stayed on this marry-go-round for years looking outside myself at the situations, people and patterns that kept me (like my clients) thinking I was less than or in need of change.

Do you know that we are all showing up for one another like mirrors? We hear what we believe and attract who we are. That is not so easy to swallow, but it is powerful to digest.

To stay positive and change your focus, start by asking yourself powerful questions: What about the people in the past hurt you? Then turn this question around and ask yourself where are you holding a false belief about YOU being that way. Every negative situation has an equal positive it's the law of polarity.

Once you discover the gem in the patterns, people tend to totally disappear and new people show up – and you can put these 3 steps to defining yourself into action with ease:

1| Decide who you want to be. (Do you agree with what your past showed you, or now that you see it do you want to reinvent a new way of being.)

2| Discover new ways of being.  We don’t know what we don’t know.  If you want to be happy, then discover WHAT makes you happy and put these habits into action.

3| Listen to or hire someone to help me reprogram my belief systems and new situations.

What inspired you to start blogging on Instagram?
My sister, Jess. She was on my case about it for a couple years before I even started this venture, back when I was still living and bartending in NYC. She saw there was this new wave of successful influencers documenting their outfits and lives and thought I would be a great fit because of my shopping problem. I was too scared, embarrassed and afraid of what people might say or think so I just never did it. It wasn't until I moved to Hawaii, with this amazing backdrop and mixing my East Coast pieces with my new found tropical vibe that I saw it could be something. If not, just a great place to showcase where all of my hard earned money went. I started a secret/separate account and kept it from my family and friends because I was embarrassed. I started snapping away on the lanai with my camera timer and found that I loved it and was kind of decent at it. These days I couldn't be prouder of what I've built and no one should not do something because of what others might say. If I didn't put myself out there I would never be here.

We love your laid back, effortless style - Who was your first style icon?
My mother. Hands down. I would give anything to have her wardrobe from the 70s, 80s and 90s. She was a disco queen and had my Grandma sew her these absurd outfits that I would kill for today. She never cared what other people thought and just rocked these badass outfits around a small town in Upstate NY. My mom always said as I was growing up that we had the same style and I loved hearing that. Now she takes all of my clothes and I send a package home almost weekly..

When and how did your popularity really start to grow on Instagram?
I honestly don't really know the exact moment. I just started snapping away with old outfits that I would put together from my closet and tagging the designers and brands in hopes to get reposted. It started happening and my following started to grow. I also think being myself and sometimes brutally honest in my captions was a little bit different to what people were seeing and has helped me along the way. I don't like to take myself too seriously or try and pretend I'm perfect. Far from that!

Who generally takes your photos?
My amazing soon to be husband, Tom. We joke about it all of the time that it's his second job, but I honestly wouldn't have The Salty Blonde without him. He is such a huge support system as well and has helped me through this entire strange process. He's such a man's man and the last person you would think was an "Instagram Husband", but he has gotten pretty into it, which clearly I love. That being said, we still get into hilarious fights on the beach when shooting. Like when I end up with 8 chins in 500 shots or his surf buddies catch him shooting.

Which Instagram posts typically get the most love? What do you think people like most about them?
The not planned, 100% real me shots. There is something so relaxed and raw about them and I think my audience responds well to that. They prefer the authenticity of them and that's why I love my followers.

Your Instagram is so beachy and tropical— Is that how all your days are? How much work and planning go into all utopic photos?
I wish! I'm not going to lie, I do take work breaks at the beach because that's the only time I can genuinely relax when I'm there. Otherwise there's always something to shoot, I'm changing in the middle of the beach in 85 degree weather, people are around and so on. However, I am NOT complaining. It's a dream job, but it's definitely still a job.

You have such a huge Instagram following - Do you ever interact with them or read their comments? Any “best practices” to share with our readers to help with engagement?
Yes! I try to answer most questions. I also try and be mindful of my phone usage at the same time. As you can imagine, I am constantly on my phone for work, so once I post I try to put it away for awhile. Unfortunately, you can't answer all of the questions you get or else your phone would be glued to your hand all day. That's why I make sure to tag all the labels I'm wearing in every single post so the audience can see. And yes, we see all comments! Especially the shitty ones. Cyber bullies and trolls can beat it..

What’s the greatest benefit of doing what you do?
Working for yourself! The clothes and amazing opportunities don't hurt either..

What piece of advice would you give to someone who’s aspiring to build their brand using Instagram?
Just do it! Be yourself, original and have fun with it. And always remember good lighting is key.

Have any other amazing opportunities come up from being such an Instagram sensation?
Yes! I have traveled to amazing places I thought I would never see in my entire life, hosted rad parties, met awesome people and made new friends along the way. I am so grateful and still a little bit in shock.

Do you have any collaborations or features on the horizon?
Always. Which is a great thing!

