3 Keys To Taking The Weirdness Out Of Talking About Yourself

Imagine you are in a meeting. All of your colleagues or business friends are sitting around a large table politely chatting and maybe even laughing with each other. They all look so at ease, so comfortable don’t they?

But you don’t. You feel your body tensing up as you look around. That old familiar feeling of anxiety blooming across your chest and filling up with dread at the thought of having to talk about yourself.

Or perhaps the scenario is that you are on the phone with a prospective client and they want to hear more about what you do. Do you have your signature pitch ready? Do you feel at ease or do the words sort of tumble out of your mouth and onto the floor like a missed shot at the wastebasket?

Talking about yourself can be hard but it doesn’t have to be.

Here are 3 ways to help take some of the weirdness out of talking about yourself.

1 :: Intention

Set the intention that you will feel comfortable, no matter what. Plant your feet on the ground and take five deep breaths before the meeting. This will help ground you. Then imagine yourself speaking clearly and confidently.

2 :: Phrasing

Practice talking about what you are good at. This is not arrogance. People want to know that you are confident about what you do. Create a tag line that sums up what you do.

For example, I am an Intuitive Storyteller and Brand Strategist. I do more than just write stories.

I help business owners communicate their value by designing powerful narratives.

If you sell cars for a living you are more than just a “sales person”, you have a specialty, a unique quality that sets you apart.

You could say: “I take the headache out of the car buying process by finding the exact car you want at the best possible price. “

3 :: Showing Up

Consider it a privilege to have been invited to meeting or that a prospective client has chosen to speak with you. Honor the moment by being fully present and by giving your full attention. People respond positively to people who behave as if they truly care.

Prove them right by giving them your best.

As a professional makeup artist, I’ve worked with hundreds of women for the most important occasions and events in their lives. From weddings, to branding photoshoots, and speaking engagements, my job is to make women look amazing and feel confident. Every time I do a woman’s makeup, I hear the same thing: “I wish I could do my makeup like you do. I don’t know how to do my makeup. I’ve been wearing the same makeup since 8th grade. I don’t think I’m doing it right.” Does this sound like you?

Here are my top 3 tips to do your makeup like a pro!

1| A little goes a long way. Do you feel like your makeup looks caked on, or like you wearing a ton? You’re probably using too much. Or you’re wearing full coverage for everything. You don’t need to wear as much makeup as you think you do. It looks more modern and fresh and YOUNG to just wear enough to enhance your features without covering or changing them.

2| Your brushes are magic erasers. Do you ever get frustrated because you’ve put too much blush on, or your eye shadow looks messy? You can use brushes clean or with your leftover concealer to erase your mistakes and have your makeup looking clean and beautiful.

3| Flawless skin is everything. This is what sets apart a great makeup look from an ok one. If you skin looks good, then you don’t need to wear a lot of other makeup. And if you’re not blessed with naturally clear, glowing skin, you can fake it with good products and techniques.

Spend most of your getting ready time on perfecting your skin, rather than a complicated eye look. If your skin doesn’t look good, no one is going to care about your perfect liner.

Doing your makeup doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be easy and should be fun! I want you to feel confident in your own makeup skills, and know you look amazing every day.

2| Once you know all the moving parts of this business, separate yourself from it. Ask, “What does the business need? How can I feed it the highest quality nutrition?”

You do not have time to be an expert in all things.

3| Consider how far you can get without hiring someone. Go to the end of that rope, and really struggle. No one can get inside your head and organize the strategy. Only after you organize, you really see where you need to hire.

4| When you finally decide you need to hire someone, you will know your strategy, you will be able to explain your creative vision and best know how to hire the right person.

But first, lovelies, you must unlock your fashion business strategy for yourself, by yourself. It’s one of those steps you cannot skip over. If you skip any of these steps you will have to return to them. I promise you.

I was an anxious, scared of the world child. This negative, fear based mindset attracted everything I did not desire which included incurable diseases, a box full of medicine and a cane.

I was unaware of the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction states that like energy attracts like energy. Or as Buddha stated – “What you think, you become.”

For myself, I can clearly see that I was on Autopilot going through life, allowing the subconscious mind to take over 99% of my actions. The subconscious mind learns how to walk, feed ourselves, and even develops conditioned responses to the way we respond to daily challenges. Most of the time I was not making conscious choices. The mind had a huge too do list that kept me chasing happiness. Ultimately, the mind seeks constant gratification – it desires to always be happy. Expect the happiness that the mind chases is conditional. And those conditions are constantly changing, making a state of happiness for most people difficult. Being happy was nearly impossible for me – I had a lot of pain and suffering.

When my subconscious brain was in full control, life was miserable. It gave me everything that I didn’t really want and yet I had no idea that my energy was only returning that same energy. I would have made life easier for myself, if I would have slowed down and allowed the conscious mind to make the choices. The subconscious mind works incredible fast, the conscious mind is very slow.

Try this experiment. Go grab a glass of water. Now without thought, take a drink. Now with thought, take a drink. Make your arm grab the glass, lift it up to your mouth, then open your mouth, then tilt the glass so you can receive the water, close your mouth, and then swallow. Those are basic steps, you could easily add a few hundred steps to this process.

Without interrupting the subconscious mind you will be forced into autopilot. When we are in autopilot then we are not in this moment, we have allowed the subconscious mind to take control. By slowing down, and becoming aware of our choices we take back control from the mind

A person in this exact moment is abundant and prosperity comes easily. Being present is simple yet difficult. Taking back control of the mind becomes difficult when the loud mind is in your face with a huge to-do list. One has to be willing to spend time in meditation or performing tasks mindfully. These practices become your keys to abundance.

Many people struggle to “figure out” their niche. Some are starting out, and some have been in business for a while but feel that “something is missing” in their message, target market and offerings.

“Plugging along” doesn’t mean progress. We have to reignite our FIRE to get out of “clone drone” existence.

To escape limbo and lit the FIRE for impactful actions, we need to determine our big WHY, WHO, WHAT and HOW – which will also conveniently translate into your niche.

Unfortunately, many people took some “niche” trainings packaged in a canned, “digestible” manner, with a disproportionate emphasis on “formula” and “research”.

They got “pushed” into a niche before they are ready to “claim it”, picking something from the “viable niche” menu only to realize it doesn’t resonate after spending months down the rabbit hole of building everything around this “made-believe” niche.

The emphasis on research and data has distracted you from the most important thing – YOU, the secret sauce in your business!

Data cannot synthesize and innovate without your creativity and individuality.

We stuff ourselves with “other people’s view points” at the expense of living our own beliefs, passion and conviction. All those templates, checklists, blueprints and formula are weighing us down.

The first step to nailing your WHY, WHO, WHAT and HOW is to question if an idea, belief, or concept is coming from deep within YOU, or something you were told that is “supposed to be?”

With that mindset, ask –

Why the heck did you go into business in the first place? (Be selfish here.)
What do you want your business to do FOR you?
What is your passion and conviction? What riles you up?
What are your superpowers?
How are you going to blend you desires, conviction, superpowers and personality altogether and express fully in your business?
What kind of clients really lights you up?
How does your conviction apply to these people? How can your superpowers serve them in a unique way?
