Scarves. So pretty, snappy, dramatic, classic, or feminine. There’s no piece of accessory simpler to add to you outfit. Simple? Yes. SIMPLE. The hard part about wearing a scarf is that it is so versatile, leaving the wearer opportunity to “reinvent” herself each time she adds one to her ensemble.  That might be the problem really, how many combinations there are with one (how its worn) and how it lets one improvise and play with it as she puts the look together. Funny, we want creativity, and yet when the scarf says, “Go for it. Show me what you got, my pretty,” we fumble and curse.

So you’re standing in front of the mirror. Dressed and ready to go or not… that outfit looks, well, a little plain. It needs something… something… but what? Instead of adding more jewelry or a brighter lipstick, go for a scarf! Pull your hair up with it pin up girl style. Wrap it loosely around your neck, one end through a looped one. Maybe you like a little more form? Then there’s the simple kerchief style. Of course, how you wear it would depend on the season. Yes, there is a scarf - depending on material, weight and size, of course - for all seasons. Ask your Parisienne amies who wear them year-round.

The concepts to get past are that scarves are strictly for:

|1| Winter and keeping warm.
|2| Old ladies
|3| Those who inherited GrandMama’s and don’t have the heart to donate them to the Goodwill

Consider them the punctuation at the end of the sentence, the bow around the package, both giving clarity and form. Scarves. Between the wealth of tutorials on You Tube and the blogs with photos and diagrams, there’s a scarf style (or at least 30) for you. Try one, then improvise from there. Your features and outfit dictate as well as your balls to dare yourself to TRY something different and experiment. See what happens. When you can work with what’s in the mirror… dash out the door and greet that day. The secret of wearing scarves is that they look effortless; YOU look spirited.

Some basics; Some suggestions…

|1| Wear a scarf that has a color that adds a little pizzazz to what you’re wearing. Maybe it has that little bit of pimento that is also in the plaid of your coat. BAM. Instant ensemble.
|2| Large diaphanous silk scarves worn loosely over the shoulders are fun. In the summer they are a life-saver when that a.c. is on.
|3| Infinity scarves are fun pure and simple… the colors, the different weights in yarn and fabric. In the winter they can be make that drafty room chill less.
|4| Vintage shops offer some great variety in all areas and at all price points. Maybe GrandMama and her generation were onto something with their scarf collections and the parade of design and novelty prints; art for your bod! So many from which to choose, from abstracts to poodles.

Don’t. Fear. The. Scarf. Not any more. Try one as you would a necklace; put it on and see how it enchants, plays with the light and ‘moves’.

A scarf is truly one of the most affordable, jauntiest accessory you can get even if all you do it tie it on the strap of your purse. Till others get wind of this, you’ll stand out.  ;)

"Reinvent new combinations of what you already own. Improvise. Become more creative. Not because you have to, but because you want to. Evolution is the secret for the next step.”
-Karl Lagerfeld

Mindful Design: Healing Spaces For A Nourished Life

Healing Spaces For A Nourished Life

MINDFUL DESIGN: HEALING SPACES FOR A NOURISHED LIFE

Article by Jennifer Nesbit Holt

Magazine: Issue #31

I spent years working with individuals of all walks of life in an intimate, healing capacity as a sound healer. I won’t say I was going through the motions but I will say the work was consistent and basic, yet, extremely profound.

From the very beginning stages of owning my businesses, I was adamant about my client’s experience unfolding before they entered the door of our beautiful bungalow. Maybe it’s my type A personality or possibly a deeper “knowing”, but to me, impression is everything and so was establishing a cultured community.

I always felt I was a bit of a loan ranger in my days of one-on-one healing because I considered everything from colors, temperature, mood and visual appeal rather than just the healing modality itself. The experience started with a keenly thought out website to special touches outside my studio space to the visceral experience one felt as they walked through the door. THEN a warmer, deeper healing could begin.

