If you’re like most people, then you love amazing food! If you’re like some people then you love cooking good food. If you’re like a small amount of people, you have the unique skill and flair to cook really well -- enough for your friends and family to say things like, “Girl, you should sell these/this!” Perhaps you should be selling your famous grandmother’s cake recipe. You might be able to make a little extra money and even turn it into something more, but is it really worth it?

Here are a few things to consider before you take the Food Business plunge:

#1 Costs

Is it going to be profitable! How do you allocate for all the costs that go into making/baking/cooking/cleaning, etc.?

#2 Is it unique?

People are searching for something different and delicious!

#3 Is it something people want?

Your friends and family are one thing - bias. Test it out gently with total strangers!

#4 What’s the story?

Facts tell, stories sell! People connect with products because of the amazing stories behind them.

#5 Labor Intensive

Food prep takes a lot of time on your feet and is “back breaking” work. Consider the change of pace from what you’re currently doing.

#6 Cottage Laws

Is it best to use these laws as a first step?

Amazing food-preneuer opportunities could add to your household, or allow you to leave your full-time job. There’s always room for something new! Local Craft Food Products are in demand as the shift to eating local is encouraged from every platform. It encourages stimulation in local economy and introduces community building. If you have a Craft Food Product that you’d like to develop or scale up, there’s no better time than now!

It might be your time to get in the kitchen and get cooking!

The 5 People Ruining Your Business

THE 5 PEOPLE RUINING
YOUR BUSINESS

Magazine: Issue #14

We talk so often about the type of people you should be looking for to help nurture, grow, and expand your company. These are key players who’s advice is golden, and time is valuable. Often times they are the people you wish you could pay — because often they won’t accept it or you feel like what they are charging you is less than you should be paying! Valuable, positive, and encouraging people are the right people to attract to your business.

However, sometimes, we get a good word, piece of advice, honest critique, or powerful push to move out and it’s quickly taken from you.

Negative Nancy is what I call them. Maybe you’ve referred to them as Debbie Downer. You know the person that will suck all the life out of a room? That will throw a wet blanket on your emerging bon fire? Well, it’s time to do some house cleaning and distance yourself from or move away from these five types of people (whether they are family or not!):

1| Not Accomplished

The person who knows everything but has accomplished nothing! The person who’s been there, done it, and it never worked for them. Never able to have a successful business of any kind, but has all the advice in the world for how to make your business grow and become successful

2| Poor Man Mentality

You know the person who complains about the expense of everything, and is always claiming broke!

3| The Criticizer

Where there is nothing wrong with some one critiquing your business, because we always need an outsiders p.o.v., I often think the best criticism comes with solution. So, if they are quick to offer their two cents with out the possible remedy to the problem, they could just be natural complainers, whiners, and people who only see the bad in EVERYTHING — including your gutsiness to step out and make something happen!

4| The Partaker

There was an old nursery school story about the hen who asked everyone to help her make bread. Everyone was too busy to help her stir, pour, sift, etc. Yet, when it came time to partake in the fruits of her labor (the end product of amazing baked bread), everyone who declined to help, had their hand out for a piece!

5| The Slick Talker

Ever had an encounter with someone who promises you they can give you the moon? You pay their fee with high hopes, because you clearly laid out your expectations, which they signed off on, and yet they still failed to deliver!

All in all, we need the right people attracted to our business. How do you attract the right people? Glad you asked… look for the next installment next month!

5 SIMPLE WAYS TO GETTING BACK ON TRACK

Article by Marlo Wright

Often in business, and as the owner of the business, there are times -- those dark times we’d rather never speak about. Times that creep upon us during the quiet of the afternoon when no one else is around. Some thing wisps its way towards us and starts up meaningless and fearful conversations.

“Is this really working?” it asks, then all of a sudden fear has consumed everything about us, from the top of our heads to the bottom of our feet. It’s fight time! It’s time to pull out the big guns and swiftly kick ourselves in the pants --snap out of it.

Of course it is working! There are employees, customers, and fans! So then why does that feeling come? Why does it seem real? Often times, our emotions are under attack, and our responsibility becomes self-preservation. Most of the time it’s a chance to learn something new.

