Stop Making These 5 Excuses! Grow Your Design Business Today

Stop Making These 5 Excuses! Grow Your Design Business Today

I have two questions for you... Are you trapped in all the reasons NOT to start that dream design business? Are you still swimming in uncertainty splashing around in the kiddie pool of imagination because its 'safe’?

You know you really want to unleash your design voice! So why not STOP making these 5 excuses and dive off the high-dive into the ocean of success!? Get inspired to move past your blocks so you can grow your design business today.

1 :: I Don't Have Enough Money

Who does? You could sit in this false mindset all day, every day. This is the most costly mistake holding you back.
By saying “I don’t have enough” is an example of the “lack” mentality holding you back from attracting abundance and the design career that you are meant to create. You’re simply denying yourself of a higher possibility—a soul goal.
There is an ancient business idea that all start up businesses need ’funding’. Frankly, this is old-school and limiting to your success. There are 101 ways you can open the doors to your new design studio! Here are some things to consider to determine if you are ready to move past ‘not enough’:
        |Are you resourceful? Who do you know and how can you cut corners in the beginning?
        |Are your sights set TOO high? Think about if you have a tangible plan. Is jumping strait to the idea of having a fully staffed, design firm with 100k+ clients really feasible?
        |If you say you REALLY want to do this, plan smart and work hard!

2 :: I Don't Have Enough Time

If you have your clear vision but the excuse of time is holding you back, you’re not alone. I struggled with this mindset before opening my wellness studio. Being a mother, fine artist and teaching yoga full time had me strapped, I thought there was no way in hell I could do start a successful wellness studio but I found the time because I was on a mission and passionate. Maybe..
You are in the corporate world and feel exhausted at the thought of launching a new business on the side. Or maybe you have children and feel “the timing not right” so “I’ll wait it out”. Whatever your current reason, remember we live in an age of “quick and easy”.
        |Within minutes you could have a website up and a pay button added to your site through a Stripe account or PayPal.  (This, by no means, means that you’re completely legit as a business entity and there are till details to be ironed out but this is a start!)
        |Get selfish with your time and find hidden pockets in your day you can commit to growing that brilliant design studio.  Get off Netflix and wake up 2 hours earlier… BOOM! You’ve got a bonafide part-time gig going!

3 :: I Don't Know How To Build A Successful, Lucrative Business Plan

Your business plan should evolve and change over time. Entrepreneurs are always finding creative ways to improve and be malleable in order to find success. A formal business plan is time consuming. While it is important to have clear vision and growth strategies, laying out any and all ‘what ifs’ can be depressing!
Is a business plan important? You bet your bottom! But if you’re using this as an excuse to not move forward, STOP! If you are looking for clarity and momentum, this ends up being the fun and exciting part my clients love and it can be done in as little as half a day. (CTA—call me).

4 :: I Wasn't Trained At The Best School So I Can't Start A Freelance Design Biz

I don't have enough credibility to draw in high paying clients. I’ll be seen as a fraud. Clients only hire designers with years of experience. STOP! I want you to take a long deep breath right now….
You are the owner of your own design destiny! Don’t fall into the trap of feeling that you’d have to suffer INTO your new solo career. If you believe in what you do, you’re passionate, open, skillful in your art, respectful and professional you will be seen as an expert worthy of being hired.

I have to confess, I had these limiting beliefs about myself even when my career was taking off. As you grow, so will your client base. While it’s ok to have dreams of climbing to the top in one step. Stay grounded and focused on your current capabilities, do quality work and keep manifesting your design dreams.
You will be tempted to make excuses because you are a visionary taking exciting risks.

Return to the feelings of positive possibility and your big ‘WHY’. You will be opening the doors to your new design business soon!

8 Ways to Leave An Impression

8 Ways to Leave An Impression

8 Ways to Leave An Impression

The quick impression we leave behind, intentionally or unintentionally, helps those around us form an opinion.  Perhaps they only get the glimmer of us when they meet us, a shell of who we are, but it is life.  We're such animals sometimes, aren't we?  So why not have a hand in creating the illusion yourself?

Not that one has to put themselves out there with all the vengeance of a Hallow’s Eve reveler - though that IS a way people DO create illusion once a year - but we all can be a little more conscious of the subtleties we project to the world each day.

1| Use those eyes.

Make eye contact even if all you’re doing is getting directions.

2| Find yourself complaining about a “tragic waistline” or “shapeless arms?”

