How Plants Can Support Your Holistic Health at Home with Feng Shui

Feng Shui is a wonderful practice to create a home that supports your holistic health – mind, body and spirit. It is a practice with a large toolbox of remedies to encourage a healthy flow of energy in a home, office, car, building, property, etc. By shifting the vibration and energy flow in a space, a similar shift is expressed in life. These life shifts create healing ripples felt by the occupants, their community, clients, family, friends, and beyond. Feng Shui has been used throughout the past 4,000 years and has been a great source of empowerment for healers, visionaries, and lightworkers.

One remedy that I use repeatedly in Feng Shui consultations is plants. Plants represent yang energy (active + moving) and have the ability to increase the energy in a space. They also satisfy our intrinsic desire for a deep connection with nature when we are surrounded by plants or images of plant life. Think about all the times that plants are given as gifts. They are wonderful to gift to a friend who just moved to a new home or for a loved one who is looking for their spirits to be lifted.

Plants also represent the Wood Element in Traditional Chinese Medicine’s 5 Element Theory, which is used in Feng Shui. The Wood Element symbolizes growth and expansion. For just a moment, envision a healthy maple tree, growing and thriving upwards to the sky. Rain (the Water Element) fuels the maple tree as energy flows up the trunk, throughout the branches and leaves. As the maple tree soars to new heights, the roots dive deeper underground, creating a strong and sustainable growth. This is a powerful metaphor for our lives. By including the Wood Element in a home, it supports the occupant’s intentions and personal growth.

What happens when a plant is not thriving? A crossroad is met, and a clear and conscious decision is to be made to either discard or save the houseplant. This decision can be made on several factors; however, the intention behind the decision is the most important.

If choosing to discard the plant, there is an amazing opportunity to release negative energy. Plants can be placed to shield the home and its occupants from negativity (including electromagnetic frequencies). From this perspective, the plant’s purpose was fulfilled by protecting the occupants from a potential threat. This can be cause for celebration with a beautiful ceremony, thanking the plant for its assistance.

Alternatively, there may be a lesson in this, seemingly unfortunate, situation. A withering plant is a physical message, communicating that the homeowners may have been neglecting their own needs. Plants, just like us, have varying needs. Some require lots of natural sunlight, such as a jade succulent, while others require little, such as a prayer plant.

As quoted by Alexander Den Heijer, “When a flower doesn't bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.” It is possible that the environment is yearning for a change to support the plant and the homeowner’s vitality. Reviving a plant back to optimal health can be an incredibly cathartic and powerful experience.

Some plants naturally have leaves that wilt and drop as they grow. It is quite surprising how many times I have been contacted about a plant that appears to be lifeless and finished, when they are in a dormant phase. The symbology of this process is major and presents a wonderful metaphor for life. Showing us that:

1 :: it is not only natural but essential for our own growth, that the “wilting leaves” are removed to allow for a healthy flow of energy into our own life; and,

2 :: there is an ebb and flow to life, with some periods of outward growth and other times inner growth. The inner growth is not always seen, but something that is felt deeply with the opportunity to activate massive change.

Plants are amazing living décor and have this incredible opportunity to support homeowners with Feng Shui. They absorb negative energy, contributing to a home that feels safe, protected and nourishing. Plants are also wonderful to boost the energy in a space and can help fuel positive changes in your home and life. Life begins to flourish when your surroundings reflect that energy back.