Perhaps the feeling is coming because though you’ve had success at one level, a new level is in transition. The ground beneath doesn’t seem as sure as it once did. It is something that was desired [growth], but once the tectonic plates beneath start shifting, the jolts and sways of uncertainty can become overwhelming.

Here are five helpful resources towards getting you back in a more stabilized state of mind and back on track:

1.    Recognize what’s going on around you.

Don’t take anything on as personal during this time. The worst thing is to take on something that doesn’t belong to you and waste precious time and energy.

2.    Be careful what you ingest.

Garbage in, Garbage out is imperative at this time. Your mouth can be your greatest enemy if it comes into agreement with what fear is trying to convince you of.

3.    Talk to the right people.

Sharing your business, personal or business, can be detrimental if shared with the wrong people. The last thing you need are naysayers polluting  your space.

4.    Learn the lesson.

In every great struggle there’s and equally great revelation to learn from. Don’t be so caught up in the mechanics of what is going on that you don’t pay attention to the how to overcome it.

5.    Dig in deep.

Ultimately, no matter if you have your own cheerleading squad behind you every step of the way, they can’t do it for you. You have to dig deep within to win. You have to fight. You have to change your attitude and come out winning.

Emotions are like waves, they will toss you to and fro if you allow them. You are a fighter, otherwise you wouldn’t be in business in the first place! You would have been content with a comfy, cushy job behind a desk, clocking in and out daily for someone else. It’s time to kick yourself in the pants because at the end of the day YOU CAN DO IT! You keep doing it, until you reach your goals!

Then you’re crazy enough to reach those, and set new ones! You are amazing and one of a kind! the world needs you to flourish!

Is Outsourcing the Best Option for Your Company?

IS OUTSOURCING THE BEST OPTION FOR YOUR COMPANY?

Outsourcing for Your Company

Outsourcing for Your Company

With so many available outsourcing options for the busy entrepreneur at so many different price levels, the challenge is finding the right person for your team.

An outsourced member of your team, is still a team member. It is YOUR responsibility to check behind, followup with and stay in constant contact with the team member, even if overseas. Just as any other employee in your office, people unfortunately have the tendency to skate around the corners and not do things quite exactly as you would. This is the challenging part. Too many cut corners can equal low quality in your produced outcome. This could mean bad business and your customers level of expectations are not being met.

The saying is, trust, but verify. Trust what employees tell you they’re doing— Verify every step of the way. In the early stages, especially, this is critical to your public image and company foundation. Misleading, poor quality, or deficient customer service can hurt your business before it takes off, and damages could potentially be irreversible.

There are several outsourcing sites/companies from music, to commercials, to personal assistants, varying in prices and features from which to choose. Remember, you get what you pay for, and though choosing the least expensive option seems to make sense as you count every penny, it may not yield the best return on your investment. Every dollar, even if it's five dollars is important and should be spent wisely!

Do you need the help? Often times, we are told that we should get rid of the tasks that are “not worth your time”, but, if you’re having to redo those tasks, you've now wasted time, money and energy. Ultimately the frustration from the situation can spiral you into a negative space that in turn wastes more time.

Patience. The right outsourcing opportunity will come at the right time.

Here are 5 ways to make sure you’re making the best outsourcing decisions for your emerging company:

1| Is it necessary? Doing what we have to do vs what we want to do can impair our better judgement. As the owner of the company, it’s your job to know a little about each position before delegating. Therefore, spend some time actually doing the assignment before giving it to someone else. That way, you’ll have a working knowledge of how it should work.

The Club

2| What are my sourcing options? Do the research. Ask for referrals. Check references.

3| How much help can I afford? Never give cart blanche assignments. Rather give in small hourly increments. Write it in your budget.

4| How long will I need help? Is this an unlimited time frame or a specific project you'll need help with?

5| What specific duties will they accomplish? Create a specific job description, though it can be tailored as your needs change.

Ultimately outsourcing means your business is growing, or showing signs of growth. As stressful as it can be, you have to exercise patience and positive thinking to get you through. You won’t know it all, and you’ll learn a lot that will make your business grow all the more.