Play up the other parts of you that are the treasures.  Those amazing hands? Get a manicure.  Long neck? Statement necklace or a long strand of pearls.

3| Dress as if you are going somewhere.

No old bras. No socks with holes. Doesn’t matter if no one will see that item or whether you’re just running to the store (which is as much somewhere as anywhere), you are just trudging along. You are vibrant and alive. You are, aren't you? Energetically, think of it this way... no one gets on the train that's just sitting in the station but the one that's roaring and warming up.

4| Walk as if you are going somewhere with someone fabulous on your arm - You!

Remember early on in Saturday Night Fever when Tony Manero walks down an otherwise busy Brooklyn street with his can of paint?  With every step hitting the pavement, he is IT and he is already THERE.

5| Don't wait for an occasion.

Wear something that makes you feel fabulous; "BE" the occasion just by wearing it.

6| Speak from the heart.

7| Listen.

8| Observe in other people what simple qualities you LIKE about them.

Positivity and openness for others is a good vibe to nurture.

We use the senses to get our bearings amongst the animals in the kingdom. At best, it is a healthy defense mechanism. At worst, it’s profiling or pigeonholing. But it’s always a single color or line… try giving those you meet some of the beautiful, rich grays.

As John Waters says,

Who cares what you think when I entered the room. I only care about what you think about when I leave.

Of course he was talking about why he liked wearing plaid suits. Be the plaid!  lol

A Reiki Masters take on Style {A Man's Version}

A Reiki Masters Take On Style

A Reiki Masters Take On Style

While sitting and meditating upon how I’m going to pull off writing on this subject of Reiki and its relationship to fashion and style, my first thoughts were “maybe I should skip this one.” But not wanting to be defeated by my own fears, and quite frankly a lack of knowledge in regards to fashion, I meditated a bit longer and it did come to me that I have learned through being a Reiki Master/Teacher, that “everything is energy.” Once in tune with this statement, I for the first time ever visualized fashion as energy. This allowed me to discover my style while either teaching or just providing Reiki sessions to clients. Looking back at almost every instance during these events, I have almost always remained in the same realm of dress, a neat, professional, soft, earthy colored, low key and comfortable series of clothing always with greens, blues, and browns. Knowing now that at the time of these events, I was not choosing my clothing, the universal life force energy was choosing them for me.

I’ve already learned by myself that being comfortable as a practitioner is of the utmost priority; you want to be able to move around a Reiki table without restriction. But I did never in fact pay attention to colors as I would always go with the flow of what was available at my reach in the closet or did I? The energy within me seems to always go for earthy comfortable colors, even without thought.

Some of my favorite colors and some of their effects:

Green :: BALANCE, LOVE, SELF CONTROL

Helps relax muscles, nerves, and thoughts. Cleanses and balances our energy, to give a feeling of renewal, peace and harmony. Green connects us to unconditional love and is used for balancing our whole being.

Blue :: KNOWLEDGE, HEALTH, DECISIVENESS

This is a mentally-relaxing color. Blue has a pacifying effect on the nervous system and brings great relaxation. Ideal for sleep problems. Connects us to holistic thought, and gives us wisdom and clarity enhancing communication and speech.

Indigo :: INTUITION, MYSTICISM, UNDERSTANDING

The indigo energy connects us to our unconscious self, and gives us the experience of being part of the whole universe. Strengthens intuition, imagination, psychic powers.

Brown :: PHYSICAL COMFORT, SIMPLICITY

Brown is friendly and approachable. It is loyal, trustworthy and dependable in a practical and realistic way. In color psychology, brown is honest, genuine and sincere. It relates to the hardworking, the industrious and reliable, with both feet planted firmly on the ground. It is sensual, sensitive and warm, engulfing one in a feeling of calmness and comfort.
So without actually thinking about purchasing or wearing these colors consistently during Reiki work, the universe has chosen for me the necessary colors that will compliment and not hinder a transfer of healing energy.

Creative Edge: How to Be Your Own Muse

CREATIVE EDGE: HOW TO BE YOUR OWN MUSE

Article by Cinthia Singleton
Photo Credit: Dasha & Mari
Magazine: Issue #30

The relationship between the artist and their muse gives us a buzz. F. Scott and Zelda. John and Yoko. Andy and Edie. One magical being for each artiste and, BAM, a meaningful tie to our own work as never existed before in the solitary garret. Sign you up, creative one? Well, why not? Who doesn’t want a tangible connection to their process? Of course with all that sizzle what you’re working on will be great and there’ll be the exhibition or book deal, whatever. Energy, traction… MOMENTUM. Ah, the muse. They seem to give us a voice, know how to carry us to the finish line, the whole while wiping away the tears, applying salves and loving us. A muse doesn’t necessarily have to be a lover, but someone who demands, and gets, the keys to our artistic soul in exchange for a map to our greatness.

