What first got you interested in fashion?
My grandmother worked at Saks Fifth Avenue in NY when I was a little girl. She'd always come home with something crazy, colorful, and bold. She was the type of woman that would wear head to toe leopard for a walk in the country. I'd spend hours peeling through her closets and trying things on. She taught me to have no fear and that it was ok to stand out and be different.

How did you come up with the concept of these suits? What inspired you?
I started surfing a couple of years ago and realized that none of my bikinis would stay on when I was trying to catch a wave. They would literally fly right off! I wanted silhouettes that were not only functional but also cute and fashion forward. I'd been designing prints and  consulting as an illustrator with swim and lingerie brands for years, so I was ready to step out and create my own line. My first print--our Piña Crown design--is a play on a traditional pineapple print with a Novel twist. It's also a nod to a pineapple painting my grandmother painted when she was my age.

How important is finding the right fit? Any tips?
Finding the right fit is everything! I like to follow the CCC's: Comfort, Confidence, and Coverage. When you're down to your skivvies on the beach, you want to feel comfortable with your outfit. You don't want to feel like your constantly adjusting. You also want to feel confident, look amazing, and make heads turn. I wanted our prints to be showstoppers, so I designed really bold, fun patterns. Finally, you want to have the level of coverage that works for you that will allow you to enjoy yourself in the water without being scared that your suit is going to peel off after one wave. We really focused our first line to meet that criteria.

What made you decide to start your own company?
For years, I worked as the Marketing Manager at a prestigious design company in Manhattan. We worked with incredible CFDA fashion designers--Rodarte, SUNO, Proenza Schouler, and Maria Cornejo--and an immensely talented female Creative Director, Dorothy Cosonas. Our marketing team was really small, so it often felt like we were running our own boat. I was literally doing a thousand different things every week, which was exciting and challenging. I knew that if I could apply all the same hard work and drive into my own business, I could make something happen. So I planned for two years, created a solid plan, saved money, found investors, and made the plunge.

Do you have any advice for other women with aspirations to start their own business?
Yes! Our motto from the beginning has been "Get it, Girl." We really believe in going after it--whatever "it" may be. Never be afraid to ask for what you want. I always have to remind myself that asking for what you need isn't annoying. It's business! Don't apologize for needing answers immediately. Don't hesitate. Ask questions until you find an answer. Meet people. Hire an accountant! And most importantly, be kind.

What’s next for Novel Swim?
We are thrilled to say that we just launched our online shop, and we are working on making our ecommerce platform more robust. We also just finished a tour along the south west coast of California where we met some amazing boutique and shop owners. Now, we are continuing our tour on the east coast. We're also planning out our next collection and working on concepts for our next print. There are a lot of great micro projects in the works that we can't wait to share with everyone.

Photography by: Hailley Howard

In this month’s issue of Holistic Fashionista Magazine, we’ve featured beautiful photography from Hailley Howard. Hailley is a California-born fashion and commercial photographer now splitting her time between both coasts. Hailley's clean and stoic eye is experimental and not afraid to push the boundaries. Self-taught, she doesn't adhere to the confines of rules and she lets her environment envelop her imagery; unique, free and feminine. Raw yet structured, her images evoke emotions of voyeuristic moments; caught and captured, intimate and still. When not shooting for work Hailley fills her Instagram feed with images of beaches, architecture, palm trees and stolen moments - camera always in hand, Hailley is ever defining her voice behind and through the camera lens. You can see more of Hailley’s work at www.Hailley.com

Who or what influenced you to become a photographer?

I was a kooky child. A mismatched ragamuffin running ragged with un-brushed hair, bouncing off the walls and always stopping visitors and friends for an impromptu dance performance. I guess you could say that I had an "artistic temperament". But I couldn't find my outlet. I would draw, I would paint, I would wake up early and write stories on a baby blue typewriter - but I never felt that I was "good-enough". Looking back I can see how drawn to images I was. I would pull magazine clippings and take selfies, before the word was coined, already creating stories with images before I realized what I was doing. I suppose it was so seamless and natural that it took nearly 23 years for me to hear that calling, that whisper - the pull into the abyss that is diving headfirst into a creative career, naked and vulnerable.

I had become the one that always had her camera out, taking photos, editing them {badly} and sharing them with strangers and random party-goers. I wasn't trying to be a photographer, I was just being. In saying this I am realizing that in this love affair, we found each other. I decided to move forward full-force after a soul-searching road trip across the country. When I got home, that is what I did and it's all I have been doing ever since. The movement was slow at first but it has truly become what I live, eat and breathe.

