Why "Being Busy" is Hurting Your Business and Your Finances

WHY "BEING BUSY" IS HURTING YOUR BUSINESS AND YOUR FINANCES

Article: Angel Quintana       Photo: Carley Page Summers      Issue#37

busy-work.jpg

Let’s face it, we’re all busy. We all have a zillion things to accomplish on any given day and most days we aren’t even able to complete that long list of to-do's. It can feel brutal at times. After all, we are entrepreneurs.

But that has me thinking about systems and processes… have we implemented a structured day planner that accumulates the to-do’s, but also creates organization to the order? Or are we just keeping "it all upstairs", hoping one day the list will be completed?

I’m not going to lie and say we have every i dotted and t crossed here at Holistic Fashionista. It’s a juggling act for sure, but programs like Trello and EmailMeForm, are simple platforms that we do appreciate and use for nearly all our product launches, collection of data, and of course those long days that are packed with a bunch of details.

But, even the most organized person has those days where they just can’t take it anymore. The list is too long and there is too much to do— we want to blame someone else for the madness.

That’s where we have to check ourselves (and our egos) before we piss off those close to us.

The last thing you want to do is piss off your team or snap at your mentor. The bottom line is the chaos is your fault. That’s because you are in charge. You’re the lady boss. You’re the CEO. You’re the one who started this business! Take responsibility.

Here are 3 tips to help you tame the madness and tackle the to-do list, all while increasing your revenue (yup, you heard me!) and get your finances back on track.

You’re busy, but your bank account isn’t showing that the “busy work” is paying off. What gives?

STOP BEING BUSY
Being busy when you’re high on caffeine can be fun from time to time, but being busy just to be busy, well that’s not productive. Most of us find distractions in the most mundane things— anything to keep us from tackling what really needs to be done— you know what I’m talking about:

  • Countless hours on Facebook
  • Staring at your phone like a real Instagram whore
  • Pinning and looking at others' gorgeous boards
  • Reading and writing emails
  • Writing blog posts/articles

So do yourself a favor right now and stop kidding yourself that your "busy-ness" is making you more money-- because if you look closely, it probably isn't! Even if you consider social media and creating content “marketing,” money-making activities, I assure you it’s a passive tactic towards making more money— and it doesn’t usually translate to dollar bills.

Instead, try being assertive in your distractions. If you’re going to hang out on Facebook, ask for the sale (don’t just hit at it). If you’re going to write an article, make sure you do a Facebook boosted post to draw more attention to your business (and don’t forget to include a call-to-action at the end of each post!). Be strategic with all the “busy work”. Deal?

STOP BLAMING YOUR TEAM
Your team is there to support you and if they aren’t holding up their job description, perhaps it’s time to sit them down and have a chat. Put on paper (if you haven’t already) what their duties are and what is required in their position. If you haven’t been clear about what their duties are, how can you expect them to read your mind? You can’t. And that means you can get pissed at them either, because it’s really your fault.

Every week put together a Monday team building meeting and map out what needs to be done to reach your weekly goals. Don’t have weekly goals set in place yet? Map those out weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually. The only way to assure everything gets completed by your team is to have goals and a list of what needs to be accomplished. Keep the communication flowing!

Apps like Trello and sharing Google docs is a great way to keep your team in the loop of what needs to be done, when it needs to be completed by, and who is doing what. Put systems in place so your team can win at their job! And then take them to happy hour to show your appreciation! Gratitude is a great strategy for keeping the family happy and accomplished.

STOP PISSING YOUR MENTOR OFF
Look, we’ve all hired a mentor at one point in our business, but how many times have you blamed your mentor for the lack of success in your business? Come on, be honest. What about those late payments you still haven’t paid and now you’re wasting your time being pissed that she finally cut you off. It’s not her fault, it’s yours.

When you are “busy, being busy” even the most holistic entrepreneur has a tendencies to play the blame game. It’s not cool and actually makes you look nuts. It’s time to start paying a closer attention to details and when I say details, I’m talking about your finances.

Your mentor is there to support you and lift you higher when times get crazy. Mentors deserve a pat on the back from time to time, and when you’re disorganized and not following protocol, you’re clouding your judgement and acting out inauthentically, when you should be implementing more systems into your life to make sure you can complete your assignments, and at the very least, pay your bills/investments on time.

