5 Ways to Cope With the Holidays When You're Feeling Lonely

One of the misnomers about the holidays is that it’s all apple pies and smiling relatives, for a lot of people the holidays are some of the loneliest days of the years— myself included. 3 Ways to Fight For What You Love (And Get It!)

3 WAYS TO FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU LOVE
(AND GET IT!)

Article: Angel Quintana    Photo: Joicy Muniz   Issue: #44

fight-for-what-you-love.jpg

After a grueling move into the new Holistic Fashionista headquarters, one with a kitchen to support the growth of my new botanical collection, it got me thinking about just how far one must go to get what it is they desire.

I desired a new space that would make building this new area of Holistic Fashionista easier, but I also had to fight to make it come alive.

Sure, sometimes you don’t need to fight for what you want, because it’s handed on a silver platter, but if you’re anything like me, I value the end result a lot more if I had to give a piece of my soul in order to have it.

I’m pretty sure this is what are called growing pains. Whether you’re looking for a soulmate, discovering your life purpose, or finding that home that speaks to your heart, finding and getting what you love is a song and dance.

Sometimes the song is slow and sensual, and other times it shakes you to the core bleeding out the tears— but for those who are not willing to settle for anything less that pure love, you’re going to experience a few growing pains, which are usually just the Universe’s way of making sure you’re ready for that kind of joy.

So how do you know if you’re really ready to receive all that you desire and love? It’s a matter of degree of how bad you’d like to attain it. If you’re not willing to fight for that love, do you truly deserve it? That my friend, is the burning question.

Here are 3 ways to help you not only fight for what you love, but help you ease the growing pains to acquiring it:

1) FIND THE SILVER LINING
We’ve all been heartbroken in the past (or at least those of us who actually had the guts to put our heart on the line), which is to be expected when you’re looking to find what/who it is you love. Yes, there will most likely be tears and yes there could be a couple screams, but what happens after the storm has past is the ability to reflect and find the silver lining

If you can’t find the silver lining and you’ve managed to forget about it quickly, perhaps it wasn’t true love in the first place. Yet, just because you can’t find the silver lining immediately, doesn’t mean it’s not en route. The idea here is to make sure you’re open to it. Love can be a beast of a teacher, but it’s only because it wants to make sure you enjoy every second of it-- once it becomes yours.

2) SURRENDER
I definitely hit rock bottom during our big move (if I told you all the horrible things that went wrong during this transition, I swear you wouldn’t even believe me), yet the only thing I could do was throw my arms up in the air and surrender. This can be an incredibly difficult thing to do when your heart desire’s something so deeply.

Our desire to control the situation or hold on so tight that you literally can’t breathe is really just a defense mechanism and let’s be honest, you can’t control the magic workings of the Universe!

Surrendering means to put your love into the hands of energy and truly believe that the Universe will deliver to you a result even more victorious than you could ever image during your controlling tantrums. It doesn’t matter how much you try to control, the only way to truly acquire what it is you desire is to surrender.

However, that doesn’t mean you give up hope or stop fighting for what you love. It just means that the fight is now in the hands of surrender, where it can be nurtured properly. Surrendering means you let the Universe fight it out for you! And what a relief it is when you finally do.

3) TAKE THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED
You want something so badly, that it’s literally created butterflies in your stomach, despair in your heart, and over-analyzation in your brain, what do you do then? You take the road less traveled.

When we love, we love from a part of our soul that most often has been dormant for quite some time, so getting our emotions under control becomes the big battle, but I have discovered a new way to handle those worries, by doing something you’ve never done before.

Taking the road less traveled means you don’t keep beating down the same door. It will only make you feel more insane when you realize that same door won’t open no matter how many tugs and knocks you give it. You can try a new key or you can kick and scream, but the only thing that is going to do is continue to drive yourself nuts!

So instead of checking yourself into an insane asylum (just go re-watch season 2 of American Horror Story, and you’ll scare yourself out of banging down a door that won’t open ever again), why not try a new path all together.

This could be finding a different door, squeezing through a side window, or hell, it could even mean busting out a 28’ ladder and climbing 3 stories, hopping over the balcony, and opening the sliding glass door (I shit you not, this happened during my move). The goal is just to find a different path.

Fighting for what you love is worth it, even if i feels like you won’t survive the pain. I assure you the rewards far outweigh the burden.

It’s only a shame that the majority of humans don’t fight for what they love: they stay in loveless relationships or marriages, they settle for a career that is unsatisfying, or they fear change, which makes it impossible to acquire the love(s) they truly desire.

