Why You Should Dress For Style, Not For Size

Have you ever been at a beautiful boutique and loved the shit out of a dress and thought, “I’m not supposed to wear that with my body type” or “If I lost 10 lbs., maybe…” Or how about, “It’s beautiful, but it’s not for me…”??

How to Negotiate Like a Pro a Vintage Dealer

HOW TO NEGOTIATE LIKE A PRO VINTAGE DEALER

Vintage.  You want the energy and uniqueness that comes with it. Tons of great stuff out there, from clothing to home decor.  Flea markets.  eBay.  Etsy.  Rubylane. Lots of options.

And let’s face it, the quest for the perfect vintage dress, screen print or hand mirror is especially FUN for those who love the hunt.  But more and more bargain hunters are hitting the vintage venues for DEALS.  Never hurts to ask, right?  Certainly not.  Just remember that it’s all in HOW you do.

Here are some tips to help you enter the negotiating process confidently and as respectively as possible:

1) There is no one universal shop policy.  They - be it a flea market vendor or Etsy seller - vary from shop to shop; they are crafted based upon personal parameters.

2) Many dealers DO factor in a % of wiggle room amount for price bargaining.

3) Don’t treat negotiating a deal as if it’s haggling but rather a friendly discussion.

4) The asking price is a springboard point of discussion.  Sure, talks could go into the NO zone or you don’t hear the sweet spot number you’d like but start with the asking price and work from there not 70% of it.

I love this [ brooch, hat, table, rug, box of comics ]  and was wondering if this is your final price?

The classic “Is this your best price?” or “Can you do better on the pricer?” works too but remember, it’s a dance and with every dance, someone’s got to lead… but elegantly.

4) Offer a counter price (remember the 10% rule) rather than an open-ended request for a discount.  Remember.:  friendly discussion.   An open-ended request for a discount can come off as a demand.

5) The discount vendors can give depends on many factors.  Maybe they have money in restoring or cleaning that dress.  Perhaps the estate jewelry is consigned and must be sold at a contractual price set by its owner and the shop.  Whatever the reason, don’t badger, cajole, taunt or berate.  Respect the space, continue to look around.  Often this gives the vendor a little time to reconsider the offer or counter with an alternative course of action such as, for example, layaway.

6) If you hear, “I’m sorry but our prices are firm,” it’s bad form to press hard.  It is, though, appropriate to extend calling card and say, “Well, if you [ change your mind, have a sale, carry one that is priced in my price range, etc ], please contact me.”  This technique has worked more times than you know; again, as in 5), the vendor has time to re-consider, review month-end sales figures or discuss the offer with a consignor.  You just never know.

7) There are sometimes better times to ask for a discount.  Say, if you’re at the flea market, approach with an offer at the end of the day when they’re packing up.  One less thing to pack could possibly become yours to tote away. ;  )

But remember, the average vintage seller IS the owner of a small business.  They put a lot of time into their shop and inventory and profit margins are generally small.  A little, no a LOT, of kindness goes a long way.  Compliment their store windows, the time put into displays.  If they’re online, a little pat on the back for great photography is appreciated.  Don’t just lunge with a request for a slamming deal.  These are people who put their heart and soul into their work and they take it very personally.  That said…

1) Don’t ask for a better price on items $20 and less.
2) Don’t clamor for the deal so much you insult a piece in the process.  It’s vintage and as such there might have a ding or spot.  Picking it apart to get a better prices comes off as rude and puts a dealer on the defensive.  Just ask if you can get a better price or make an offer.
3) The more, the merrier.  The more you purchase, perhaps the more a dealer will be willing to work with you.  Turnover speaks volumes.
4) Cash talks; no fees = sweet fast deals.
5) Don’t try to price match.  This is a small operation. It is NOT Best Buy.
6) Don’t bring up the other vintage shop’s prices.  Bad form. Best you shop there instead.
7) So you paid $___ the hippie boots in 1969 and feel they should be nearer that price.  The shop’s bills are being paid with 2016 currency.

Just remember that it’s all in HOW you ask and when shopping for vintage, you are, unlike in the department or box stores, getting a shopping adventure that includes a real person who sourced with love.  For those who love the journey, shopping vintage is YOUR kind of adventure.
Be polite, always be nice.  Make sugar your favorite spice. (from the Looney Tunes Show)

Scarf it Up & Dress for Success

SCARF IT UP & DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Scarf It Up & Dress for Success

Scarves. So pretty, snappy, dramatic, classic, or feminine. There’s no piece of accessory simpler to add to you outfit. Simple? Yes. SIMPLE. The hard part about wearing a scarf is that it is so versatile, leaving the wearer opportunity to “reinvent” herself each time she adds one to her ensemble.  That might be the problem really, how many combinations there are with one (how its worn) and how it lets one improvise and play with it as she puts the look together. Funny, we want creativity, and yet when the scarf says, “Go for it. Show me what you got, my pretty,” we fumble and curse.

So you’re standing in front of the mirror. Dressed and ready to go or not… that outfit looks, well, a little plain. It needs something… something… but what? Instead of adding more jewelry or a brighter lipstick, go for a scarf! Pull your hair up with it pin up girl style. Wrap it loosely around your neck, one end through a looped one. Maybe you like a little more form? Then there’s the simple kerchief style. Of course, how you wear it would depend on the season. Yes, there is a scarf - depending on material, weight and size, of course - for all seasons. Ask your Parisienne amies who wear them year-round.