In closing, you’re responsible for the success of your business. Not your team. Not your busy work. And not your mentor.

If you can’t get out of “busy work” and into creating systems to improve your business, you’ll never be successful. In fact, you’ll burn a lot of bridges-- bridges that could have been mended if you took responsiblity for your responsibilities.

Busywork is a trap and if you’re stuck in its spiral staircase, get off right now and take the elevator downstairs and regroup. Put an action plan together to get off the hamster wheel and start creating productivity system with money-making tasks that ask for the sale, instead of just hinting at it.

Time is money and busy work is not time well spent. Don’t waste another hour on tasks that don’t produce real results, the result I'm talk about is MONEY.

Have you always been interested in interior styling or did you begin developing an eye for it later in life?

Since I was a little girl, I would always rearrange my room, creating little sitting areas and vignettes. I have always had a passion to create a place for others to dwell and to feel at peace. Also, my mother has always had an eye for design, which rubbed off on me.

What’s your main method of finding inspiration? When are you most creative?

Inspiration usually comes from my travels and the different cultures I am able to immerse myself into. I remember coming home after a six-month mission trip to Haiti, and wanting a more tribal, colorful vibe. When I am able to purchase a piece for my home, it usually comes from somewhere that tells a story. I am most creative when I am able to tell a story through my styling.

How do you generally connect with people who want your interior designing expertise?

Most people reach out to me through instagram. Most people have an idea of what they want, but need help pulling their vision together, which is where I come in! I try to advise people not to be impulse buyers and to wait until I can have a look and can cast vision together.

With such a large instagram fan base, do you ever interact with your followers or take on the task of restyling their homes?

Yes, all the time. I find is so important to connect with my followers. I generally respond to each person who comments or messages me. I will give an occasional styling tip in a post, which generates a response from some followers wanting more help with the finishing touches on their homes.

What’s your favorite method of shopping for furniture/home decor? (I.E. online, thrift, department, etc.)

I am an avid “craigs-lister” and thriftier. I think it’s important to connect with local vendors as well, in order to help grow and support the people around you. I also love finding new accounts on instagram who sell free trade goods and support a greater casue with their products.

What do you typically take your photos with?

As a photographer, I find it so important to have crisp and clean photos, so I shoot with my Canon 6D for the majority of my photos, but sometimes you have to catch the moment with the good ole’ I-phone.

What one thing do you think is an absolute necessity for every home?

A necessity for every home is a rug. A rug can bring a certain character to a home that nothing else can bring. It’s a type of artwork, and there is usually so much craftsmanship that has gone into making a piece.

What’s a rule of thumb you generally follow when you’re styling a home or room?

I think it is very important to really decide on a specific style for your home first; whether its bohemian, coastal, or modern, or any other style and stick with that. Certain styles look best with certain textiles and I think a room is built off of layers consisting of throws, pillows, rugs and curtains. After that, you can add in the fun little knickknacks.

What’s something you’ve learned through the progression of building your brand that you wish you knew when you first started?

A crucial lesson I learned through this process is to stop comparing myself to others and their designs. We are all given specific passions and ways to carry them out. It is so important to be true to yourself, and go after your dreams without competing with others. We are in an industry with so much talent. A friend told me once to ‘lift as you climb.” I have really embraced that in my life and it is so important to support those around you while building a business.

How did you get your interior styling name and brand out there in the beginning? How did you begin gaining your following and what was the most successful thing for you?

Instagram has been an integral tool for building my brand. I think what gained a lot of my following was creating a lux brand for less expensive pricing. Bohemian is very popular right now, but there is a way to make it look more lux instead of dorm room, and I think that was key in building my brand. I also respond to about everyone who comments on my posts. It’s important to stay relatable to a following and be who you would be if they were right in front of you.

What is one piece of advice you can offer an aspiring interior stylist looking to build their business online?

If I could give one bit of advise, it would be to stay true to what you love. Fads come and go, but there are parts of your aesthetic that should be timeless. Also, stay present online and keep posting your work. Create a vibe that is unlike any other, but at the same time, create magical spaces in which others can imagine themselves.

SWEET POTATO BURGER

Summer is here again and so is the barbecue season.