Lastly we have to ask, filter or no filter - and if you could only ever just use one, what would it be?
Filter, for sure. I love the moodiness of them and if they blur out wrinkles and make you a little better looking in the process then it's a win/win. I'm a huge fan of VSCO app and pretty much just use their filters, especially Instant.

Surviving as an Entrepreneur: It Takes a Village

SURVIVING AS AN ENTREPRENEUR:
IT TAKES A VILLAGE

It Takes A Village

It Takes A Village

I was thinking the other day about how my life has unfolded over the recent years and all events that have brought me to where I am now as an entrepreneur. Every choice I’ve made has happened right or wrong for a single purpose in order to bring me here today. I did manifest and meditate along the way visualizing where I wanted to be, and my vision has become extremely close to my current reality. But I wondered ever so deeply, “why am I here now?” When I tell people about what I do in business, certainly if they are not from the same holistic realm they look a bit bewildered. “I’m a healer, an educator, and a believer in spiritual health.” I receive so many questions of what it is that I actually do from those who not found a path yet, or those who belong to another village. So I answer as many questions as I can in order to inform people of all possibilities if only they choose a path, their own path.

It even gets a bit stranger for me when I tell them that I often write for an amazing women’s entrepreneurial magazine. This one sentence statement gets me looks that are so entertaining. I often wonder myself why I’m here doing this right now at this point and realized it’s what I have always manifested, “Being a respected part of a village.”

It does take this village for all of us to succeed in business, those who are like minded, searching for answers and dedicated to helping others succeed. Without the help of this village we are just solitary entrepreneurs struggling along a lonesome path just surviving in business without the help of others. This is a path I first followed when I knew everything or at least thought I did. This proved to be just an existence that was just simple and rarely profitable. The rarely profitable part was something that I have never manifested at any level, but the solitary path nurtured a lack of profitability for a long time before I came to realize that it does really take a village. I needed to become part of this village and by doing my homework I educated myself on networking skills and learned about the village and introduced myself. Learning and sharing with this village has allowed me to become a respected member of the village and very profitable on a regular basis.

If you want to do more than just survive as an entrepreneur, study your village, introduce yourself, teach this village, learn from this village, and most of all share with this village. As holistic entrepreneur’s we need each other in order to succeed, we really do need the village.

I could not imagine not being part of a village and when people ask me what it is I do now, I reply “I’m a healer, educator, and a believer of spiritual health amongst many others”.

4 Success Strategies to Help You Stay Focused

4 SUCCESS STRATEGIES TO
HELP YOU STAY FOCUSED

Article by Marlyne Pierce

Magazine: Issue #36

Stay Focused And Win In Business And Life

Stay Focused And Win In Business And Life

Success is never a straight line, assuming you've lived pass the age of 13 - you know this to be a fact! However, one big predictor of success and happiness is your ability to be persistent and remain in the game, even after upset and disappointment. Here are my favorite tips for staying the in game, and winning, time and time again.

Winning Tip 1 :: Refocus on the Prize

When I was a sprinter in high school, my coach always told the team, “no matter where you are in the race or how many people are ahead of you, never look back. Even if you are in front - never look back.”

Looking back slows us down.
Looking back takes us out of the game and into comparison.

Looking back takes our eyes off the prize and could literally mean we lose out on our win.
Even if you do slip up and take a glance, remember! Winning sprinters NEVER look back. Quickly refocus on the prize. Keep your eyes in your lane and on your goal. It’s the best path forward.

Winning Tip 2 :: Be Selective

When I was growing up, I use to be upset when I found out my friends didn’t tell me ALL that was happening with them. Then as I matured, I realized that sometimes even with the best intentions, if your friends do not have the same vision or foresight as you do, they can stunt your ideas before you even have a chance to fully evaluate them. The fact is you have to be selective. If you know someone will kill your dream by being negative, asking too many uncomfortable questions, or giving you unsolicited advice - don’t share your infantile ideas with them. Wait until you have planted your seed and it has roots, then you can share it with a wide audience. Especially in the early stages of your idea, be selective and share only with other like-minded winners, mentors who have taken a similar path and individuals who you know can understand where you are going and give you guidance that will help you to flourish.

Winning Tip 3 :: Desire is Destiny Calling

No matter what your situation might look like, remember that if you have a deep desire in your heart, you can achieve it. We are built that way, providing the situation is healthy and good for you, your desire, your courage, and your confidence to go after it, can be just the fuel you need to achieve it. If you are pursuing a goal that is not your true and deep heart’s desire, you may find that you become frustrated very quickly. You may find everything to be a struggle and success will be difficult and hard won. Depending on how you were raised, you may have a belief that working harder to achieve a goal, even if you heart is not in it, is the only path to success. But, unless that goal serves a much higher purpose for your life, you will only be wasting your effort and you will soon be burnt out. So when you have a setback, don’t be so quick to beat yourself up. Sometimes you might just need a moment to reevaluate and assess if your next best step is aligned with your heart’s desire or if it will lead to the ultimate outcome you want to create. Your heart’s desire is truly the compass you need to achieve your destiny.