The concepts to get past are that scarves are strictly for:

|1| Winter and keeping warm.
|2| Old ladies
|3| Those who inherited GrandMama’s and don’t have the heart to donate them to the Goodwill

Consider them the punctuation at the end of the sentence, the bow around the package, both giving clarity and form. Scarves. Between the wealth of tutorials on You Tube and the blogs with photos and diagrams, there’s a scarf style (or at least 30) for you. Try one, then improvise from there. Your features and outfit dictate as well as your balls to dare yourself to TRY something different and experiment. See what happens. When you can work with what’s in the mirror… dash out the door and greet that day. The secret of wearing scarves is that they look effortless; YOU look spirited.

Some basics; Some suggestions…

|1| Wear a scarf that has a color that adds a little pizzazz to what you’re wearing. Maybe it has that little bit of pimento that is also in the plaid of your coat. BAM. Instant ensemble.
|2| Large diaphanous silk scarves worn loosely over the shoulders are fun. In the summer they are a life-saver when that a.c. is on.
|3| Infinity scarves are fun pure and simple… the colors, the different weights in yarn and fabric. In the winter they can be make that drafty room chill less.
|4| Vintage shops offer some great variety in all areas and at all price points. Maybe GrandMama and her generation were onto something with their scarf collections and the parade of design and novelty prints; art for your bod! So many from which to choose, from abstracts to poodles.

Don’t. Fear. The. Scarf. Not any more. Try one as you would a necklace; put it on and see how it enchants, plays with the light and ‘moves’.

A scarf is truly one of the most affordable, jauntiest accessory you can get even if all you do it tie it on the strap of your purse. Till others get wind of this, you’ll stand out.  ;)

"Reinvent new combinations of what you already own. Improvise. Become more creative. Not because you have to, but because you want to. Evolution is the secret for the next step.”
-Karl Lagerfeld

Ditch the Clutter & Dress for Success

DITCH THE CLUTTER & DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Magazine: Issue #27

Without clothes or even a smile, we embark on our journey. Yet most of us in the Western world end it with an vast collection of stuff, most of which utterly unnecessary for day-to day survival. It’s incredible considering we start out needing so little beyond food and someone looking out for us. But the needs arise. Diapers. Pajamas. Blanket. Crib. More diapers. Something in which to store the pajamas, the blanket too. Soon we begin smiling… now there’s the need for toys. And more toys. Special toys to comfort us when we cry or to help us fall asleep. Suddenly there are so many toys we need shelves and boxes in which to keep them.

From nothing to a room of stuff, it happens so quickly.

Then we discover how certain objects make us feel and, in turn, “fill” our hearts. A stuffed bear becomes a bff. The dress we wear makes us feel beautiful, special and all grown up. The simplest trinket given to us by a grandparent makes us feel loved and close to them. These things plant a seed; we need things to feel things.

Some of us are as able to acquire as to relinquish. Others become hoarders. Then there’s everyone in between. Wherever we are on the spectrum, there’s some value placed on the things we own AND the (in)ability to unravel the need to keep them around. With a little conscious thinking, we can all enjoy nice things yet not being enslaved by them or, with time, their history. “The things you own end of owning you.” Remember that from Fight Club?  We don’t want that. We want to enjoy our things like the treasures they are meant to be.

If you must keep that set of crystal goblets around - you know, the ones you inherited that sit unused in a box? - start using them, for Snoopy’s sake. ENJOY them! Are you not worth a couple sips of tap water from fine Waterford crystal? You are. Of course, if you really hate those goblets, sell them and use the money to get the kind of glasses you adore.

A jewelry box filled with your beloved Aunt Mabel’s brooches and clip on earrings. Not exactly your style but you’ve dragged it around since college because that great lady was something else. How ‘bout you once in a while take out a piece and wear it? Someone compliments you on it, there’s your chance to say, “Why thank you. It was my dear auntie’s…,” and to share a sweet memory. For a moment the great lady’s still alive and vibrant. That’s worth the price of a ton of cocktail rings and big brooches, isn’t it?

“50

It’s not junior year and the 80s prom dress that’s still in your closet doesn’t look the same on you. Make peace with that and give yourself some credit for doing a lot of great living since high school. Now. Quick. Shepherd the dress out of your closet and into the give-away bag. There’s bound to be a niece who’d love it or a charity thrift store who’ll do good things from its sale. And there’s a better dress for that great dame you’ve become.

A box of letters from the one who got away might make you smile but if they don’t, why are they in your possession? Time to shred or burn them. Or maybe, before you do that, use them as inspiration for that short story, one person show, blog entry, song or poem. Emotional upcycling. It’s cleansing.

  • Donate
  • Give away
  • Sell
  • Toss
  • Let someone who loves it more be its archivist and keeper

All are options. Tell that to the closets, homes, sheds and garages full of stuff. Give ‘em all you got:

I have loved this and I have [used, appreciated, loved, enjoyed] it but it’s now time to let someone else [use, appreciate, love, enjoy] it or [toss, shred, upcycle].

It’s just stuff and learning to detach from it isn’t saying that we can’t or didn’t love it but that we need more room to breath life into our future growth and passions.

“You can’t have everything. Where would you put it?” — Steven Wright