Many of us consider barbecue as something very fatty and unhealthy, which it to be honest usually is. But it can be also made healthy and figure-friendly with a couple of quick fixes. Here’s my number one tip when it comes to burgers: swap the white wheat bun to sweet potato and the beef to a veggie patty, and you got yourself a lighter and healthier burger option!

These veggie patties are made with a delicious combination of kidney beans, chickpeas, sweet potato and oats. Combining your legumes with a grain makes it a complete protein source. Adding sweet potato brings a burst of sweet flavor and a healthy dose of beta-carotene (vitamin A), which will make your skin glow, boost your immune system and can also help protecting your skin from the sun. Serve with lots of fresh veggies and your healthy dinner is complete!

Sweet Potato ‘Buns’

1-2 large sweet potatoes (the amount depends on the number of hungry eaters)

Start by preheating the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Wash the sweet potato(es) and cut into thick slices. Place the slices onto baking tray and bake in the oven for about 25-30 minutes.

Or you can also cook them in grill along with the patties.

Kidney Bean and Sweet Potato Patties
(makes approx. 8-10 patties)

200g canned kidney beans
200g canned chickpeas
1 cup grated sweet potato
½ cup rolled oats
1 yellow onion, diced
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp paprika spice
¼ tsp chili flakes
salt and pepper

Preheat a frying pan to medium heat. Add the olive oil, diced onion and minced garlic cloves, sauté until golden. Add the grated sweet potato and spices, sauté for another five minutes. Remove from the heat.

In a food processor/blender or using a fork, mash the kidney beans and chickpeas. In a large bowl combine the beans, sweet potato, onion mixture and rolled oats. Stir well and form into 8-10 even-sized balls. Press flat and bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes.

In case you are using a barbecue, freeze the patties first for about half an hour to set (and not crumble) and then grill as usual.

Serve with sweet potatoes, lots of fresh veggies and mashed avocado. ENJOY!

We Are All Healers {Remove Life's Programming}

WE ARE ALL HEALERS
{REMOVE LIFE'S PROGRAMMING}

We Are All Healers

We Are All Healers

Article by John Scardina

Magazine: Issue #37

As most people go through life living a programmed life, I sit back and wonder how many years in my lifetime have I wasted living in this manner. We all know the routine, it does start early in our lives as we have little choice in our early years, we know no better and are dependent on a society that molds us. We are taught to fit into society at so many levels that restricts us to think and do only as others do. Society has created these events making it difficult to think for ourselves and become who we were meant to be or better yet, who we manifest to be.

This also hinders our beliefs that we can openly be allowed to think outside of the box and succeed by far surpassing those who never release a programmed life.

We do not succeed by being just like everyone else.

We have been raised by this society, but we have been lied to at the same time. It’s time that you hear the truth about breaking free from this programmed life.

I want to share a bit with all of you, as I’ve lived this structured and programed way for much longer that I should have. I’ve been educated throughout the years and excelled at many things just exactly like everyone else. This gave me an education (which is a great thing), but I never really thought for myself. I needed to figure out for myself what it took to be one or two steps ahead of the pack and succeed in business and life. Breaking free from these so called normal events was one of the most frightening moments ever. This was a time to look deep inside myself and determine what it was that I needed. This started with more education in the Holistic realm and finally stumbling into energy work. Something about this felt so right to me, the ability to manipulate energy for positive benefits. So many benefits that blew my mind.

If you had the opportunity to learn and master techniques that allow you to heal yourself, events and others, would you be able to handle this truth? Society has made us dependent of receiving healing from others exclusively. It’s time to break free from this dependency and freely explore the possibilities of what Energy Healing can do for you, your life, and your business. As a Reiki Master Teacher I teach the individual methods that allow this process to manifest in your life every day, placing you in control of your real truth. Can you handle the truth that you do possess this ability and just need to be attuned to this process and remove the programmed life concept forever? Deprogram yourself into a successful life and experience the real truth of who you are and what you can be! Learn to manipulate energy.

How to Make Your Brand Stand Out in a Crowded Market

HOW TO MAKE YOUR BRAND
STAND OUT IN A CROWDED MARKET

Be The #1 Brand In A Crowded Market

Be The #1 Brand In A Crowded Market

Article by Gail Shapiro
Magazine: Issue #37

It’s a very popular topic and for some of you a very big worry. You think you have a great idea for a business but then you look around to discover “so many others are selling or teaching the very same thing”. So how will you survive, let alone be the huge success you dream of becoming? If you look around carefully and closely at what you are perceiving to be your competition I promise:

“You will not find anyone doing exactly what you do – exactly how you do it!”