For risk of rocking the boat, these “collective” qualities are not easily found in holistic healing spaces or many business for that matter. Most business owners don't have the insatiable craving for good design, a background in fine arts and an established field of sound healing that bridges a gab between math, science and energy.

Truly, it was only when I surrendered to every aspect of myself that was I able to really see what experience people needed. From there, it took little to no time to discover I was on the right track. Why? Because EVERYONE who walked through the door of my studio told me they felt a shift and experienced such beauty on the inside and outside.

I obsessively HAD to make any and all connections of the pulse of life to ensure a powerful result in healing. I knew that the psychological detail to design was a first step in forming a solid relationship with my clients and the last step was creating the profound internal changes they were seeking plus a lasting memory.

Clients must trust you in order for your work together to be effective.

As a designer of of healing sound, spaces and life, emphasis on the “whole” person is crucial if you are looking to make a difference in your client’s lives. As a designer, I want to encourage you to go deeper and think past the visual aesthetics of creating a space and look to the senses through which we experience life.

Help your clients really investigate what makes them unique. What do they really want? Need? Even if you have clients who are hell bent on a particular design esthetic, they are still looking for a feeling. A connection. And it is your job to see that it happens. How can you make the psychology of interior design safely plunge to the soul level?

I’ve learned that through quietly creating a beautiful path into my healing space of business, I’ve created an “unexplained” draw for people to want to work with me. You, too, can do this and it’s starts by looking into your own soul. Who do you want to attract into your life? How do you want to feel?

If you are wavering in uncertainty your design message will be lost and you will attract confused (difficult) individuals into your realm. Without tapping into profound experiences and energetic shifts that have made lasting impressions in your own life, you will not be able to do this for others.

The time is now for your to unleash your unique business design voice so you can help your clients immerse in purpose and community to make their own authentic impact in the world.

Tres Branifique! Building a Brand Heritage

TRES BRANIFIQUE! BUILDING A BRAND HERITAGE

Tres Branifique! Building a Brand Heritage

Tres Branifique! Building a Brand Heritage

Branding has almost become colloquial these days, yet I bet that when you think about branding, the first thing that comes to mind is some type of product or business. Yet when it comes to branding, the scope extends far beyond products or services. Just about anything can be a brand these days. Let’s take cities for instance, and, for the sake of this article, let’s take Paris!

Steeped in a history rich with art and design, The Paris Brand has been developing for centuries. Its gorgeous architecture, pristine parks, extraordinary cuisine, and exquisite fashion all contribute to a global brand image of one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

Even before stepping foot in Paris, years of browsing through fashion magazines and watching old movies helped me conjure up images of romance, beauty, and sensual delights.

Fall is an incredibly wonderful time to visit Paris.  Here are some reasons why the brand heritage is alive and well:

Savor the Experience
For my husband, Paris is all about its history; the crypts of the Cluny Museum, the underground maize and macabre past of the city’s sewers, the audacity of Napoleon; endless hours spent in L’Ecole de Militaire and Musee D’L’Armee.

For me, Paris is taking a walk in the Jardin du Luxembourg, eating a croissant on the I’sle St       Louis a Sunday morning, having afternoon tea at Marriage Freres, enjoying a chocolate chaud at Angelina, or riding the number 6 metro line just to get that first glimpse of the Eiffel Tower as the train speeds along, running outside, as it nears the Bir-Hakim stop.

Before You Go
I often find the planning stages of a trip almost as fun as the trip itself.  Maybe it is because I immerse myself in the process.  This includes reading books that take place in the country I am about to visit, watching movies that were filmed in that city and creating a playlist of related tunes on my iPhone.