It really makes my heart break to see so many walking souls not fighting for what they love, but I must admit, if they are not willing to fight for it, then they shouldn’t be sad when it never shows up, or worse it leaves them. If you don’t fight for what you love, then you don’t deserve to have it. It’s plain and simple.

We were each given the gift of free will, it’s up to us to decide what we will decide to do with it.

What Van Morrison Taught Me About Giving Up

WHAT VAN MORRISON TAUGHT ME
ABOUT GIVING UP

What Van Morrison Taught Me About Giving Up

What Van Morrison Taught Me About Giving Up

With a new moon in Leo, we’re finally moving out of the sluggish, “I don’t want to do it” mentality and into a mindset of taking action towards finishing projects so we may relish in the fruits of our labor. However, sometimes getting your groove back is easier said than done.

During the hottest month of the year, most of us are vacationing by the beach and taking that much needed R&R with the hopes of recharging our batteries, but that doesn’t mean our projects need to take the back burner.

I’ll be the first to admit that I love starting new projects— I could literally launch a new idea everyday, but that doesn’t mean it will be well thought through or that I always finish what I start. You see, project starting and project finishing are two very different mindsets. One involves the creative, idea-generating process (which most of us ladies really love) and then there is the execution part of the project to see it through to it’s finale (a much more masculine part of the process).

And yes, you can guess that it is the latter where most of us women begin to fumble. Why is it that starting a new project is exciting and exhilarating, but seeing a project (or desire) to it’s completion trips us up and gets us to drop the ball?

I needed a sign to help me figure out this one.

Yesterday I asked my angels to give me a sign I would without a doubt understand that would assure me about project I was thinking about throwing the towel on and they did just that.

This morning while showering with my iPhone blazing Spotify, one of my all time favorite songs came on, Into the Mystic by Van Morrison. The last line in that song said, “it’s too late to stop now” was a huge wake up call.

If you’ve already spent hours, blood, sweat, and tears on a project, why on Earth would you stop now? The hardest part of materializing project is coming up with the idea in the first place!

When you’re struggling with stay focused or self-doubt is creeping in, here are a few tips to light a fire under your booty:

1) Talk to Your Angels
If you haven’t tried speaking with your angels yet, there truly is no better time to open up the communication lines than when you’re feeling like giving up. To reach your angels, you merely need to sit quietly and ask them for guidance, “Dear angel, I am struggling with knowing if I should complete this project, please show me a sign that I will understand that will help me know I am on the right path for the highest good of all.”

It’s really that simple. You will be shocked how incredibly eye-opening this can be!

2) Figure Out What’s Stopping You
Sometimes the problem behind completing a task or materializing our desires is understanding where the block is coming from. This is a huge puzzle piece! Many times we worry the next stage in the process will either take too much time, it sounds boring (or even treacherous), or we aren’t quite sure what the next steps should be.

To unlock what is preventing you from continuing, we need to ask different questions. You’ll be happy to know that the reason for your delaying a project is usually because you want to start another one! You have a lot of creative ideas and a ton of things you want to materialize in your life, so giving up on a current project seems like a reasonable solution, when in reality it’s actually the opposite.

When you choose to stop one project to open space for another one, you actually are creating clutter in your mind and a cluttered mind can’t finish any project! So the next time you come up with another awesome idea, be sure you complete your current project so you can move ahead with clarity on all future projects.

3) Ask for Help
I know this seems pretty obvious, but I can probably guess if you’re reading this you’re probably an over-achiever (and over-achievers seldom ask for help). Asking for help is equivalent to making your project more fun! Finding the right kind of people or tools to help you complete your project is not only educational, but it's actually the part of your creative process that you love: problem-solving!

I usually resort to watching tutorials on Youtube when I want to try a new technique or learn a new skill, but you could also post in Facebook groups to see if someone with a particular skill might want to get involved. This is such a fun part of completing a project because you get smarter and you make new friends!

In closing, starting new projects without completing half-baked ones will only lead to more mental chaos, which will not help you materialize your dreams. Van Morrison said it frankly, “it’s too late to stop now.” My angels brought me that sign and now not only am about to materialize a project I have been working on for years, I get to share my newfound wisdom with my favorite holistic leader: you!

From one Holistic Fashionista to another, you got this! Now go follow those dreams to their completion.

The Hard Truth About Being a Hardened Woman

THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT BEING A
HARDENED WOMAN

Written by Angel Quintana  Photo: Paolo Prisco

hardened-woman.jpg

I’m not going to sit here and write this article and pretend that I haven’t been a jaded, hardened woman in the past — or that it doesn’t show up from time to time in my present because I’d be lying!

Over the many years of observing my behaviors inside and outside of the workroom, I’ve come to see the light and that light is actually darkness.