Pitch Your Next Big Idea in 30 Seconds or Less

PITCH YOUR NEXT BIG IDEA IN 30 SECONDS OR LESS

Magazine: Issue #22

Captivate in 30 Seconds or Less

Captivate in 30 Seconds or Less

A 30 second elevator pitch is a brief introduction about you and your business. It should make people want to know more about your services/products.

It's not about promotion… but it is! There's a way to promote what you're doing without appearing as such. People will forget the first thing you said if you say too much.

Struggling to stay within in 30seconds means you haven't put much thought on how to be concise in talking about your business. Business is short sound bites that attract attention.

Once you've considered all these things, and developed your pitch it's time to PRACTICE!!!!! Time yourself. Practice in the mirror, with expression, inflection in your voice, and gestures you make.

{ If there are multiple things you do, sometimes it can make you sound flighty -- not that there are many people doing multiple things i.e. Richard Branson, but it’s best to use terms like conglomerate, corporation, company etc to talk about the depth of what you do.}

It's for sure not the time to promote events you have going on.

Imagine if you bumped into a potential investor, and just before you got on the elevator they asked what you do… but are on their way to a meeting. What would you say?

“50

Could you captivate them so when the doors open, they hand you a card and say, I want to hear more, call my assistant. Setup a meeting!

Confidence or lack there of, can make or break your business. I recommend a toastmasters group. A lot of people talk to be talking. I learned a lot about concise speaking when I was on the circuit for radio interviews for one of my books. There’s no time to belabor points.

{When I interviewed for the Michael Baisden radio show - a once nationally syndicated radio show, my interview was 2min 30seconds! Could you have done it???}

Are you able to articulate what you do? Or do you just use a bunch of filler words?? We use twice as many words as men. Think about speaking to a man, get to the point. The more you practice, the easier it will come.

Speaking intelligibly about your business is nothing more than knowing what you know. Getting to the point of what you know. And allowing others to hear about what you know. A mini showcase.

Next time the spot light is on you, will you look polished? Or uncertain about your own business? If you're uncertain about your business, then why would I want to do business with you?

Turning Mistake Into Profit!

Turning Mistake Into Profit!

Why is it some people seem unaffected and others just can’t get good footing in business? Here are Five Small Secrets to help you move beyond the insurmountable events giving your profit friction!

5| Admission - Admitting a mistake is HUGE in moving forward and finding the solution! I think we all know someone who’s too cowardly to stand up and take the blame — then shake our head in embarrassment for them. A profit making, business person can accept responsibility.

4| Negative Talk! - When you’ve discovered the mistake, don’t beat yourself up too long about it! What good does it do but keep you in a negative space? Change your speech to “I made this mistake. I accept responsibility. Now I embrace the correction needed to move forward. The right thoughts are coming to me. I have what I need to move past this mistake.”

3| Act Accordingly! - Once your mouth is in alignment, the body will follow. Actions necessary to correct the mistake will start to happen and you will see results! Remember, sometimes the mistake is a small dingy and other times it’s the size of the Titanic — It’s important to BE PATIENT with yourself during the process and the process itself.

2| Be Thankful - It (the mistake) could have slipped passed you entirely, but at whatever point you caught it, you did! Now, it’s time to unleash your praise and thanks for catching it when you did! Releasing this positive energy into the atmosphere will come back to you! You will attract positivity to continue moving forward!

1| Do Your Best! Your best is all you need. But doing your best means being honest with yourself! Are you really giving this your all? How can you give more? What specifically should be done?

“Holistic

Remember, no one is perfect, but we can maintain a high level of integrity and standards for ourselves in which we decide to operate.

Mistakes are the same as college experience — something you have to pay for and that’s invaluable to your long term success! When you make a mistake, whether it’s an oopsy, boo-boo, or a full fledge “IT hit the fan” the best part is the worst part is generally over. It is also an indicator you discovered a way of NOT doing something and in that philosophy you are in the company of some pretty brilliant minds.

Do the research and search the internet for Business Owner failures. You’ll quickly discover the flubs, many great businessmen and women have made and the most important part — Their Comeback!