Here are some recommendations to enhance the planning portion of your trip to Paris:

The Piano Shop on the Left Bank
    The Book of Lost Fragrances
    Hidden in Paris
It’s Not Love, It’s Just Paris

Once You Arrive
I recommend that you start your site seeing or exploring immediately. DO NOT TAKE A NAP. Seriously, this is Paris!
One of the best ways to see Paris than is on foot.  Here are USA Today’s best walking tour recommendations:

Self-Guided|
Those with an independent streak and no patience for groups can run their own walking tours with directions that are either printed on paper or downloaded to an MP3 player. An example of the former are the free tours offered by Paris Walking Tours. Depending on what you choose, you can visit such favorites as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Tromphe and the Champs-Elysees. The tours are quite basic, explaining directions and the names of what you are seeing but giving no historical background. Travel guru Rick Steves adds humor and explanations to his free MP3 audio tours, which include a historic Paris walk and specific tours for the Louvre and Musee D’Orsay.

Free|
If you prefer being guided by a human being but don't have a lot of money, then free guided walking tours are for you. These trips are characterized by enthusiastic, native Parisian volunteers and very large crowds who come and go throughout the narration. One example is Discover Walks, whose walks take you to several Paris landmarks, specific areas such as the Latin Quarter or to specific sights like Notre Dame. Walks typically occur two or three times a day, rain or shine, and require no reservations. Simply show up at the appointed place and time, and look for the pink outfits. Being volunteers, the guides appreciate tips at the end of the walk, though they are not required.

Commercial|
Companies that run commercial walking tours may offer smaller groups, greater selection, gift certificates and souvenirs. Reservations may be required, though some also allow you to just show up. As an example, Classic Walks covers such broad topics as Classic Paris, the French Revolution and World War II, or more specific areas such as Montmartre. If you want the intimacy of a walking tour, with the speed of a vehicle, the company also offers tours on Segways and bicycles. These types of trip cover more ground and enable you to reach widely spaced sights in shorter times.

Private|
Private tours cost the most money but allow you to focus on only the topics that interest you. You can take pre-planned itineraries, but take detours and skip sights you find boring. Or you can have the guide plan an excursion for you from scratch. Advanced reservations are necessary. An example is Context Paris Tours, which is endorsed by such travel luminaries as Fodor's, Frommer's, National Geographic and Insight Guides. They call their guides docents because they have advanced degrees in such subjects as art history, cuisine or archaeology, and feature a large educational component in their tours. Their planned itineraries are divided into themes like architecture or gastronomy and offer unusual views such as the belly of Paris and Modernist buildings.

Taking the Metro or the Bateaubus in season are other great ways to take in the city.

What to See
You can spend weeks, months even years getting to know The City of Light, but if your time is limited, you can still get a great feeling for this very special place in a short period of time. Here is your highlight list.  If you are a museum person, browse the list for the ones that best suit your taste, if your someone who prefers being outside and mingling with the locals, focus on the site list and the neighborhood list.

    Eiffel Tower
    Notre Dame
    St. Chapelle

Designer Myths That Keep You From Discovering Your Design Voice

Designer Myths That Keep You From Discovering Your Design Voice

Article by Jennifer Nesbit Holt

Magazine: Issue #29

If you’ve sought out self-help tools to re-align with your creative process, or quietly tracked the success of other designers, you have firsthand experience of the power creative flow has to not only engage and ignite a following, but also to produce better bodies of work to support a life of freedom and creativity you desire.  There are many myths we tell ourselves as designers, not to mention a pile of mistakes.

Maybe you’ve even been one of those people who secretly feels you're not good enough because you didn't get your design education from the most elite school. You might even suffer from low self-esteem when it comes to thinking you can grow your design business to the next level. You know in your bones you are doing what you love (and your good at it) but you want in on the secrets of award winning designers.

So why does the idea of putting yourself first have you quaking in your boots?

Let me guess…

  • You don’t mind a little grunt work, but you don't know how to grow a successful design business in such a saturated market.
  • You love the idea of delivering high quality projects to more prestigious clients, but you bite your nails, second guessing if you're 'good enough'.
  • You’ve got foolproof concepts in mind and you're tired of playing small .