Don’t believe the hype.

Creativity is a lot of work and all it promises is that and lots of personal fulfillment if you hang in there. Problem is, it can be one darn lonely process full of [waiting, pondering, procrastinating, hoping and praying for signs] and many of us find that we CAN’T do it simply, or simply can’t [concentrate, think, move forward, enjoy the process warts and all]. This is why we want to find a muse. They make a tough mountain easier, safer to scale.

The reality is not all of us will have a magical muse in our creative lives. In fact, gifts aren’t meant to miraculously emerge from behind the barriers but are mined from within. A muse, if there is one, is, like a lot of things in life, a PART of the plan; creative people are meant to encounter a SERIES of people and experiences to guide them; creativity is about a life of living and our creativity is a life force that contributes to it. How deeply or intimately, depends on timing, how open we are, what we need to learn at a particular point in time. They come to us in the form of a new friend who reads that first chapter, a new technique we learn or a book we read. They are the people who might listen for a moment or say something that illuminates a left turn over a right. Places we visit open us up to new experiences. These possibilities are infinite. We let them in. 'Till they do, stick with the boring part of the plan:

1 :: Stop talking about it and do it
2 :: Stay in the [ chair, room, studio ] for a set amount of time every day
3 :: Learn to enjoy 99% of the process, steps large and small
4 :: Be forgiving when 1% of the process hurts
5 :: Believe something good comes from each day, ‘bad’ or ‘good’
6 :: Maintain composure while struggling with new ideas
7 :: Learn the tricks that will enable you to ‘work around’ particular process bug-a-boos
8 :: Work daily

If you need more than this, it’s ego and there’s no place for that in the process unless you want to quit. 8 steps. You, yourself and you are the ore being mined. It’s GOLD not fool’s. So stop looking for the muse. They might SEEM like the most amazing gift personified but it’s really YOU and that’s already in you.

“The gold in life is for those bold and brave in life.”

The 3 Essential Components of Inspiration

The 3 Essential Components Of Inspiration

The 3 Essential Components Of Inspiration

THE 3 ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF INSPIRATION

Article by Sophie Mihalko
Photo Credit: Dasha & Mari
Magazine: Issue #30

In her 2009 TED Talk's, Elisabeth Gilbert describes how inspiration is often something outside of ourselves that we somehow need to invite in.

We often get our best ideas in the shower, while driving a car, or even washing dishes, which is very frustrating since we don’t have anything to record or write with.

So, let’s use the example of the shower and investigate what the conditions are that allows inspiration to strike so often!

1 :: We are not thinking
Most of us know how to take a shower, drive a car, and do the dishes without thinking about it. NO THINKING allows inspiration to come faster than if we are. Why? It’s simple- A thought is the repetition of something we know or have experienced. Inspiration is something that does not exist yet, so it just cannot be in the same environment as a repetition of something that already exists.

Meditation or Access The Bars® are a great way to have a blank mind. Find your way to clear your thoughts.

2 :: We are relaxed
The hot water, the repetitive movements, the condition of the shower itself is relaxing. When the body does not make strenuous movements (but still moves), inspiration is much more likely to strike. We are now in full mode of “receiving”, like a blank slate. The body is open to the information. Ruth Stone, the famous American poet often described how she felt poems “passing” through her body.

Taking a walk in nature, stretching, receiving a massage, or eating the foods that nurture our bodies are perfect ways to relax as well.

3 :: We are not judging ourselves or others
Usually we do not judge ourselves for the way we take a shower. We also do not judge the shower. In this space of non-judgement, where nothing is wrong, bad, big or small, inspiration can come. It will find a fertile ground where a seed can be planted without the risk to be modified or pushed away.

Judging ourselves not only creates stress, but it also prevents our creativity to blossom. Therefore, even if you are your “worst critic”, adopting a technique to stop self-judgement as soon as it is noticed is critical in developing new ideas.

If you apply these three components and recreate them at any time, you will eventually be able to get inspired any time you choose to be.
