How to Negotiate Like a Pro a Vintage Dealer

HOW TO NEGOTIATE LIKE A PRO VINTAGE DEALER

Authored By: Cinthia Singleton

Vintage.  You want the energy and uniqueness that comes with it. Tons of great stuff out there, from clothing to home decor.  Flea markets.  eBay.  Etsy.  Rubylane. Lots of options.

And let’s face it, the quest for the perfect vintage dress, screen print or hand mirror is especially FUN for those who love the hunt.  But more and more bargain hunters are hitting the vintage venues for DEALS.  Never hurts to ask, right?  Certainly not.  Just remember that it’s all in HOW you do.

Here are some tips to help you enter the negotiating process confidently and as respectively as possible:

1) There is no one universal shop policy.  They - be it a flea market vendor or Etsy seller - vary from shop to shop; they are crafted based upon personal parameters.

2) Many dealers DO factor in a % of wiggle room amount for price bargaining.

3) Don’t treat negotiating a deal as if it’s haggling but rather a friendly discussion.

4) The asking price is a springboard point of discussion.  Sure, talks could go into the NO zone or you don’t hear the sweet spot number you’d like but start with the asking price and work from there not 70% of it.

I love this [ brooch, hat, table, rug, box of comics ]  and was wondering if this is your final price?

The classic “Is this your best price?” or “Can you do better on the pricer?” works too but remember, it’s a dance and with every dance, someone’s got to lead… but elegantly.

4) Offer a counter price (remember the 10% rule) rather than an open-ended request for a discount.  Remember.:  friendly discussion.   An open-ended request for a discount can come off as a demand.

5) The discount vendors can give depends on many factors.  Maybe they have money in restoring or cleaning that dress.  Perhaps the estate jewelry is consigned and must be sold at a contractual price set by its owner and the shop.  Whatever the reason, don’t badger, cajole, taunt or berate.  Respect the space, continue to look around.  Often this gives the vendor a little time to reconsider the offer or counter with an alternative course of action such as, for example, layaway.

6) If you hear, “I’m sorry but our prices are firm,” it’s bad form to press hard.  It is, though, appropriate to extend calling card and say, “Well, if you [ change your mind, have a sale, carry one that is priced in my price range, etc ], please contact me.”  This technique has worked more times than you know; again, as in 5), the vendor has time to re-consider, review month-end sales figures or discuss the offer with a consignor.  You just never know.

7) There are sometimes better times to ask for a discount.  Say, if you’re at the flea market, approach with an offer at the end of the day when they’re packing up.  One less thing to pack could possibly become yours to tote away. ;  )

But remember, the average vintage seller IS the owner of a small business.  They put a lot of time into their shop and inventory and profit margins are generally small.  A little, no a LOT, of kindness goes a long way.  Compliment their store windows, the time put into displays.  If they’re online, a little pat on the back for great photography is appreciated.  Don’t just lunge with a request for a slamming deal.  These are people who put their heart and soul into their work and they take it very personally.  That said…

1) Don’t ask for a better price on items $20 and less.
2) Don’t clamor for the deal so much you insult a piece in the process.  It’s vintage and as such there might have a ding or spot.  Picking it apart to get a better prices comes off as rude and puts a dealer on the defensive.  Just ask if you can get a better price or make an offer.
3) The more, the merrier.  The more you purchase, perhaps the more a dealer will be willing to work with you.  Turnover speaks volumes.
4) Cash talks; no fees = sweet fast deals.
5) Don’t try to price match.  This is a small operation. It is NOT Best Buy.
6) Don’t bring up the other vintage shop’s prices.  Bad form. Best you shop there instead.
7) So you paid $___ the hippie boots in 1969 and feel they should be nearer that price.  The shop’s bills are being paid with 2016 currency.

Just remember that it’s all in HOW you ask and when shopping for vintage, you are, unlike in the department or box stores, getting a shopping adventure that includes a real person who sourced with love.  For those who love the journey, shopping vintage is YOUR kind of adventure.
Be polite, always be nice.  Make sugar your favorite spice. (from the Looney Tunes Show)

Why You Need a Will

Why You Need a Will

Why You Need a Will

WHY YOU NEED A WILL

Article by Cinthia Singleton

Magazine: Issue #41

Write a will.

You think it doesn’t matter, but it does to those you leave behind. Kin, neighbors and/or friends will be left to sift through the rubble, symbolic or real. If you’ve not said who should get what and what they should do with it, the State will step in, sure, but who wants that, it all possibly sitting in probate where it can’t help a soul?

Write a will.

An attorney has been trained to read the game board box. They know the laws of the land and the legal language required by it ESPECIALLY IF THE ESTATE IS A COMPLICATED ONE. There are also templates online one can use to draft a will.  A lawyer would recommend you go through the template, input the information, then bring that to them but many a person has made their wishes known with only a pen, legal pad and notary public. Either way…

Wirte a will.

A will covers many things including:

1 :: Who will be your executor, the person who will carry out your instructions? This can be anyone from a spouse to a capable friend but who will be the most trustworthy and respectful throughout this tough job?