Firstly, I want any man (or worse, another woman) who is reading this to understand that a hardened woman isn’t a bitch.

You can put labels on her all you want or try to fit her into a tiny uncomfortable box with the hopes of understanding who she really is, but you'd be wrong.

THE HARD TRUTH:

A hardened woman is a product of her environment.

She’s a survivor and no matter what circumstances she’s handed, she’ll keep going no matter what. However, this resilience and strength doesn’t come without a hefty price.

While all the war wounds and battlefields have been endured, and the years of being let down, heart break for which she still is trying to recover, and hard work that may or may have not paid off in her work life, she has created an unduly invisible shield to protect her soul.

Like a faux fur jacket worn during those stormy winter days in New York City, this protective shield is a wall, a wall so high not even she could climb it. This will soon become problematic, for when she decides to access her intuition, give her heart to her beloved, or calm her mind, she simply cannot. She's blocked and it sucks!

With her inherent and increasing loneliness and sadness, there is no other option than to overthrow her invisible shield.

DAY ONE

On the first day of this life changing task, she buys a pair of stylish sneakers. She figures, the only way to find out just how tall this barrier is so she could derive a master plan to get to the other side.

And so that is exactly what she does. Her first inclination is to jump over the wall like a hurdle on a racetrack. She backs up several yards and begins to run, catching momentum and speed with each step and then in an instant she jumps. She attempts the sprint two more times, but each time she was unable to reach the top of the wall to see what was on the other side.

DAY TWO

One thing you must realize about a hardened woman is she doesn’t give up easily. The next day she goes to the market to purchase a trampoline to see if she can bounce her way over the top of the wall. She buys the bounciest and most expensive trampoline on the market. She practices for days bouncing up and down, but alas she is not able to reach the top of the wall.

DAY THREE

On the third day, she is convinced the only logical next attempt would to be to find the tallest ladder, lean it against the wall and climb over it. Surely there must a ladder that would help her reach her goal. As she climbs with each step, the ladder was still not tall enough. And with a few shed tears, the wall remains and she feels defeated.

What happens next to the hardened woman is not only incredibly sad, but also a terrible shame.

You see, the hardened woman has the ability to move mountains, but it is her own protective shield that prevents her from obtaining what it is she truly desires.

What is the hardened woman to do?

If you feel you are becoming (or are) a hardened woman, here are 3 basic steps you can take to break down your walls and achieve your greatest desires:

1) Show Vulnerability
Whether you are a single woman trying to find love in the dating space (even if it feels S-C-A-R-Y) or a woman in business looking to build her tribe, you must share what’s in your heart. This means, the next time a guy (or gal) let’s you down, you tell that person they hurt your feelings or you share a personal anecdote with the people you want to know you.

While most hardened women feel detered from showing raw emotion, fearing it will sound like weakness, in reality this action will actually soften her. Once you feel soft, your walls begin to come down like magick.

2) Dress Like a Woman
This is where you can really start to have some fun. Forget climbing a ladder to get over the wall, instead try dressing like a woman. It doesn’t need to be ruffles and monochromatic pastel pink, your ensemble must simply make you FEEL like a woman.

This could include:

  • Wearing a feminine scent
  • Choosing to show legs (or your curves)
  • Wearing a dress
  • Sporting a pair of high heels
  • Curling your hair

Whatever makes you feel more feminine, by all means do it! You’ll start to notice how you hold your body and how people respond to you differently. This kind of attention reminds you that you are indeed a woman or in this case a hardened woman who is beginning to soften.

3) Trust The Universe
One of the fastest ways to soften a hardened outer shell is trust that The Universe has your back. This means you literally need to kick back and “believe”. This can be intimidating at first for the hardened woman because she is so used to doing everything herself and pounding the pavement until she sees a result.

However, The Universe works a little differently. It’s not necessarily about “making things happen”, it’s about “trusting” that they will. When you feel the need to control a given situation, that is the opposite of trusting The Universe.

The next time you feel the need to control a situation, remember that this will only hardened and strengthen the protective shield you so desperately want to break down!

If you’re a hardened woman or you feel your protective shield growing stronger, I want to encourage you to use these three tips to reverse the effects. A protective coat maybe have protected and served you for many years (and assisted in winning a few battlefields), but if your luck is running out, romance is at an all time low, or customers are not gravitating to you, it could very well be that the hardened woman inside of you is leading the way and it’s time to show her the door.

The hardened woman has served her purpose for long enough, let’s give her some breathing room to let go, achieve, and believe. And before you know it, the soft side will take over and the beauty of being a woman will walk in the path that is light, free from the darkness of the past and where abundance lives at her finger tips.