It's hard for me to tell you exact influences. I can tell you photographers that I love for various reasons. But I think what is more interesting is that I look back at things that I liked, people I looked up to, images I marked or pulled and I see how they seeped into my consciousness and somehow became a part of me and my style. It's an amazing thing what happens when you love and appreciate something. It becomes a part of you.

How would you describe your photography style?

Sometimes I will ask my subject to look at me as if they are putting a spell on me. I suppose I am asking this because I want them to go into themselves and find their power and share it with me through their eyes. I think my images have a sense of magic to them. There is a level of intensity but also a feminine whim. That juxtaposition plays into my sense for a clean image, nearly stark at times but never cold.

What is your favorite part of having your own creative business?

I love {and hate} that is all lies on me. I grew this with my work ethic. My honor to my word. My flexibility. My will and my perseverance. It is a deeply moving thing to step back and realize that regardless to what I am shooting, someone liked what I do and wanted to hire me. Someone appreciates the way I see the world. It's my gift to share a perception of reality. THIS is what I see, and you can see it too... it's sharing with others in a really beautiful way and it's an honor. Isn't that amazing that I get to do that and get paid for it?!

Photography by: Hailley Howard

Photography by: Hailley Howard

What projects motivated you the most?

I find happiness in everything I shoot. But if I were to plan a "perfect" career, it would be filled with beautiful locations, beautiful light, beautiful people and beautiful clothing. I am motivated to create beauty, to capture the beauty in front of me and to share these beautiful things.

If you could give our readers one piece of advice about owning your own business, what would it be?

It isn't easy to find the thing that makes you tick, that feeds you and that keeps you going. If you find that, whatever it is, do not give up. Make. It. Happen.

What’s on the horizon for you? Any projects we need to know about?

I have a cover coming out this fall with Palm Springs Style - we shot at a super special top secret location - keep your eyes peeled... might be my favorite shoot to date!

Featured Interview: Brie Leach Crouse

FEATURED INTERVIEW: BRIE LEACH CROUSE

Interview by Angel Quintana
Magazine: Issue #29

Photography by: Hailley Howard

Photography by: Hailley Howard

In this month’s issue of Holistic Fashionista Magazine, we feature our editorial makeup artist Brie Leach Crouse. A Laguna Beach bridal makeup artist and hairstylist with a background in fine art, Brie, is a promoter of confidence, fun and zero stress on your wedding day. You can learn more about Brie and her services at www.BeachFox.com.

Why were you drawn to all-natural & organic makeup?

I never considered that makeup could be potentially harmful until I started to educate myself on how to improve my diet. I wasn’t sick or anything, but at the time I was renting a cute little place with a garden plot and I began growing vegetables, cooking more often and learning about nutrition. It took a couple years of casual research before I had the revelation-- our skin absorbs the ingredients we apply to it, so shouldn’t we as careful about what goes on our skin as we are about the food we eat? Then I went down the rabbit hole and I’ve been finding my way back to the surface, unlearning every clever marketing scam I had been taught along the way.

How did you get started in the industry?

I was living with a girlfriend who was a professional model. She would give me first-hand details from behind the scenes and I always wanted the scoop on the makeup and hairstyling products the pros used. Because I was so interested and since I already had a fine art background, eventually she began asking me to do her makeup. It quickly became obvious that I was hooked, so she encouraged me to enroll at a prestigious makeup school that happened to be down the street, right under my nose. Thanks Jenny Lynne!

Can you tell us about your business, Beach Fox?

Beach Fox is the name of my freelancing business where I perform makeup applications and hairstyles that are non-toxic and safe for both me and my clients. I’m not selling products, I’m simply supporting all the great brands out there who are on the forefront of a cleaner beauty industry, by buying their existing products and using them on my clients. I’m basically doing what I love, which is creating beautiful makeup and hair looks, while showing my clients the possibilities of what they can create with the healthy products that are currently on the market, should they choose to go out on their own and buy them. I also like using my all-natural and organic kit for my print work, since models don’t have a choice of what artists put on them-- they all appreciate knowing that I’m using safe products on them and that I care.

What piece of advice would you give an entrepreneur who is looking to start in the beauty industry?

Stay humble. You can always be better; focus on yourself and how you can improve while trying not to compare yourself to others. Just because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean you have to. I’ve made a career out of not subscribing to trends and looking within to find the style that speaks from my heart.

What is the most important thing to you about all-natural & organic products?

My clients’ satisfaction. I’m on a mission to provide the cleanest, most beautiful makeup applications and hairstyles and I rely on the industry to provide me with products I use to make that happen. If something new comes out that is healthier and better than the one I have, you bet I’ll swap it out. If any of my clients have an issue with something I’ve used, I want to know about it. Their happiness is the most important thing to me.

What are your go-to makeup or beauty products?