Winning Tip 4 :: Stay in Prayer

When others try to downgrade you. Prayer and connection with the divine will upgrade you. Stay in prayer and meditation, even a few minutes per day can make a world of difference in lighting your path. Your spirit needs that connection to stay energized. It is really the key to being able to refocus, to have the discernment about who to share your ideas with, and to know without a doubt that your deep desire is meant to propel you towards your ultimate destiny.

How to Find the Gold in your Story

PERSONAL BRANDING: FINDING THE GOLD IN YOUR STORY

Finding The Gold In Your Story

Finding The Gold In Your Story

Article by Denita Austin
Magazine: Issue #36

Most of us are not comfortable with sharing our story with the world. We may feel embarrassed about sharing our truth or we may think that our story isn’t that great. Trust me, I’ve been there and it’s not a good feeling, so I highly recommend getting off that train ride right now. What do I mean by the gold in your story? Your story is unique simply because you are. No one has experienced your journey quite like you and no one can share their story the way you do.

The power of story is absolutely incredible. I have always been fascinated and inspired by people's stories from all walks of life. I strongly believe that when we take the time to listen to someone's story, it allows us to understand each other on a higher level. One story can transform someone's life and encourage them to speak their truth. A heartfelt story creates a space to communicate and empathize with an open heart. Would you agree?

Finding the gold in your story isn’t hard. The gold in your story is the emotion behind your experience. No one is going to share your personal story the way that you do.

Here are the questions that will start those creative juices flowing.
:: What is your story?
:: What was your child hood like?
:: What past memory are you holding on to and why?
:: What have you learned from your most memorable experience?
:: How can your story inspire someone else?

Depending on our upbringing, this will determine how we view the world and how we communicate with others. Keep in mind, we all have different backgrounds and experiences, so we can’t assume that someone is aware of how we may view a situation. This is why it’s super important to share your story. I remember going out with a group of friends one day to a lovely restaurant. I was super excited about it. It was an opportunity to bond, share and connect. I’m all for that every chance I get. This is a prime example of why I enjoy personal connections. We learn so many extraordinary things about each other and my personal story highlights my journey of connecting with others. More about that later… Everyone at the restaurant had this perception of me before they even took the time to connect with me. This is what they shared after we broke the ice in conversation. I’m sure you have experienced the same thing. Let’s just say by the end of the night, their perception changed only because they took the time to listen to my story of who I am, what I stand for and how I grew up.

Stories are golden simply because they inspire and transform lives every single day. When was the last time you shared your story or allowed someone to share theirs? I encourage you to do this the next time bonding is on your agenda for the day.

Losing Hair? How to Grow Your Hair Back Naturally

LOSING HAIR?
HOW TO GROW YOUR HAIR BACK NATURALLY

Hair Growth Is Regulated By Hormones And Metabolism

Hair Growth Is Regulated By Hormones And Metabolism

Article By Melva Williams

Magazine: Issue #36

Hair can be considered a barometer of your health because hair cells are some of the fastest growing in the body. Hair growth is regulated by hormones and metabolism, so anything that affects your hormones and metabolism also affects hair growth and hair loss.

Most changes in your body will be noticed through your hair because cells can shut down to redirect energy elsewhere. The types of changes that can cause hair loss include hormonal changes, poor diet and nutritional deficiencies, medications, surgery, medical conditions, and thyroid disease.

When your body’s central regulatory role in glucose metabolism and the way it uses insulin has low activity, one of the symptoms is the ability to grow hair. This can be confirmed through a blood test. As well as certain medications and medical conditions that affect your bloodstream which in turn interacts with your metabolism.

If you’ve just had surgery, started or stopped any kind of treatments, if you are experiencing any kind of hair loss be patient. Once your hormones or metabolism go back to normal range the hair breakage will normally slow down and eventually stop.

There are also ways to help aide in growing your hair back faster by raising your metabolism because it will increase blood flow in your scalp. Exercise is one of the ways to help increase blood flow in the scalp, (like when you give blood and they ask you to squeeze the ball). The other way is to eat a healthier diet of protein which hair is mainly made up of, green leafy vegetables and juicy fruits, nuts and plenty of water.

For hair loss, I normally recommend multi vitamins, zinc, biotin, iron if deficient, and vitamin D. Most African American women are vitamin D deficient for lack of sunlight which causes dry scalp they think is dandruff. All these things are in unison with the healthier diet, they go hand-in-hand, or it’s like putting fertilizer on the grass but not watering it.

Hair loss can be one of the most frustrating and scary things but don’t be afraid talk to your stylist, doctor, or dermatologist about it.