And that’s exactly how it should be.

Think about this: when you decide to buy a book on any given topic whether you are trotting off to the local book store or shopping online, as soon as you start searching you discover there are oodles of books to choose from.
:: Are they all written by the same author?
:: Do they all have the same title? Typeface? Pictures? # of pages?
:: Are they all written in the same style?
:: Are they all bound the same?
:: Do they all cover exactly the same details from the same perspective or
angle?
:: Out of the entire selection is there one book that stands out and appeals to you above all others?

Let’s say you need a new pair of black heels so you head out to the mall.
:: Do all the stores carry the same styles?
:: Are all the black pumps the same price point?
:: Does one store more have a more comfortable shopping vibe?
:: Is the customer service the same in all the stores?
:: Is one store more stylish than the others?
:: Is one store just calling your name?
:: Do you find that one special pair that you just can’t live without?

I could go on pointing out the ways all these businesses are different but I think you are starting to see that even though the fundamental topic of the competition may be the same, that the “packaging and presentation” of the message or product is different every time.

As a customer or client yourself, I’m certain you have shopped in stores you have loved and can’t wait to go back to and those you would never set foot in again. You have likely worked with coaches or mentors you could relate to and followed to the letter and at the same time you have refused to work with others because they just didn’t get you or you could relate on some level.

Well it’s the same for you. You are not meant to sell or work with everyone looking for help on your topic. You must create your own Brand Magic that will attract the followers you are looking to work with. (lets get real here – you can’t and don’t want to work with everyone – it’s your business and your rules – be selective!)

You get to choose:
WHAT you want to sell
WHO you want to sell it to
HOW you want to deliver it
YOUR PERSPECTIVE or angle on the topic
PRICING for your products or programs

That’s your Brand Magic! Your Brand Magic will make you the #1 Brand to the fans and stalkers you want as clients!

{GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE}

Getting To The Root Of The Issue

Getting To The Root Of The Issue

Article by Melva Williams
Featuring: Carley Page Interiors
Magazine: Issue #37

I have been a stylist for going on 25 years now and loved hair since I was 5 years old. I had an aunt who would braid my hair every week and I would watch the way her hands would move and it was like watching a masterpiece being created for me. I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. My grandfather told me as a young girl whatever you do be the best, stand out from the rest and help others while you’re doing it. About 14 years ago I noticed women coming into the salon losing their hair for various reasons, not only my clients, but other stylists clients as well. This was not just external hair loss because of over-processing due to chemicals, braids, weaves, etc. But there are internal reasons why we lose our hair also. I began to ask a series of questions, and from their answers I noticed they were on the same lines and all had to do with the blood stream. So my research began in diet, exercise, medications, stress, hormones, metabolism, hydration, and how they all affect our hair.

At some point in my life I have been affected by one, and now all, of these issues in which I have researched. I think it made me dig a little deeper in a sense to gain more understanding of how I was to connect the dots in order to help others to do the same thing.

A woman is only as beautiful as she feels. That beauty should come from the inside out, but in today’s society that we live in, that beauty is put on what we see in the media; TV and magazines. Then the outer beauty we put on clothes, jewelry, makeup and hair which are just extensions of one of our greatest attributes.

In today’s economy I also know that when money gets tight, for most women, your hair salon visit is the first thing to fall off the budget list.

Here are some things you can do to make sure that you ensure healthy hair practices at home:
1. If you are African American whose decided to go natural, make sure you are using non-sulfate shampoos and conditioners
2. Conditioners and Protein Treatments are not the same; treat your hair every 6 weeks
3. Trim your hair every 8-12 weeks; it’s a part of your healthy growth process
4. If going through hormonal issues, use non-sulfate because of parabens in regular shampoos
5. Stretch out chemical treatments as much as possible; it’s healthier
6. If you are on high blood pressure medication you should not get permanent color; the ammonia interacts with medication

In our society today, hair has been made to be a very important part of a woman’s beauty, but not in the proper content in which it was given to her. Like everything else, if the inside is not right, no matter you put on the outside, it’s not going to help. All the good products you put on the hair won’t penetrate the hair. If you put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig.