Ready to unlock Pandora's box to release the blocks holding you back from being seen and heard as a designer?

Busy designers (like you) don’t have a SECOND to waste on activities that aren’t directly linked to profit. If you’ve ever tried creating a regular self-care routine before, you know that sinking feeling of guilt that you 'should' be in your creative zone rockin' out projects through to completion. (Ugh! It’s the worst, isn’t it?)

In my experience, I’ve found that four major myths are to blame for designer doubt and not feeling like your good enough. I’m going to debunk those myths for you, and show you how to replace them with truly simple, effective practices that will not only reward all your hard work, but have you doing kart wheels in the grass with excitement.

Myth #1: Creating is organic, easy and effortless.

Now this myth, for the most part, is not how we see ourselves as designers but how non-creatives view our process. Our work is always fun and our ideas flow abundantly. Sheesh!

Now there are some artists who do fall into this mindset but we call them amateurs (or egotistical ass-hats)! However, a word of caution...if you are seasoned in your career, you can slip back into this mindset when you start berating yourself for not being good enough. The more creative blocks pile up, the more you ask, “Why is this not easy anymore?” Boo hoo, boo hoo (been there).

Self-care must take priority and should be treated as a delicacy that you infuse into your day, EVERY day.

Specifically, my Creative Life Series includes holistic strategies designed for the hard working designer in mind.  It also includes actionable components that you can use while you work! This is SO not about studying the best graphic design books.

And when everything lines up perfectly, your business grabs hold of a healthy and effective productive machine that acts as the backbone of your growing design business and gives you the opportunity to grow and soar at will.

Myth # 2: Every project you create should be perfect.

I hear ya, sweet thing!  Designers are notorious for perfectionism because...well, it goes with the territory of getting a concept through to completion.  Also, depending upon your field of design, it might even have to do with the safety of others.

But here is the thing....if you don't feed that nasty little critter called 'perfectionism', the flow of ideas comes easier and the stress starts to disappear.  Imagine for a moment that you design in a peaceful state and not a reactionary-took-some-no-dozz state?

How? How can you be gentle on yourself, how can you stop nit picking every idea apart?  I'll tell ya how... Just to name a few, some of the best sources of for self-care are things like yoga, mediation, sound healing (that's my fav), movement, etc...  I want to encourage you to find something this week that helps take you out of the series-must-do-it-right mode and into some peace and serenity. Yes! This does require action...but you've already proven that you’re willing to put in effort–you just need the reassurance of knowing that every bit of energy you put into yourself IS for your business and will come back to you tenfold.

What you CAN’T afford to do is waste time and energy in perpetual “figure it out” mode.

Myth #3 – Designers must struggle, must suffer and always put the client first to be truly successful.

When you put self-care first you are able to communicate effectively through your work as well as to your clients.  Concepts become fluid.  You can not longer operate on the notion that hard work means misery. When you focus on your own sanity, you will attract the right clients and projects to enjoy your life with confidence and gumption!

Hint:  You are a treasure trove of abundance and when you open the doors to more business abundance, you will know JUST what to do when things get shaky.  (Scroll down to grab my freebie and discover exactly what I do to recover my footing)

Myth #4 – “What if I fail to produce or get stuck? Will my career will fall apart?”

False, false false! Self-awareness and Self-care strategies are a must if you are looking to grow your design business.

And if you’re reading this post RIGHT NOW, then you’re in a unique position to catch wind of this new strategic approach before anyone else in your niche does, and in doing so, claim your stake in the rich blue ocean of growing your business to the next level, and it's not about where you got your education.

So chances are that even if your competitors are already using these holistic strategies, you can gain a competitive advantage by being the FIRST to build a design business backed with full intention, creative flow and magnetic energy based on some of the proven techniques, and strategies that I’m about to share with you. Keep reading . . . now that you know the 4 designer's myths, I’ve created a DETAILED, free cheat sheet to help you with your first (or next!) step to finding your authentic design voice . . .