Organic witch hazel to prep and tone the skin, 100% Pure fruit pigmented concealer, Mama Going Natural liquid foundation (etsy), Alima Pure satin matte blush, and Juice Beauty refining finishing powder.

Photography by: Hailley Howard

Photography by: Hailley Howard

What is your #1 beauty tip?

Always set creams with loose powders. All-natural products have many plant-based ingredients that might not stay where you put them the way their chemical counterparts do. Before writing off a product, try setting it. I find that makeup looks more natural when it’s underneath a sheer veil of powder anyways.

What’s next for Beauty Fox?

Any upcoming events/ventures we need to know about? Beach Fox the app! Hopefully in the near future I’ll have the Beach Fox app ready to download for free-- book makeup and hair appointments and beauty consultations, see what’s new in clean beauty and more.

Featured Interview: Dianna Esteves Vieira

FEATURED INTERVIEW: DIANNA ESTEVES VIEIRA
Eco Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist

Photography by: Nancy Schoenmakers

Photography by: Nancy Schoenmakers

Why were you drawn to eco-friendly makeup?

Several years ago, I was battling some heath issues, and decided to completely change my lifestyle. I switched to a Macrobiotic diet and upon my research, I stumbled across many articles stating disturbing claims regarding toxic chemicals used in various personal items and cosmetics as well. I immediately tossed out my various high end makeup products in my kit, and never looked back :)

How did you get started in the industry?

I actually started out as an Esthetician, trained in Toronto at the prestigious Edith Serei School of Advanced Esthetics. I had a passion for skin care, however with the minimal makeup training received in the course, I realized I had a bigger passion for everything pertaining to makeup application. . I honed my skills over the years, becoming virtually self taught.

Can you tell us about your business? Are you freelance or how does it work?

Yes I do freelance. Everything from working at several events, shoots with different photographers, fashion films, indie film projects etc. and I have an awesome relationship with Photogenics Media, I mainly work with their models. Along with freelancing I am the resident makeup artist at Nitespa. My business is comprised of using non-toxic and cruelty free products. I educate women and pre-teens on the utter importance of using clean ingredients on the skin. I m a huge advocate for animal and human justice and welfare. I volunteer for a couple of different organizations, and began my own mission called Project SoulFarm. I teamed up with celebrity photographer Dan Santoni to educate many on the ills of factory farming. We choose celebrities who refrain from eating meat and who have a big heart for the plight of these amazing creatures without a voice.

Photography by: Nancy Schoenmakers

What piece of advice would you give an entrepreneur who is looking to start in the beauty industry?

I'm still figuring it all out myself! Be informed, be genuine and kind! Much needed when dealing with others in the fashion and entertainment industries :)

What is the most important thing to you about green products?

That they are ethical. Nothing matters more to me. My company motto is "If we could choose non-toxic & cruelty free beauty without hurting others...why wouldn't we"? There is no other option, nothing else makes sense to me.

What are your go-to makeup or beauty products?

Vapor Organics Stratus Soft Focus Instant Skin Perfector, Satin Matte Foundation by Alima Pure, Realist Invisible Setting Powder by W3ll People, , A Fine Romance Multi-use Stick by Ilia Beauty, Purely Simple Face Cream by Osmia Organics, coconut oil, Clairisonic Mia Cleansing Tool..

What is your #1 beauty tip?

Just one? Lots of alkaline water!

Photography by: Mariana Garcia

How did the brand start?

I just wanted a fresh start! I just wanted to have new light and colors. I've been doing jewelry all my life but never done big and bold designs. So I started with a couple of pieces for myself and loved the way it started to look and I Just took it from there.

What is your current role at Cocoon?

I am the owner and designer. I lead our small team, we are 7 people in total, everyone has a special role. We all help each other out to and bring our best to the table, I would never do it alone, it takes a great team as the one we are so Cocoon can be what it is.

What is the inspiration for this season's collection?

It's all about Art Deco and mixing it with a lot of geometric shapes.

I love the boldness of your designs. What pieces would you suggest for an entrepreneur looking to have new head shots done?

You don't want to overdo it, so I would suggest a thin choker. Keep it simple!

We are obsessed with the equestrian headpieces. Do you ride horses?

I'm so glad you like them!   I've ridden horses since I was a child, I still do. It calms my soul.
Being in touch with these creatures is very special. The pieces are my tribute to them

I have been interested in photography since I was a kid, I used to take portraits of my pets, and later in high school I took professional courses.

The most important thing to me is to achieve an aesthetic mood and always taking care of the model’s integrity.

The Gorgeous Gamin: Nicole Zaagman Exclusive Interview

THE GORGEOUS GAMIN

Exclusive Interview with Nicole Zaagman
Interview by Angel Quintana
Photography by Rush Varela

nicole-zaagman

What ignited the spark in you to start your business and what do you
consider to be your greatest business achievement since?