This journey is about connecting your dots and going back to the root of the problem and finding out what’s going on inside. Give an honest account of where you are. Are you eating properly on most days? How’s your workout routine: over working out, no workout? Are you taking your medications correctly, do they cause hair loss? Are you stressed? What can I do to lessen my stress? How much water should I drink daily? All these things play an important role hair loss and hair growth.

Whatever is going on the inside is going to show up on the outside sooner or later. These things will also begin to show up in your hair as well. If you are on medication or sick, it will show up in your hair, or even after surgery you will discover some hair loss because of anesthesia. Anything that affects your blood stream will affect your hair. When you go to give blood, what do they tell you? "Squeeze this ball," why? It gets the blood pumping in your arm. That’s what exercise does to your scalp; it increases blood flow and helps with hair growth. But then over-exercising builds up testosterone and can causes male pattern baldness. Your hair is connected to the capillaries the blood flow of your scalp and is needed to grow. The same way that you need that blood to flow in your heart, and if it’s not flowing there will be a blockage. Same thought process if the blood is not flowing in the scalp there will be blockage and the hair will break off.

If you're overeating, eventually it will show up on the outside. It’s the same aspect if you’re not drinking enough water, your body will show signs of dehydration. There won’t be enough water to flush your liver or kidneys; your vital organs. It will not be enough to make to your hair so it will become dry, brittle, and break off. Toxins stay in the body longer, that’s why they take a strand of hair during drug testing because of the toxins.

When it comes to obtaining and maintaining healthy hair, here are my thoughts:
From the inside approach; make sure when you are prescribed medications that you do your own research to find out the side effects. Drink 6–8 glasses of water daily to properly hydrate, eat fruits and vegetables at least 5 days a week, exercise at least 3 days a week, and if possible, adding some vitamins in your regimen couldn’t hurt either. When it comes to your hair itself, make sure you are using quality products that are made for your hair texture, treat and trim your hair regularly, use satin at night and cotton when you work out.

You are not only restoring your hair but you are being brought back to fullness by connecting your dots. With each approach of restoration you receive your crown in its rightful honor by caring for our bodies.

I have found joy sharing my gift and passion for hair and helping others by mending their tresses. I have enjoyed this journey with you.

For example, the other day I wanted to buy this really nice Juicer, but it was very expensive. I found it online refurbished for a lot less, but I really wanted a new one for that lower price. I gave in and bought the new one.

I was very happy as I was unpacking it and excited to start juicing my veggies. I could not believe it. It smelled like V-8 juice; it was used, very used! They tried to clean it but... oh my goodness this is crazy! So I stayed in my happy zone and called the store manager, she apologized profusely and offered me an incredible discount on the replaced brand new machine, plus many coupons for future visits that will save me a ton of money!

So without even trying I now ended up with my brand new juicer for the same price I was going to pay for a refurbished one and more coupons to boot! Now that is synchronicity at it’s finest! I did have to return it and go out of my way, but the coupons far surpassed my time and gas.

These kind of experiences are supposed to be a part of our life everyday. They can be yours too by following these steps:

1 :: Choose in every moment to do something that makes you HAPPY! If you can not do something that makes you happy in the moment do your very best to see the positive in what you are doing, choose to be in a happier frequency.

What you put out comes back, period.

It is that simple, so when you are emanating anger and frustration you will find that on your path with others. If you are happy and try to see the best out of every situation then you will encounter this back to you.

2 :: Meditate! Yes, it is that simple. Take a few minutes everyday to connect with your higher self, source, God or the Universe. The more you can connect the more your perspective will become larger, deepened and more compassionate. This allows you to stay in the HAPPY frequency more of the time!

3 :: Listen to your intuition! It always knows what is best for you. It always knows when you should go for a walk to meet that special person that may just say one sentence that changes your life. It also knows when not to do something. Practice on little things so you can learn the signs and can start making major decisions based on your intuition.

Follow these three steps and I promise synchronicity will find you! Oh, I almost forgot, as you can see, be careful what you put your emotional energy towards. Be sure that is what you want to find you in your life, because it will. So be sure to release your anger, fear, judgment and resentment before you try to enlist synchronicity into your life.