My wish for you is to sidestep the countless traps that make most designers burnout, and instead learn how to create a masterpiece called your own design biz.

Secrets to Get Out of Your Style Rut

5 EASY (AND SURPRISING) SECRETS TO GET OUT OF YOUR STYLE RUT

Article by Eyenie Schultz

Magazine: Issue #29

One of the biggest complaints I hear from women is, “I feel so frumpy and uninspired! I’m in a total rut with my style and don’t know how to get out of it…”

Do you ever feel this way when it comes to your clothes? Like what you wear has absolutely nothing to do with the badass you truly are inside? It sucks!

Let’s face it, between growing your business, taking care of clients, spending time with family, friends, etc., style probably doesn’t feel like much of a priority. And if you’re like most of the whip-smart and creative Overachieving Misfits I work with, chances are you sorta roll your eyes at style and think it’s fluffy, shallow and girly to care about it (despite your off-the-hook taste).

What happens when something like style isn’t given care, attention, love and energy? It gets dull, boring, heavy, and uninteresting. And when something feels this way – like more of a burden or task - we tend to ignore it or do the bare minimum. Yikes.

This is where you fall into that trance or fog, where you go through the motions without really being connected to what you’re actually putting on your body.

Well, I say BASTA! Style is way more than just clothes and fashion, it’s about how you’re showing up in the world and visually expressing who you are.

Here are 5 easy ways to shake yourself right on out of that uninspiring rut and up your style ante in a major way!

1 :: Dress with intention. This means actually giving time, mindfulness, care and energy to what you put on your body and owning it instead of just reaching for whatever’s clean or handy. It doesn’t have to take lots of time or feel daunting; in fact, we want it to feel like the total opposite. It’s more about taking ownership of and pride in what you decide to wear by seeing it as an expression of who you are and how you feel that particular day. Dress in a way that says, “I meant to do this, and I own the EFF out of it!”

2 :: Use clothes to make you feel how you want to feel. The mega smart women I work with often find themselves putting together outfits using logic and following lots of rules that they either learned from a family member or friend, or picked up along the way.

But, if you think of style as art – as a true expression of you, your emotions, energy and desires – there’s no room for thought! Get dressed from a space of feeling, and ask yourself, “How do I want to feel today?” then go from there.

3 :: Play dress-up. Go into your closet for one to two hours with the intention of having fun! Explore, discover, play, create…. Put things together in a way that doesn’t make logical sense and experience how it feels. It brings freshness and excitement to your current wardrobe. I guarantee you’ll come up with some pretty smokin’ outfits that would have never occurred to you (because again, you’re feeling, not thinking.)

4 :: Reconnect with yourself. What are some things that you love? Some stuff that makes you swoon and gives you butterflies? It’s easy to forget something as simple as what makes us giddy and floaty, but it’s super duper vital to avoid slipping into a rut and staying there.

Start paying attention to the things around you and what gets your attention – this goes for clothes! When what you wear is in alignment with what you desire and love, it feels WAY more exciting than just throwing on a default outfit.

5 :: Keep your mindset/limiting beliefs in check. Are there recurring thoughts or deeply-rooted limiting beliefs that keep you from fully expressing who you are through what you wear? If you don’t feel worthy or deserving of wearing beautiful things (even though you have kick-ass taste and really want to), you’ll keep reverting back to the standard meh outfits that communicate, “I’m not worthy or deserving.”

If you believe that you have to lose X lbs. before you can start dressing in a way that makes you feel beautiful, chances are you’ll find another excuse even after losing the weight.

Ch-ch-checkity check yourself before you wreck yourself and your style! Remember that no matter your shape, size, circumstances, budget, you deserve to feel AH-MAZING and in alignment with what you wear!

Here’s to jumping out of your rut and getting into your NEON style groove!
