Why Being an Old Soul Isn't Really That Cool

The term old soul has been thrown around the metaphysical and spiritual communities for decades, but what does it really mean? Is the phrase a way to serve our ego, separate ourselves from those who seem less evolved or to make it known that we are in some way special?

When you think about what the fundamentals of the term old soul really means, I think you'll discover that identifying yourself as one is really doing your spiritual growth a major disservice.

What is an old soul?

Commonly, an old soul is generally thought to be someone who has been around this Earthly block a few times -- even thousands upon thousands of incarnations.

It's also used to refer to a person who is "wise behind their years" or has distinct intuitive gifts that perhaps, the majority of “new souls” don't possess.

However, if you really get into the nuts and bolts of labeling yourself an old soul, what you're actually doing is putting casting spell on yourself, and that spell is to keep you Earthbound.

Let me explain…

If you've incarnated thousands of times, and have learned loads of lessons -- far surpassing the average "new soul" folks, then why haven't you graduated from Earth School?

When you label yourself an old soul or some other “egoic label”, you should remind yourself why you’re here — to get off the wheel of karma.

Earth is a school for the soul; therefore when you refer to yourself as an old soul, what perhaps are doing is feeding your ego. And if you’re not feeding your ego, then are you gushing about the fact you that you have yet to graduate from Earth after thousands of incarnations?

Do either of these options make any good sense?

Whenever I hear someone refer to themselves as an old soul, I often wonder if they understand what they’re really saying.

The way I see it, is I'd like to graduate from Earth school and eventually make it to the New Earth where the vibration is higher and the lessons are different. If I label myself an old soul, that’s like telling the Universe I want to continue to be an Old Soul and keep learning lessons, hence never getting off the wheel of karma.

It appears there is some kind of pleasure or badge of honor in labeling oneself an old soul, which in many ways contradicts the purpose of the spiritual path.

  1. Labels fuel the ego

  2. Words are spells

I suppose the logic behind this term is that the older the soul, the more wise or experienced you are, but compared to what? You still incarnated here like the rest of us. You're still learning lessons, and you still, in fact, have not graduated.

There are many misnomers in the spiritual and metaphysical communities that simply need to be laid to rest. It's not necessary to feed our egos to help us feel special or exceptional in some way because that creates division between those who have evolved and those who have yet to.

Spirituality is the journey from self to soul.

The soul needs no labels, the self does. Once we truly go inward, we realize that Earth school is for expanding the soul and becoming an old soul is not the destination.

Earth is one of the hardest schools in the cosmos. There are more life forms and lessons to learn here than likely any planet or star system out there and we should remain compassionate towards our fellow human being and to ourselves.

Let’s put the right spells on ourselves — the kind that help us to ascend rather than keeping us Earthbound.

Even if some cannot comprehend our ways of life, doesn't mean they are a new soul. It means, their soul came to Earth to work on different things than you.

If you consider yourself an old soul, I hope you will ask yourself: do you believe that to be true because your ego wants to feel special or do you simply want a pat on the back for being on Earth for so long?

Either way, the answer isn’t really all that cool.

Let’s put our focus on expanding our consciousness with awareness so we can complete this karmic wheel and move on to the next level in our ascension.