I’ve often spoke about the desire I had at an early age, to do something great with my life. I became frustrated as a young adult finishing college, because I couldn’t figure out WHAT this thing was. It seemed so far off. I had to go through a health crisis in my early twenties, just after I started my professional career as a designer, before I started to receive answers. Over the course of the next few years, I was able to rebuild the confidence I had lost on a physical and psychological level. Throughout this journey and help from some significant mentors, I discovered ways and paths to not only heal myself but develop a lifestyle that fulfilled me. One day it just HIT me. Whamo! It was like the heavens opened. It became clear there were other women in the world that needed help rebuilding the confidence they’d lost so they could also follow their dreams. Out of this epiphany, this spark began to light a fire in me.

As I continued down this path of self-discovery, my business evolved as well. I made shifts in my life that made what I did for a living much more fulfilling. This included getting out of the professional photography industry, developing a luxury program and quitting my corporate job. I’d have to say, my greatest business achievement has been finding that fulfillment. If you’ve experienced it, you’ll know what I am talking about. It’s the warming sensation in your heart, feeling completely at ease and satisfied while performing in your gift. The greatest joy for me has been to witness my clients experience this as well. Some describe it as “their heart chakra opening” or them thanking me for giving permission to feel this good about their new found purpose in life. I always smile at that comment, they’ve had it all along, it just took a little look at their past to identify what makes their heart sing.

If you could give a budding entrepreneur any words of wisdom what would they be?

1. Let your frustration guide you, don’t get caught up in the negativity of not knowing. 2. Allow yourself to imagine. Cultivate those initial ideas. Write them down. If something comes to you out of nowhere that seems impossible, add it to your long term vision. 3. Start putting yourself in places to meet the right people. As you develop your mindset and intention, you’ll begin connecting with the right people. Focus on cultivating those intentional relationships with others who understand YOU. 4. Let others who don’t understand your purpose, fall to the wayside. If you’ve got a dream, chances are there are many others who share similar interests. 5. Let go of outcome. If things don’t go how you had hoped, it’s OK. There may be a very good reason or perhaps a better opportunity just around the corner.

You are so successful at such a young age. What's your
secret - To what do you most attribute your success?

Number one would be my spiritual practice as a Christian. There have been so many times I’ve wanted to give up, throw in the towel, but instead I ask God to provide a way, to give me the right words to say and to bring the right people into my life. There’s way too much to try and tackle on your own. When things get tough, what keeps me going is knowing He’s got much bigger plans for me than what I can see. Number two would be my husband, Ken. We met young, we married young. I think having the ability to grow up with such an optimistic and entrepreneurial individual really taught me a lot. I talk about the importance of a significant support partner with my clients. I’d have to say Ken’s definitely been that for me. Pushing me to go after my dreams and cheering me on, along the way. And lastly, being taught the necessity of hard work at a young age. My parents chose to home-school us, all the way through high school. We were raised to be responsible, self-starting and mature. I remember growing up carrying on more conversations with my parent’s friends than kids my own age. I’ve always jokingly said: “I feel like I have the thought process of someone twice my age,” and I am beginning to think there’s some truth to that.

We love tips + tricks - Tell us, what entrepreneurial hacks have you developed
to stay focused and productive in your day-to-day?

Good ole to-do lists. I love making lists. That’s honestly what keeps me on task. I love being able to check things off the list. Having accountability (especially as an entrepreneur) – Ken and I do a pretty good job of keeping each other in line. Setting deadlines and sticking to them as much as humanly possible. Allowing for regular breaks or short outings during throughout the day.

What’s your favorite metaphor for describing entrepreneurship?

Surfing! Although, I’ve never surfed :) Shhh, I have a fear of large bodies of water due to almost drowning and just about losing a toe once, one day I’ll conquer that fear. OK, back to surfing, I read an article on www.TheInertia.com that lists 8 reasons why surfing is a great metaphor for entrepreneurship. Those points include: 1. Every time you fall down, get back up, 2. Surfing, like entrepreneurship, is a spiritual journey, 3. Mind over matter, 4. Be present, 5. Ego is no amigo. 6. Persistence and perseverance pave the way, 7. Camaraderie and character are key and 8. Patience pays.

In my program, Discovering Your Brand Story®, we cover many of the topics listed above. Most importantly the NEED to incorporate spiritual practice in business, using your past experiences to impact your present and future success – without letting your past define your present, incorporating gratitude and how to LOVERAGE™ these things SO that you can follow your dreams. A dream is just a dream unless there is action put behind it. Allow your inner entrepreneur to surf every once in a while.