2 :: Who are your heirs, the people who would inherit your assets and possessions? If this isn’t clear, the options might be:  the state, a blood relative you haven’t seen in decades, a charity that doesn’t really resonate you as much as another, the dumpster.

3 :: Are there special instructions you’d like followed? Sis gets the bone china. BFF gets all your Manolo Blahniks. You want your alma mater to receive a little something for the scholarship fund.  Do you prefer a partner get the summer house rather than your blood family?

4 :: If there are minor or dependent children, who will be their guardians? The court will appoint one if you do not. Just remember to have the conversation with this person first. Same goes for those pets. The neighbor who’s the macaw’s bestie may have joked joked repeatedly, “If anything ever happens to you…” but make sure they’re on deck for such a responsibility. lol

5 :: Where do possessions and assets go (the money, IRAs, jewelry, property, car, the artwork, the business etc.)? First assess what you have and make a list with account #s.

6 :: End of life decisions are important to cover as well. Who will have Power of Attorney to speak for you when you cannot? Some want to donate their organs to science. Many do not want to be resuscitated. There are burial plan options to decide upon. Put pen to page and…

Write a will.

The hardest part is thinking about it. It seems to many to be saying, “I quit, Universe. Take me now.” That’s not the case.  Nothing bad will happen just because a last will and testament sits in the top drawer of your desk. It’s a legal tool to enable YOU to give power to those you feel can handle it. One of the greatest gifts one can give another, besides love, is the time it takes to liquidate the estate, keep the secrets and tell the stories; help them by laying out your wishes.

Write a will. Write a will. Write a will.

Then live like there’s no tomorrow.  : )

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.— Benjamin Franklin

The Handwritten Note is Making a Comeback

STOP & SAY THANK YOU:
THE HANDWRITTEN NOTE IS
MAKING A COMEBACK

The Handwritten Thank You Note Is Still Huge

The Handwritten Thank You Note Is Still Huge

Article by Cinthia Singleton

Magazine: Issue #39

911, We are losing the art of giving thanks! Sure, we constantly post on Facebook our gratitude for everything from a sunset to a pretty cafe lunch, and yes, we thank our friends, fans and followers there too for the birthday wishes, condolences, prayers, etc. But what is happening to the simple handwritten thank YOU note? 911! It’s going to go the way of the buggy whip if we don’t fight for it!! It used to be that if someone did something nice for us or made/gave us something, even if we didn’t love it (or even like it sometimes), we sat down and wrote one. It’s what the well-heeled wolves taught their cubs from a young age: it’s good manners to acknowledge the exchange of energy with appreciation in the form of a handwritten note.

Example: Birthday party. Gifts given. Fun was had by all. That next day the thank you cards were to be written and dispatched. Seemed like a chore, but really it was a simple formula:

Dear Party Guest,
Thank you for coming to my birthday party. I had fun with you. Thank you also for the nice dolly, t-shirt, book, etc. you gave me. It will be fun to play with, wear, read, etc.
Your friend,
Birthday Boy/Girl

The dolly, t shirt, book, etc. was incidental really. Giftee didn’t need to review or critique that dolly, t shirt, book, etc., just take a moment to say thank YOU. In doing so, Gifter was shown how appreciated the gift of their time and thoughtfulness. After all, this person stepped outside themselves to show that they cared.

Somewhere along the way though, we started moving too fast and getting too technologically advanced. It became acceptable to text a 'Thanks you', or send a funny meme. The thank you note is starting to seem like an old-fashioned, inefficient hassle in the one-click world. Write a single note to that Gifter or post ‘gratitude’ to one’s 500+ friends on Facebook for receiving a gift? Many will choose the latter over the former, but that olde tyme style still melts hearts.

As the recipient of a thank you note, we:
hold that note
feel the paper
read the words
see the handwriting and feel the energy behind it
connect with someone who appreciates us

How to start:

1| Keep blank notecards or stationary around just for this purpose. There's such a vast and beautiful selection out there now.
2| Within the week you are given a gift, get the stationary out and write a simple note.
3| Unsure how to compose a thank you note? There are some great examples to be found on the interwebs but simple is best: 'Thank you so much for feeding my goldfish Sparky while I was out of town. I so appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to make sure he was happy and cared for. You’re the best!'
4| Handwrite this this note. No typing. No computer. No email. No text. Go slow if handwriting ain’t your bag, or print, but let the human touch come forward.

When the thank you note goes, a special societal tenderness is not far behind it. We’re seeing it already, every Friday night when Jimmy Fallon writes his thank you notes. Yes, it’s a skit meant to be funny, but the ‘notes’ he writes snark and are critical. They point a finger at something and put it under the examination lamp. Hardly a “thank you”, more like a “thank me for being so clever and funny.” 911. Stop. Step back. A thank you is a thank YOU.

As John F. Kennedy said, “We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.” So right! The moment we give of ourselves when we get is intimate. It’s quiet. It’s not time to bestow an award, nor give out report card. The hand-written thank you note is a personal document of what we treasure and hold dear; you. And when these hand-written thank you notes are gone, so is a bit of our society’s sweet soul. That is what connects us with others, not the emojis. Without it, we lose intimacy and our heart’s eye contact.

"Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom."
— Marcel Proust
